is this prerecorded? the fact that they talk about the guys who finished 1-2 and noone else, is a little suspicious, tim bayley of iona who finished 2nd the year before had a good chance of winning, he should have theoretically been talked about if the announcers thought he had no chance of winning
this entire race is ruined by the female commentary, it is totaly worthless and shows no insight or knowledge of the 800 meter race, especially after the race finishes and her description of the finish.
Ever notice how the white guys always end up with the crazy finish? They stay in the back and wait until the last 200m. This isn't intended to be sterotyping I'm just saying.
I didn't know that Klansmen were such experts at track and field. Did your Third Reich overlords teach you this "science"? Say hello to Rush, Trent, Ann, Bill O., Newt and the whole gang for me, will you?
800m is a very difficult race...u need to know how much to put in to stay within ur pysical abilities nd to stay in tha race to finish with a good placing...TACTICS...i love it
"they basically run 6 or 700 meters and then line up across the track and decide who has the biggest sprint"
this lady has no understanding of the 800... they're lineing up to see who can slow down the least. The last 100 is almost NEVER the fastest part of the race, and the race is hardly ever decided there.
the last 200 and/or 100 meters is basically were the race IS determined. runners jostle for position for the first 400, by now some lactic acid has built and pick up the pace but when they pick up the pace they really arn't going faster generally, just not decelerating as fast pace, then at the 200 the people still with the pack start to make a move and the women even though as anoying as is, is right they basically line up and see who has most sprint. but there are the few who led th entire way
depends on the type of runner, but for most the idea is that you need to run the race as smoothly as you can without too much jostling or accelerating (some say you only get 2 accels or "moves" in a race). If you pay close attention to most 800 races you'll see that the fast guys in the last 100/200 are the ones who ran smoothly before then. The ones dying are the ones who made 1 or 2 too many accels to fight people off earlier in the race. Last 100/200 is usually determined by first 600.
1) watch yuriy borzakovskiy. The races he does well in are when he's managed to stay close to the pack but out of danger so that he can run the first 500 or so very smooth, then turns on the kick he's so carefully preserved. If you see him not doing well in the last 100 it's because he had to fight in the pack too much.
2) K. Robinson at oly trials. Died in the last 100. This was predictable from when he surged at 200m to fight off another runner to stay in the lead.
It's really hard to tell who's going to win an 800 until ~100 m left because, as you say, everyone is just dying out there. The guys kicking to win are those with the most left, not those with the most sprint. The subtle differences in top end speed are almost irrelevant at the end of a race like this.
@niqcook At the highschool level races are usually decided at about the 450 meter mark to about the 500 meter mark. However, it all depends on the type of runner and the stratedgy they runner uses. My friend beat out another teammate of mine at the last 100 to go to state in the 800.
the reporter at the end.... coachmen did a fine job rabbiting... who rabbits in a championship race? Looks to me like he had the balls to take it out f'in kickers!
Carol Lewis is an absolute idiot! Everything she says is a WASTE! The worst--1:50--What is everybody doing?" He didn't even finish in the top 3! At 2:46...WHAT IS SHE ADDING? Absolutely no insight!

I know that guy leading the pack in the beginning. Larry Brooks from UTSA! He would have own that too if he wasnt sick that day, he got food poisoning the night before...
yay Andrew!!!! Totally loved this. Haven't seen the guy since shortly after highschool. :) So proud!!!! (and congrats to him for being named Michagan's athlete of the year!!)
"That's Tim Bayley from Iona in second position"...apparently Tim Bayley turned black at some point in this race. Carol Lewis sucks at as a commentator.
You don't think it had to do with Carol Lewis and Ryan Browns' shared race do'ya? She's always been biased toward black athletes in the mid-distance races.
doubt it...if anything, it sounded like the commentators knew it was between brown and ellerton so their every move was critiqued...sadly koech was left out of the mix...ellerton ran two consistent laps (from start to finish)
lady, please shut the fuck up you have no clue what youre talking about
i mean a 100-200m sprint after 600-700meters?! no fucking way that's going to happen as your legs pretty much transform into steel
and about that guy who was leading i can tell you that a 800m race is only decided at the end
i hope you are not being paid to narrate track races...

neat to see Washington excel at something.
Also, they got two things wrong in this race:
#1 tim bailey of iona wasn't in second according to the announcer, it was a runner from UTEP
#2 the UTEP runner was labeled as being from Utah
Also, WTF? they should show the top 8 runners
