  • Good vid Rick. I would say that face mask's are good and i have them in my kit but your eyes take in everything that can be inhaled through your mouth. in Asia it is common to see people wearing face masks in polluted areas. Mouths covered eyes exposed ! i sand and seal floors and wear a respirator mask when using solvents and my eyes do get a bit sore after a while. a decent pear of swimming goggles stops this and are less bulky than big chunky goggles. cheers mate good info : )

  • Oh awesome song! This is the same song you put on your bike riding video that you uploaded earlier this year. I remember making a comment on that video about how much I liked that song, and now here I hear it again! Oh wonderful! Thanks. (Sorry for getting sidetracked. I know I should really be listening to what you are saying on this video.) Will do. :-)

  • wind up torches/flashlights are terrible. theyre not overly efficient, typically made cheaply from poor material in china and they waste energy to wind up. better off with a high quality tough flashlight thats tried and tested and a few sets of rechargeable batteries. they take up a similar size in your kits and have more modes and uses.

  • keep cotton balls ,along with matches, to use as quick fuel for a fire

  • pepper spray,baseball bat

  • I would love to learn how to use equipment available and it usable by looting around then just buying it.

  • no weapons?

  • Hi Rick, firsttime I have come across your vid s,gets people thinking ,Ive been into this "survialist /bushcraft" thing for many years now,and what you said is all good,I would include a small basic tool kit,a bolt cutter, for cutting padlocks,& cables,in all realities we in the uk would have to sit tight, stay at home &basically weather the storm either politcal / economic /or N.B.C. coz we have no where else to go,

  • @rickvanman re, the sanitation situation. I have one of those portable bucket style toilets and I keep thick green garden refuse bags to line it with as well as a supply of sawdust which you find in the pet aisle of supermarkets to cover any deposits with. I also store jeyes dry disinfectant to help with any unpleasant odours! You can find information about sawdust toilets on the humanurehandbook website.

  • @lisaloolibell Thanks for the info - very useful!

  • Excellent video!

  • An important point to ake is that waterproof matches dont work if the stricker on the box gets wet.

  • ...wow i just came back from the normal world and it's crazy to see you be prepared like this but i think if something happen you will be the better prepare... if nothing happen... yea i know it's a long debate.

  • @civicturbolive It's just a hobby - so for me it's fun.

  • @civicturbolive "i just came back from the normal world and it's crazy to see you be prepared like this"

    - You mean the norm that is set by MSM / owned by 5 mega corps....the same norm that are referred to as 'sheeple?'

  • Another great video, Rick! Thanks for posting this important information!

  • Too bad you brits can't have guns.

  • @MilitantResistance Because everyone know that you fight a crisis by shooting at it. Too bad you ricains have noting but guns.

  • @MilitantResistance yeah they are closer to becoming slaves overthere :p

  • @MilitantResistance I agree with you my colonial cousin,if we had guns we could half the population of ,,,people that wish to enjoy our way of life,,and then plant bombs on our buses & trains,,,people that take full advantage of our generious welfare system ..but hate western life..hate our tolerance of other cultures,,the new nazi ,,Good luck to you cousin hope you get to keep your right to "bear arms"keep in touch a,

  • @MilitantResistance thats incorrect we can have guns but generally people cant be arsed to fill in the paperwork and numerous checks

  • @MilitantResistance u r actualy allowed a gun they are just quite strict mainly on handguns u can get a shot gun license at any age but u can only buy 1 when 18 a friend of mine got a licese at14

  • If you intend to "Bug in" rather than "Bug out" I would advise you to get a trangia type stove that burns alcohol/meths as this can be used indoors, also you should invest in a USB memory stick then you can scan all your docs and have a copy with you at all times, but don't forget to encrypt the files just in case you lose the memory stick

  • We're planning on staying home if at all possible. In that scenario, we will obviously have to defend ourselves and our family. Acquiring guns and ammo in the USA is also a very important part of emergency preparation. Again, thanks for posting. You always have ideas I hadn't thought about!

  • Hi Glen, Like you my motorhome is my BOV, but in the UK, it would be virtually impossible to bug out unless you were only faced with a highly localised event. Preparedness in the Uk generally means "bugging in".

  • dont forget your Puerto rican credit card aka a gun

  • i do not want to sh!t in a bag!

  • LOL - i don't think anybody "wants" to do that - but if it means the difference between staying healthy or contracting a disease like dysentery.....

  • Now your starting to scare me...DO YOU KNOW SOMETHING WE DON'T???

  • I have a gut feeling that change may be coming our way in the not too distant future. This is just a personal gut feeling, nothing more. Nothing "specific" is showing up on my radar screen as of yet, but it just makes good sense to put yourself in a position where if bad circumstances do come your way, you have the confidence and ability to deal with them, and to see your family safely through them.

  • I've been looking at a product, The 'Jetboil', do you know anything about it and would you recommend it, there are quite a few video reviews about them as well.

  • Just checked it out.

From what I can see it just looks like a small camp stove that has its own pot with a windshield.

Not a bad design, but pretty expensive for what it is.

I would only invest in something like this if money was no object.

  • RVOPs are selling them for £51.75,

I've also been looking at a 'Get Home Bag' Which seem like a good idea if you get stranded somewhere or just as a general survival pack.

Search for (GHB - Phase 1.)

  • A regular stove is about £10 - £15 so you pays yer money and takes yer choice!

I was going to do a video about a get home bag - seems more feesable than a BOB - where a bug-out situation is highly unlikely in the UK (nowhere to run to without meeting crowds or other people!)

Although a get home bag could still double up as a BOB in a worst case scenario.

