This was the first story in the Bible that really got me to look at it in a different light. I mean, sicking bears on kids for calling a guy bald? Wow...
@pernch Yeah, when that pastor read us that story in high school to scare us for having ridiculed our teacher, I was a little shocked to say the least.
@pernch The word LADS in Hebrew is ''naar'' and it means YOUNG MEN and NOT children. This word was used in the Scripture but of course Satan will try and play dirty tricks so that people can hate God. Elisha was going to Bethel wich at the time needed correction the city became idolatrous. Everyone knew Elisha was a man of God specially Satan so would have tried anything to stop God's message been tought in the city. Those "young men" mocked not only Elisha but God's power. Holy spirit.
@rencas And the word that comes before it is "qatan" which means small or young in the context that its used in this passage. But honestly, it doesn't matter if they were chain-swinging street thugs. How is being torn to shreds by bears a reasonable punishment for calling a prophet bald-headed? .
@rencas Hi Rencas, I agree with pernch on this one. Reading the entire passage, which is very small, there is not much context to put there. Children mocked the prophet, he cursed them and they were all mauled to death by bears. The punishment certainly doesn't fit the crime, if you want to call mocking a crime. Does age really make it any more fair and any less vile?
Shit like this shows that these are stories to scare kids out of disobeying or making fun of people in authority. Not much different from the Little Boy Who Cried Wolf...
Hmm, I'm not sure it's most, but there certainly is a fringe group that will do that. None of them like to focus on these parts though, well except the good people at that "school" I went to for 2 years as a child.

@ProudHumanist ALSO I AM VERY SORRY AND DO APOLOGISE on their behalf WHEN YOU SEE CHRISTIAN PEOPLE SHOUTING BAD THINGS AGAINST GAY OR ANY TYPE OF PEOPLE. THEY TRULY DON'T REPRESENT GOD BUT ARE JUST LIKE YOU, PEOPLE WHO NEED GUIDENCE. God is hated by those who don't know him. The only way to know him is by studying his word and willingly obey him.
BTW, I'm familiar with PACE and I find factual errors in the books, ex: 2nd grade Bible PACE defines "damnation - being sent to hell" WRONG, damnation simply means judgment
LOL! I'm sure you're right. I barely remember the paces, cause I was only in there for a couple of years. Age 12-14. Which is good, cause the province I live in doesn't recognize the ACE certification as a high school diploma, so you finish ACE, you still have to take some courses to pass our government exams.
These are things that are NOT taught in Sunday School!! At church/SS, the folks get a watered down, wishy-washy, warm-fuzzy, only-the-nice-parts presentation of the Bible. In 25 years, I've only heard two verses from Joshua taught (..be strong and couragous... and ...as for me and my house....), while Joshua's frequent killing sprees are not even mentioned.
Yeah save the sugary good stuff for the good little sheep and the pagans get bloody genocide. Oh I loved reading the old testament, It was like GTA... only in a book. LOL.
The bible's rules of conduct are obscurities, obscenities and obsolete reasoning mixed with a magnitude of obscene lies. Only a scourger could fulfill all this.
LOL! Fortunately, I was taken out of there by the time I was 14. Some of my peers didn't finish high school until they were about 22 years old, cause the allow you to go "at your own pace." Our province doesn't even recognize the ACE diploma as a high school diploma, so the students still had to take night courses to be recognized.
I don't think many Christians know stories like this one are in the Bible. All they know are a few cherry-picked, treacly tales endlessly purveyed in Sunday school and via such offal as "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and what they learned from Hollywood epics like "The Ten Commandments" and hagiographic hackwork like "Ben-Hur."
I believe you're right. Most Christians I know, at least around here, avoid those odd and atrocious stories like the plague. They hate it when atheists challenge them with these verses. It is entertaining to watch them defend murder, genocide, and infanticide in the context of God. Also very sad and scary. Religion is a hello f a drug.
Good one!! Gods who send out the bears to eat children who make fools of his prophets - of course that is one of his milder moments - he also commits genocide in Genesis - a laugh a day - this monstrous deity.
Great informative videos, luckily I had a fairly secular upbringing, but it's nice to learn how this indoctrination works, and helps the likes of me to understand, what makes christians so afraid and so defensive.

Why do I get the feeling that this particular biblical story was written by a guy who was feeling very insecure about his male pattern baldness?

That's fucked up.

Most Christians are ready to SHOUT Biblical verses of anti-gay sentiment, but shy away from this.

Another ridiculous statement.

Sadly, children are not the only victims of these teachings. Adults are equally as naive / gullible. Thanks for another great video, Red.
