I think that it is possible to "wank" with passion and emotion. Case in point; Vai and Satch. However, the bass fundamental key is the gravy that makes the dish and Devin makes a mean gravy. Passion goes for the basics the same as it goes for anything technical. If it moves no one it doesn't work. Example: Michaelagelo Batio... great timing, excellent speed, crazy coordination.... zero emotion. I love it when the melody is the essence and the "wanking" is jammin to the feeling.
