@birgitnilsson I completely agree about her being overrated. But I do think she is a very kind person, who cares about the the art form dearly (from what I know of her from interviews), which is more than can be said for a lot of contemporary singers. I really want to like her singing, I just don't, ugh. There is something strident and spread about her tone. I think she could fix it, and I hope she does.
I don't know why people always criticize because every singer has their own quality and tessitura. Not everybody has the exact same type of voice. Excellent rendition
Kathleen Battle version is alot better than Damrau version. Joan Sutherland takes this song to higher hieghts. If you would want to listen to a great singing then Joan Sutherland is it.
everything is great but i dont like the scooping at the end. is her upper register break at the C-D-Eb range? coz she cant seem to attack these notes precisely...higher notes like E-F-G she hits right on but these lower ones are....i dunno..
my opinion is that she can sing the highest notes with more of an attack instead of coming from below but she chooses to use more of her full voice instead of allowing so much whistle register to come in.. I like both ways personally
excellente articulation! les voyelles sont parfaites!!! meilleures que Dessay. sauf que ses a-a-a-ah sont plutôt o-o-o-oh. elle ne dit pas trésôôôr. elle dit aime et non éme.
Today in day, Diana is maybe the sopranpo that better achieves the lightnesses and them on acute with a fluency, brilliancy and magnificent support. Her color does that we could enjoy a wonderful interpretation, without acute tense that have other sopranoes. This interpretation is extraordinary as the Queen of the Night. Many of us want to be able to enjoy her in live in Mexico. I like to much Katheen Battle and Natalie Dessay as coloraturas, theis "pasta" is another thing, They are great too.
I want to see Damrau in this role. I feel like from this aria alone that Juliette will be the role she will excel in. I love her voice, the warmth, poise, and elegance in it is amazing.
@operalucia1987 - Don't get me wrong, I love me some Damrau in queen of the night, but I don't think you should be comparing a spinto (Netrebko) to a coloratura. They're just too different.
@regulargonzalez Netrebko is a full lyric. But the part can be sung by three voice types really. Fully lyrics, spintos, and some coloraturas (like Damrau).
@jtg10795 Diana Soviero sang this role a lot.. She was famous for French and Verismo roles.... French Soprano roles are often hard because it goes from light to very dramatic.. so often this part is best in a full lyric at least to get the big duets and poison aria( Freni,Scotto, etc)
@OperaBohemian Sorry to disappoint you, but to hear what Gounod wanted (and taught personally!) you'll have to go back to Melba's 1904 recording. And if the ancient sound and old-lady timbre in that one bother you too much, you might try Mado Robin!
you know how when you hear something good then you impose that standard on everything else..? So after hearing damrau I tend to come down harsher on sopranos.. and now that i've heard callas - Lol who's gonna measure up? Callas was just perfect :]
questa cantante è davvero una GRANDE interprete...MUSICALISSIMA...davvero meglio di molte altre che magari han un timbro più suadente ma sono piatte a livello musicale!!!BRAVA!!!
The grace notes are actually written in the score; she's not just putting them in there for the sake of having them there. I guess that's just how Gounod wanted it.
I'm not sure I like the little grace notes she puts in everywhere, and her coloratura is a little mechanical for a lyric coloratura aria, but a strong and charming rendition nonetheless.
For the first time I find myself agreeing with a less-than-raving comment about Damrau. Maybe I'm too used to the Callas recording. She does make up for it with the sheer extasy and cheer she throws into it though. Sigh, what a woman.
Like when they sing furious high E's.

Again: very good, but I like Jacquelynne Fontaine much better: she has the real soul of Juliette! Check my video response below.

ok. diana's singing is great and im a fan of hers. but i think she needs to work on attacking her high notes. sometimes it sounds a bit flat ..
i dunno how to describe it accurately but i feel as if she's attacking the note with a flashlight instead of a laser point..
but great performance nonetheless
raymzi 2 years ago
Interesting ... she sings a closed O on almost all of the runs... instead of Ah..... I think I found her secret... it works for her...
