Whoa!!! Awesome. Can you make a video list form the first step? It would be totally exelent. And I'm suscribing to your channel right away. Thanks dude.
I agree that you have fun right away, but the teacher I had (twenty years ago) and many other teachers recommend using picks from the get go if your learning bluegrass.
If your learning Folk and Old time (I play those styles too) strumming is only a minor part of the picture. Look up Rocket Science Banjo. The Doc shows pretty slowed down technique.
Most of all...Have fun. Listen to your favorite style of banjo OFTEN, and find a jam to learn in. Jamming is the best way to pick it up!
I struggle with strumming. I've seen some players picking in a song, and then strumming later on. I really can't strum the strings with the thumb pick without getting caught. And I don't have enough nail on my fingers to just not have picks. What do people do to get around this?
@quantomintomentum i strum it with the back of my index finger using my nail in a backwards motion and it works for me. I too get caught up if i try and strum with picks on, i end up nearly ripping the strings out
@quantomintomentum ....they grow their nails . It hurts my fingers when I pick the hard wire strings and find picks are to loud ... so I use the clawhammer method .... it works fine .
hello.could u please tell me what type of banjo do u suggest for a begginer?each has a different techinc and is destined to play diffenent kind of songs?is 4 string simpler?is 6string more suitable for someone who already play guitar?i dont have any idea...thank you very much.
Personally, I would suggest a 5-string, simply because they're much more common. Tabs are much easier to find for them, and they're very versatile. Six string banjos are pretty cool though, especially if you tune them into standard E like a guitar. It can give a whole new sound to rock songs, I'll tell you that lol.

It depends on what you want to play. For bluegrass it's a 5 string with a resonator. For mountain hillbilly music it's an open back 5 string. the 6 string and 4 string banjos are not for bluegrass.
Don't want to be harsh, but I disagree.

What kind of banjo is this guy trying to teach. In bluegrass, never strum.
jamesshaul 2 years ago
What are you talking about? in about half of most bluegrass songs the banjo strums at the very end.
TheAlmightySchwartz 2 years ago 7
Not to mention that the clawhammer style of banjo playing practically strums all the time
TheAlmightySchwartz 2 years ago 2
@TheAlmightySchwartz Because he is strumming, in bluegrass picking they use picks.
