According to Daniel Ingram, this is the song that was inspired to compose the "Finding a Pet" song in this week's new episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Just for accuracy, Samantha Eggar's vocals in this film were covered by the fantastic Diana Lee, who you can also hear doubling the vocals for Charlie's mom in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" on the song "Cheer Up, Charlie" and in the Burt Bacharach soundtrack of "Lost Horizon" dubbing Liv Ullman on "The World Is a Circle." Just thought you should know!
I love this movie... so many good songs... I absolutely can't stand how when I say Dr. Dolittle people think of the... other one... from the 90's... yuck!!!
I guess my favorite song from this is "My Friend the Doctor" such fanciful lyrics...
This was one of my favourites as a kid, and an odd thing too, that it was reviled by the critics when first released in '69. Funny too, they said the musical scoring was "too grown up & sophisticated" for the kiddies", and yet now here we are, as adults fondly recollecting this whimsical & delighful family fare, 40 years later. It remains one of my favourite scorings for a musical. Lush, heady & quite romantic, it's nice to see how wrong the critics were. It has stood the test of time.
I'm only 14, but this is not only my favorite movie but book as well! I've always been such a weirdo, but hey! I call it originalty. Give me Dr. Dolittle and Fibber Mcgee and Molly over Scrubs and Napolean Dynamite anyday!
If you're only 14 - I'd say you are wise beyond your years - and nice to see one so young, yet most literate! Not to forget too, you likely have excellent taste in all things good and fine. A tip of my hat to you (!)
i have to agree with you, im 17 and this is by far one of the best films ive ever seen, the songs are great and the message is clear (that being treat animals nicely)
AHA! Finally I find this! Hearing "Find a Pet" I knew through the whole ting is sounded familiar! I couldn't remember from where!

Apparently this inspired the "Pet song" from MLP:FiM.
So I had to listen to it :D

This is the Doctor Dolittle I remember from when I was little, not the remake pap.
More than 40 years later, this song is still great. It's a real shame movies don't do lush musical numbers like this anymore.

Nothing beats the original Dr. Doolittle. The remake with Eddie Murphy was stupid as all get out.

Thanks! I don't often get compliments on my classical tastes. You really don't know how much that means to me, even if it was from a stranger :)
