The reason that many people insist that Yog-sothoth is stronger is because Wikipedia says that he is mightier than the all powerful Azathoth and wiser than the all knowing Yibb-istll. The mention of Yibb-istll most certainly means that this tidbit came from post-lovecraft additions to the Cthulhu mythos, most likely by August Derleth and beyond. Make of it what you will.

However, the thing about the Mythos is that you are free to disregard any author or story you don't like as the canon policy is effectively nonexistent. All knowing and All Powerful rather than Azathoth's infinite might combined with a mind that may or may not actually exist. It's something of a simplification of the Cthulhu mythos but I can see where it comes from. But still, if you don't like the post-lovecraft Cthulhu mythos authors, you are free to ignore them.

Satan was originally an angel who executed God's orders to create challenges for humanity (like temptations and natural disasters, but all done with the purpose of good, of helping humanity grow). Initially, God was the source of both good and evil and there was no Devil until Christianity.

The idea that most of the eldritch beasts of Lovecraft = Satan is crap. Satan is an advesary something deeply and intimately tied to humanity, the cosmic horrors on the other hand are alien and act not out of malice, but what is almost ignorance. If anything the beasts of lovecraft are more an expression of the man's bigotry, representing his fear of change as well as the bestial, alien and barbaric foreigner and what results from mixing that with 'white' civilization. In the lovecraftian mythos humanity is the side effects of a scientific mistake by the elder things a race that now reside in the nothern and southern poles of the earth they created the shoggoths and many other creatures in prehistoric times.
I know how Lovecraft was racist as one can be, and how those ideas would manifest through his stories. But I don't think the entire mythos he created is about that. Pretty sure it was mostly just about man's insignificance and what not.

It's not a matter of comparison for me, it's just that numerous avatars of Nyarlathothep are based off of or are the basis for Satan. Azathoth has no relation to Satan, much in the same way that he very possibly has no relation to anything. But the fact remains that Nyarl. is connected to the concept of the devil. It's hard to deny when you look at his avatars; the Black Man, Asmodeus, Set, and numerous others. Nyarl. quite possibly is Satan by being the inventor of the very concept himself.

The reason that many people insist that Yog-sothoth is stronger is because Wikipedia says that he is mightier than the all powerful Azathoth and wiser than the all knowing Yibb-istll. The mention of Yibb-istll most certainly means that this tidbit came from post-lovecraft additions to the Cthulhu mythos, most likely by August Derleth and beyond. Make of it what you will.

@hiimquinn Well, the later authors of the Cthulhu mythos say he is stronger, so I guess if you count their works he would indeed be more powerful. However, the thing about the Mythos is that you are free to disregard any author or story you don't like as the canon policy is effectively nonexistent. So if you are one of those who vehemethly refuse to accept the works of anyone but Lovecraft as canon in the Cthulhu mythos; then the whole question of Yog-sothoth vs Azathoth becomes up for debate.

@hiimquinn In my opinion, the later authors made Yog-sothoth definitively more powerful than Azathoth to get something closer to a Monotheistic god. All knowing and All Powerful rather than Azathoth's infinite might combined with a mind that may or may not actually exist. It's something of a simplification of the Cthulhu mythos but I can see where it comes from. But still, if you don't like the post-lovecraft Cthulhu mythos authors, you are free to ignore them.

So Azathoth is gibbering madness, incapable of higher level thinking. Why Azathoth is often called "The Idiot God". Yog-Sothoth, on the other hand, is nearly as powerful - and unlike Azathoth - Yog-Sothoth is more than capable of thinking/reasoning. Cthulu, while powerful, isn't nearly as strong as Yog.

@void735 the point is, while Cthulhu may be a God to mortals and an unstoppable force will inevitably spell the end for humanity, Azathoth is a God to GODS who in his blind throws of madness could, and most likely will eventually, destroy all the Outer Gods, Great Old Ones and everything else without even noticing.
There is no competition here.
The point of Lovecraft's writings is that eventually humanity and the rest of the universe will be wiped out by forces incomprehensible able to us.

The original "enemies" of God and Man were the Leviathan, the Behemoth, and the Serpent (don't really know who these are, they remain very mysterious figures with scarcely any explanation). Satan was originally an angel who executed God's orders to create challenges for humanity (like temptations and natural disasters, but all done with the purpose of good, of helping humanity grow). Initially, God was the source of both good and evil and there was no Devil until Christianity.

If God in the old testament could be said to have an enemy it would be Baal, the god worshiped by the enemies of the Israelites. (who as a note is not the devil either, the word Baal simply means lord).
as for Leviathan and Behemoth, they are two of the three monsters made by God, the other is the Ziz. in the Jewish apocalypse its said these three monsters will be eaten by the faithful in a great feast in heaven.

I think all other gods were technically "enemies" of God in the Old Testament. The Egyptian gods were God's enemies before Baal, but this is only if these other gods mess with the Hebrews. Depending on the interpretation, it is probable that the ancient Hebrews acknowledged other gods' existence (unlike modern Judaism), it's just that only God the Creator is worthy of worship (He was either the chief of all other gods-think Zeus/Odin-or that He created even the other gods).

A lion doesn't go kill a gazelle because it hates the look of it or wants it dead because it made a rude gesture its killing it for survival to eat. War is apart of nature and im sure it evolved along with humans. But nature is all about balance and survival. Humans don't need to make war for resources or religion. violence for the sake of it or because it enjoys it. What im getting at was not war. Im simply stating that animals don't need to commit acts of violence for the sake of it or because they enjoy it as would a human.

The idea that most of the eldritch beasts of Lovecraft = Satan is crap. Satan is an advesary something deeply and intimately tied to humanity, the cosmic horrors on the other hand are alien and act not out of malice, but what is almost ignorance. If anything the beasts of lovecraft are more an expression of the man's bigotry, representing his fear of change as well as the bestial, alien and barbaric foreigner and what results from mixing that with 'white' civilization. It's not a matter of comparison for me, it's just that numerous avatars of Nyarlathothep are based off of or are the basis for Satan. Azathoth has no relation to Satan, much in the same way that he very possibly has no relation to anything. But the fact remains that Nyarl. is connected to the concept of the devil. It's hard to deny when you look at his avatars; the Black Man, Asmodeus, Set, and numerous others. Nyarl. quite possibly is Satan by being the inventor of the very concept himself.
