  • i have this movie love it

  • You never see the truck driver's face in this movie.

  • A very good film! I could live our protagonist's tension!!

  • great trailer duel steven spielberg. Who does not like a

chase between a car and a truck crazy. I loved this movie and it shows that the war between the car and the man is simply the way we live in: war.

  • Old slant 6 225 wouldn't care if it over heated. One of the best motors ever built

  • There are SO MANY elements of comedy in this movie, that one just HAS to "LOL"...or have a panic attack. Either way, you pee your pants...and maybe worse!

  • I WOULD OF BEEN SCREAMING LIKE A CHICK !

  • WTF

  • It was Dennis Weaver driving the Valiant.

  • Oh my God! He's gonna die because he doesn't have a............

cell phone!!!! How did we ever survive with out them? It's amazing we made it this far.

  • @helvis66 I hate cellphones! hehehehe

  • Best thriller ever. I watched this so many times over my lifetime. It's brilliant. Genius work really, considering it was filmed in just 13 days! and edited within a week or less. All that driving from different angles must have taken ages to set up and shoot each time.

  • at 1:40 only 5000 miles on odometer, why did hose go bad already?

  • One of my fav movie

  • Why not leave the car and run high into the mountains?!! :)

  • @Atramentumink Gee, man, they looked pretty steep, didn't they? And I didn't see the protagonist happenchance carrying any mountain-climbing equipment. And did he strike you as so skilled in mountain-climbing? He didn't strike me as such! hehehe

And what if whatever psycho might have been in the truck ALSO got out with a gun? What then, man? hehehe

Nope! Nothing wrong with the movie there either! hehehe

  • excellent movie, it just engulfes the viewer emotionally without any over the top visual action or special effects, truly a masterpiece ! american classic .

  • i think i can, i think i can

  • Love this movie and just bought it

  • The music in this scene is brilliant. I love the part from 3:38-3:46

  • If I made that movie I would have had old Chester Good from Gun smoke stop and pull out a 45. let the driver of that semi have it

  • @Technoid52 Hehe half the movie, I was wondering if there was ANYONE driving that weird big scary truck! Jeez, that could have been Satan at the wheel for all I knew! hehehe Or maybe NO ONE at all was driving that terrorizing filthy rust-colored predatory truck! hehehehe Maybe a mindless monster, the truck itself being alive, and wholly ravenous and utterly and murderously malicious! Damn! hehehe

That driver(?), or, more specifically, his/its truck, was fucking scary! hehehe

  • Valiants were buttleproof!!!! Chrysler products were the best engineered cars and trucks....

A major stunt man was Carey Loftin. He prefered Chrysler products because of the torsion bar and leaf spring suspension! No american car could outhandle a Chrysler product. Loftin was the main driver in Vanishing Point and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World all using Chrysler products....

Bill Hicks was another stunt man that prefered Chrysler products!

Check out Wikipedia for more on Duel....

    '

  • Valiants were buttleproof!!!!

  • This is my alltime fave movie. Saw is when I was little and it scared the heck out of me but I loved to be scared. What an effin psycho that truckdriver is!

  • this is a masterpiece. i mean, there's one person (as mainrole) and two vehicles in the whole movie and spielberg tells it in such a dramatic way, you just have to watch it. besides, this is one of those god damn movies, i always have to watch when i crumble upon on tv.

  • very good

    arizona???

  • very good

  • What's your favourite car chase????? Check the video on my channel and vote on what is your favourite car scene ever!

  • Gave me nitemares for months

  • Should have had a VW R32 :)

  • I meant Weaver, sorry to the late actor

  • Dennis Hopper was such a wimp in this movie

  • @zubazskidz1 Dennis Hopper!? I don't remember Hopper EVER even PLAYING a "wimp" in any movie he was in, which he wasn't even in this movie at all! What are YOU on about? ??? :|

  • Mopar is crap he shouda had a ford as they are always first on race day and they had the best motor ever made the 390

  • Next time get the Hemi!

  • great film them old petes are so sinister

  • an Oldsmobile

  • Btw my dad has a Peterbilt. I got my permit last year and I love driving that thing around..Especially in the city xD Funny thing is is that the truck is as dirty as that one :D

  • Comment removed

  • This makes me wanna watch that terminator 2 truck chase :D, that was so good!

