They "Run out of steam at higher volumes" because they need more current. If you adapted them into a stock amplifier set up for 6L6's and hit the play button, they are being starved. Don't waste your time with 7027, lots of money for a scarce industrial grade powerhouse. It is the same tube as what is in this video with no top anode connection. At next to free on EvilBay, these rock. I just picked up 20 there for a dollar apiece. Stay with these, or go KT66 is my 2 cents.
Yes man, a real amp and speakers. None of this modern skinny crap sounding towers driven by all in one chip amps. I can hear the full tube sound even through the camera mic. My personal no:1 choice of tube for HIFI is 6V6. 6L6 comes 2th. Similar sound, more power but not as soft. Worst for HIFI in my book is the EL84 but again it is one of the best sounding for a guitar amp.

I listen to tube amplifiers almost exclusively in my Ampex 620's. Even want to put a pair with an inverter in my car.
