the four horsemen are the 4 plagues in a medieval thought way. they wanted to make pictures of the things destroying their lands, and since they spread so fast, they made them look like horsemen. and skelletons always were bad and meant death to them... so why not doing it a skelleton-horseman? btw, war was the second rider of the apocalypse, ergo the third-strongest of all 4.
