This song, and lovely Katrina is best at my life, she `s so beauty and great, i love her voice i listening so often and for a long time, great singer in the world.
What about this Eurovision? We each select ONE person to hear an entry from every country, but in English! BUT not knowing where they came from! Jury in Gibraltar or Faroe Islands so no knowledge. Secret! This is phase one of the idea! I, like many in Europe are sick of political voting... mainly from countries that do NOT fund Eurovision! What you think?
@davyboy232 She was Canadian by birth! NOT American!

@saintmirrenmalky I bow to your superior knowledge... but I cannot find if she has taken UK citizenship! She could sing for the UK because she is resident here.
The quintessential 3 minute pop song. Catchy, with feel good factor and a big chorus. I remember watching this live all those years ago. I turned to my then girlfriend and said "Job done. That's the winner".
The song has to be as corney as you can get xD but lovely and defo one of the best ever on Eurovision. I remember everyone going 'yes!' when the assembly teacher used to make us sing it at school in the late 90's when we was like 9 or 10 lol, but shame they don't do real music like that anymore on Eurovision :(
Not all the former eastern block , but only ex-Soviet Union and ex-Yugoslavia .They used to vote each other. Poland , Hungary,Czech, Slovakia has the same problems at Eurovision like western countries
@fodsaks and also will never win again so long as the UK continue to treat it as a joke
The Eurovision is loved and lampooned in the UK.. it gets viewed for the comedy element..., and no serious UK artist would ever put appear on it. Deadbeats represent the UK.. virtual unknowns...or.. acts who are going nowhere (Blue) and have nothing to lose.
@fodsaks no one is daisy chaining each other the UK havent won since simply because they have been shit...name me one entry that has been worthy of winning?
@JoshyouwaMany She may be American but she's lived in the UK since 1976, so she's lived here for 34 years and lived in America for 16 so she's basically English.
Who cares where she came from? Celine Dion has sung in Eurovision and nobody cared! This song had great support from all over Europe! I think it still holds the record for the largest winning margin! Please correct me if I am wrong!
@JoshyouwaMany well that doesn't quite make the band American. As well as it doesn't give America the credit for this song (by that i mean your love :D)
what a song , the UK will never be able to produce a winner as good as this one for a long time , although anybody feel if politically then Uk coalition works out europe might love us again ? Eurovision 2013/4 - UK ?
Can't speak for the rest of Europe. But I've never met anyone that hates you or heard anything negative about the UK here in Norway, dunno what you mean by "hate us politically" If it's the whole Iraq thing you referring to, then I assure you. we blame the US. not you.
@ChaosDMNS I think too much emphasis is placed on the Iraq aspect, mainly because the first year the UK came last (with 0 points) was the year after the Iraq invasion but the fact was it was a naff song badly performed on the night. Even the "voting for your neighbours" element in Eurovision is mostly down to being the langunages you are most likely to understand. More countries singing in English has almost put an end to that.
Quite possibly the last UK winner in my lifetime, and that is an absolute tragedy. But it's what we will get if we have entries like we did from 2003-2008. This shows what's needed - just a great song. Political voting is a hindrance, some it's farcical, but most years the best song does win. This was great.
@josesepecial93 I thought our 2004, 2005 & 2008 songs deserved to win or at least to be in the top 5. The only reason the 2009 entry did better was because the UK did what other countries do and promoted its song and artist in Europe prior to the competition, and the voting was taken out of being totally in the hands of the public again and a voting panel was reintroduced. Not that the panel always got it right when it was 100% panel voting. They made some right clangers - e.g 1989 and 1992.
@BluebirdintheSky 2004, perhaps deserved to be in the Top 5 in a year with not far off a horrific winner. 2005 was a poor attempt at trying to copy the apparent wanted style, and I know there's a video on here with the audacity to compare it to Greece's win in that year. Just nothing special and not worthy of a Top 5 place as far as I'm concerned. 2008 finished last. I don't think Europe gets it that wrong, and not does 67 in the UK chart.
@KrasseChecker I bought the single in 1997, just after Katrina's win. There was this version, plus an upbeat lengthy remix on the same CD. There must be plenty of copies still available on sites like Amazon, I should think. Good luck!
I love this song. Me and my mum love it, i think its one of the few songs that actually shows a unity between all countries :) brothers and sisters :) even if its just for the 3 mins of the song x
go to wikipedia, find Eurovision Song Concert XX (year), analyse voting result from "old" freak european countries. 12 from Cyprus goes to Greece, 12 from Greece goes to Cyprus etc, No comments.
This band were truly great musicians and wrote really good songs. I saw them play a college ball in 1988 at Leicester university and they performed a blistering set, even though the hits had dried up and they had no need to try. They did have a deserved hit in America with 'hat's the way'in 1989, but then silence until this great comeback in 1997. A sadly underrated band who know how to deliver a song like this to win hands down. Superb performance on the night as well.
Its funny to think that UK and Ireland dominated so much of the 90s ESC, yet us Brits winge now that we dont dominate - i dont remember the other countries complain when we had it all sewn up in the 90s!! lol
I remember noel gallagher said before it was released he was thinking bout entering 'all around the world' in the ESC what an entry that would of been. Could only imagine what daft jacket liam would of worn lol
Amazingly this song was switched last minute as 'The Samaritans' theme tune to that years Eurovision Song, we were obviously as committed that year as we are this year.
One of the best UK Entrants by far!! Shame we have had no success since, but think that has alot to do with Eastern Europe and the Balkans, oh and also not having very good songs!!

We're only complaining about the blatantly biased voting going on amongst the trash countries that have been allowed to compete more latterly.
All we ever want is a level playing field.
ArtyEffem 2 years ago
Apparently though, if you took out the bloc voting, the same countries would have scored just as highly, as our patterns were the same.
I see bloc voting is a problem, and having juries back has corrected that.
Got to remember the UK has its own wee bloc with Ireland and Malta. Not as big as the Baltic, Scandinavian or Soveit Bloc, but a bloc all the same!