  • This is quite an appropriate series. I don't know if you've heard about what has been happening in Cumbria, but it has been serious. Flooding caused an evacuation of our halls of residence and we simply weren't prepared and two major towns have also been flooded, however the emergency services have been fantastic.

Have a look on BBC news

  • Hi Mark. Kev told me about the floods today (I don't usually watch the news!). Hope you're OK.

Once the water receeds, I would urge you to remember this experience and embrace the idea of preparedness :o)

Let me know if you need anything.

    Rick

  • May I add that investing in a wood stove, or similar is a good idea, as it provides heat, some light and you can cook on them.

  • consider making Survival wax for bugouts or camping. its a great fuel source. but water is not a problem when you own a WELL and a generator! like most americans that dont live in a city.

  • Dare I mention this but in the event of a serious crisis, we should all have the means to defend ourselves. I realise this may be an unpleasant thought but there's a saying - Mankind is only three meals away from anarchy.' Same principle applies to major power cuts. If the lights go out then after the initial novelty wears off, the "thin veneer of civility and respect starts breaking down. Something to be aware of. I guess that's another reason to be able to generate electricity at home.

  • Absolutely right. Folks in non-free states (by which I mean citizens don't/can't generally own firearms, e.g. everywhere but the US) should be especially creative. It would be a great idea to collect tools and items which you can use to fabricate basic weapons like spears.

For example, Paracord as we call it in the US (parachute cord), is a thing of ultimate usefulness. Lash a bit of metal onto a pole or branch, and you've got a spear. Also great for sewing, just a ton of things.

  • Tea Tree oil makes a great anti-septic and cold fighter/preventer. Been talking to a few Aussies who use a tea-tree based nasal spray just before they go into public areas. Not one of them has had a cold for a long time. Not sure what the product is called or if it's available over in the UK.

Expedition grade water filters are also useful.

  • Another great video instructional.

    Long may you continue.

  • well thought out! great info. And the British terms i find so entertaining! I wish we spoke like that on this side of the pond. lol.

  • Rick, man... this series is truly awesome... well thought-out... a great idea!!

    Take care,

    Patrick

PS- I put back 6 jugs of water last night. =)

  • oh yea.. and ROVER is considered Food. editable! chickens are nice too, so are rabbits. anything on 4 legs is food.

  • from what i understand, those face masks are not worth the paper they are made out of. they will not protect you from biological. they are ment for air particals such as paint or dust, not boilogical.

  • A face mask is as much about stopping you from touching your own mouth as it is about stopping other nasties from getting in, we all touch our eyes and mouths all the time with out even thinking about it and most of the time it's ok but when there are viruses and germs about you don't want to do this, the only thing that will stop all things is a gas mask but you don't want to have to walk about in one of those thing unless you "have" to, a particle mask is the best compromise in the meantime.

  • toutching your face is a concern, but it doesn't matter when the virus can flow right through it as if it wasn't there.

think about it.. you re-adjust the mask, pench the nose bar.. then take it off later, then use it again.. oops.. you contaminated your self. being medically trained, i know better.. just trying to give you a heads up.

  • All true, still some mask is better than no mask, maybe the best compromise would be those masks with the filters like paint sprayers use.

  • actually, the best compromise is a Wet bandanna that is re-wetted and washed with soap each time regularly. Water is a natural insulator to biologicals. not so much for chemicals. even still does little to no protection.. best is just to avoid the area of contamination.

  • remember, Flue virus can only live outside of the human body for a short distance, 5 - 10 feet. it can live on the surface at normal room temprature with a little sweat for days. but it dies on contact with soap and clean water.

  • thats why it's a good idea to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer just inside your front door, I keep mine on a shelf just inside my apartment and the first thing I do when I get home is use it, I also make a habit of washing all my door knobs and bannisters once a week, this may seem a little exccesive but I haven't had flu or a cold in five years which is about the same time I started doing this, it also dosen't hurt to slip out and spray communal door handles with anti bactirial once in a while

  • man, i dont do any of that, and i still dont get the flue.. and havent for years. i just know how to wash my hands, and not pick my nose!

  • LoL, me too, but I use a lot of public transport and not everyone is as good at washing their hands as we are, I really don't wanna think about how many people have hung onto the handrails on some of the buses and trains I've used in the past few years... or what they may or may not have been touching before they did.

  • suicide in the furture will be to go on a public transport, and LICK everything! lol.. suicide by YUK.. lol.

  • LoL, Indeed!

  • Dang just get to the point this is youtube!

  • What about a weapon? A good English cross bow and long sword since bullets will not be available to purchase.

  • I understand it is illegal to own a weapon for the purposes of self defense in the UK.

It's certainly illegal to carry any form of weapon in public.

  • Do'nt get me wrong. It is well known that food, shelter, and water are the 3 most important areas of survival. But if there is lack of water and food, friends become dangerous and you need to think of home protection. Just knowing were is your biggest kitchen knife or your nail gun may be helpful. Keep making this series, I like you how to videos. Tell Youtube to place new banners. They keep placing the same old ones.

  • I have been involved with the martial arts for 60 years. Consider improvised weapons. Do a YouTube search on the key words: "improvised weapons". These videos will bring you up to speed in minutes. My favorite improvised weapon is a can of tuna inside a heavy sock. This weapon can be used like a NUNCHUCK. A 24 inch by 1/2 inch round wood can substitute for ESCRIMA sticks. Learn to throw a knife...then you can throw anything - scissors, forks, screw drivers....get the picture?

  • friend you said it there.. even a pencil is a weapon. but i preferr broadheads.

    :)

  • compound bow! cross bows are illegal in many places. but long bow or compound bows are usualy not illegal.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions - I actually have some defensive contingency plans in place - just not prepared to divulge them here.
