chemicals are weird, I find it fascinating. The simplest thing can change something so radically. Is it the sulfur directly? Likely, yeah. Or it the fact that there are three more oxygen's in there too? I mean. one more electron turn solid gold to liquid mercury. So elements are quite finicky. Just because something's bad for you doesn't mean you can't eat it. Like salt. makes you wonder sometimes for all the elements besides sulfur, if there's a compound that makes it turn digestible. :)
I've never seen this reaction before; it kinda reminds me of the Pharaoh's Serpent reaction, though that one is obviously a lot more dramatic ... On the other hand it's not exactly suitable for the high school classroom!
@DannyNHansen I've performed this demonstration many times at school in front of classes. As long as you are an experienced chemist and the reaction is properly risk assessed there nothing unsuitable about it. Once the carbon is cooled the remaining acid can be washed out and the carbon is safe to handle.
I once got some concentrated ~96% H2SO4 on my skin. I spilled a drop in my fume hood and accidentally rested my arm where it landed.
The drop touched my skin on the gap between my glove and labcoat causing an instant hot burning sensation.
I washed with cold water immediately for half an hour. It caused burn blisters on the area and after 2 days the affected skin flaked off, looking like an abrasion.
Now 2 months later it is still clearly visible on the skin looking sort of like a birthmark.
@thien369852 No, it's not just carbon. It has lots of still pretty strong sulphuric acid embedded in its pores, as well as products of incomplete carbonization of sugar. It is a sour, poisonous mass that would burn your mouth quite horribly.
@jbeer82 I was boiling the Acid (30 ml) , then it for some reason it tipped, lucky i had two pairs of Bombay bloomers they didn't touch my skin around my legs.
You should tell what concentration you are using, 6mol/L, 30mol/L? I highly recommend people to visit nurdrage channel, it's awesome, chemistry Ftw!!!
@mtksbctk Don't judge my intellect based off my knowledge in chemistry. It's presumptuous and ignorant of yourself. The comment I previously left was a joke btw. Thought that was obvious.

@domcoltman That's the so-called "clbuttic mistake", which happens when obscenity filters go wrong and create phrases like "President Abraham Lincoln was buttbuttinated by an armed buttailant after a life devoted to the reform of the US consbreastution."
@cosmiceon Its probably not "that much". If you look at the carbon you'll see it has "craters", probably caused by the boiling effect and making the carbon have big "bubbles" of gas inside.
Another limerick that my Chemistry teacher told me,
"If you think your life's too placid
