  • zo traag hoorde ik het nog nooit. Maar wel mooi gezongen.

  • Divino y Celestial............

  • just feel what love is all about.............thanks so much for sharing...

  • Precioso.....!!!

  • Mastodóntico.

  • Pathos abounds, which is what so many 'modern' 'original' versions lack. It's almost enough to make you believe in the whole passion story.

I bought this as a box set of LPs from a thrift shop in Germany when I was 11. I still treasure it and love it the best, and I have played in many performances over the years.

  • ¡Excelso!

  • In fact an extra-ordinary performance of this masterpiece. Although Bach could not have any idea of teh Romantic period, what a good idea from Mengelberg to give a clear Romantic touch to this work, that appeals so much to our sentiments. Quite a different thing of the moaning performances we here nowadays with the original instruments. This, to my humble opinion is music pur sang.

  • This was Palm Sunday 1939 and a shitty genius conductor had his day, but Bach signed his work for the glory of god and mengelberg collaborated absolutely with the nazi's.Isn;t Mengelberg better than God

  • The most beautiful Mattaus ever. And not only for this final chorus, but the whole work. How underrated is this Willem Mengelberg, also in his home country.....

    Hans NL

  • i think its not the best way to perform Bach with so changing tempo

  • This is the definitive version of the St. Mathews passion. It was taped, in heaven, by Sony, in 1939!...

  • @Katicooooo It was in fact taped by Philips.

  • fabulous music and painting. latter ridiculously and unforgiveably out of focus. and Pontormo's vertiginous, centrifugal deposition doesn't correspond to bass rythms of ach's music.

  • Mengelberg's interpretation brings you to tears.

  • Ah, my God... what a glorious glorious performance... within 12 months Europe had fallen into war.

  • great ideas in tempo!
