It is interesting that Hideki Matsui and Ichiro can't (or don't) speak any English, yet both Yao Ming and Chien Ming Wang can do interviews in English. I wonder if it is something cultural about Japanese players that makes them uninterested in learning English compared to Chinese athletes.

more than just cultural, there's also personal choice influenced by many things (insecurity about accent/expression, using interpreter to field media pressure, etc.) if it's just a cultural difference, why are there non-player japanese who learn english, and non-player chinese who never care to learn after living in US for decades? generalizations are dangerous.

Wheather they can or can not, they have a pressure from Japanese media to Not to speak English at all in Public. It is up to their choice to wheather cut out the connection with Japanese media or not.
