well, the force was supposed to be an unknown thing, but episode one killed that by adding midiclorians. before that, only life forms were allowed to use light sabers. now, anyone can.

the lightsaber automatically turns off when the user even lets go of it, unless its used in a force toss. use Darth mauls fight for reference, they dropped their sabers, they auto turned off, then were forced back and turned on.