  • Shouldn't have gone with a Mopar....Valiant LOL!!!!!!

  • @tcannariato

David Mann is a pencil pusher. A family man who goes on business trips with his Valiant. Why would a man with 2 kids and wife drive some supercar?

Also, even if David Mann had a faster car he's not Mario Andretti and can't control the car at those speeds in those conditions. Hey, why don't you try driving your car at those speeds in long corners with oncoming traffic and see how long you'll keep it on the road.

He's not driving on a dead straight highway.

  • @McLarenMercedes Well, let me see, I drive an 08' Z06 so I think my car will not have much of a problem handling corners, straight-aways, or traffic, it is a great car all around....I love it!!!

  • @McLarenMercedes That's a good point--usually the higher the car's performance, the trickier it can be to drive. And high-performance cars are often driven by guys who overestimate their ability behind the wheel. I've seen three cars spin out on the highway--two Corvettes and a Mustang GT. The car may have great cornering ability, but the driver often doesn't!

  • @tcannariato Yeah! McLarenMercedes asks a perfectly reasonable question! So why would that be what you say? ??? That wouldn't have made much sense LOL hehehe

Ugh! It's a good thing YOU didn't make that movie, or it would sucked BADLY LOL HAHAHAHA hehehehe

  • Damn, should have had that hose replaced!

  • This film was a genuinely scary horror film because the monster was entirely believable.

(Large Truck vs Family Car = Truck Winner, Car Loser.)

You don't really get to see the crazy road raging trucker himself that well, so it was his menacing looking truck that became the object we all feared.

This would make a great 'Road Safety' film because I saw Duel as a kid and I have never quite looked at semi-traliers the same way since.

Even now I have a healthy respect for what a truck can do.

  • Should have just called On-Star

  • in the motorstorm video game series, there is a usable semi truck based on the truck in this movie.

  • It's in 'Neutral' because he is trying to cool the motor and is coasting downhill.

  • @5:18, transmission selector is in "neutral"! Maybe that's why he's having problems! (LOL!)

  • @tripjet999 Huh? Of course it's in neutral, he was driving up a mountain with no coolant when the hose let go and the oil got so hot it basically vaporized, causing the pressure to crash and if he hadn't put it into neutral and coasted down the other side he would've blown the head gasket to pieces in addition to roasting the bearings, etc. In reality the engine would've burned up long before he reached the top driving like that...

  • this is y plymouth went out of business

  • @uarelosers12 LOL right, cause of spielberg? Or was it cause society persuaded you to buy a honda? Next you should watch christine unless you havent already.

  • @crashroader LOL nice! And John Carpenter's 'Christine' is an awesome film! And that Plymouth Fury is ALSO very awesome! Well, I mean SHE is, unless she's trying to kill you, all vehicular-manslaughter-like LOL hehehehe

  • trying to find this classic on dvd but no success. love it

  • FAIL... VALIANTS DONT DIE EVER!!!

  • I love this film, although there are slightly illogical bits in it. It makes me want to buy a Plymouth Valiant!

  • This was one of the best scary movies ever made. No gore, just the horror of a pychotic truck driver harrassing a jerk car driver. The ultimate in road rage. Scariest because there's a lot of psychos on the road. Sure wish my car had the pickup of that truck, must be a Mac.

  • @emckane How was David Mann a jerk?

  • @emckane tis a perterbuilt

  • This was one of the best scary movies ever made. No gore, just the horror of a pychotic truck driver harrassing a jerk car driver. The ultimate in road rage.

  • nowadays cars are gay this one kicks asses high

  • If he bought a Honda Civic that wouldn't have happened.

  • @WhaleBlueTwentyTwo

You're right. He he wouldn't have made it to that point to happen, because the Civic would have lost the fight at the railroad crossing and the movie would have ended there. =P

  • @WhaleBlueTwentyTwo Because the honda wouldn't even make it up the slope.

  • @Linkk22 Ah, but the Civic's reliability would have ensured there'd have been no trouble with the pipes. =p

  • when i saw this as a kidd - all i thought was too have a rifle or a handgun too stopp the man of the truck

  • i remember this i watched it when i was like 5 xD

ive been looking for the name ever since, until i came across a truck that looked exactly same, and it said "from the movie Duel" i was like YEEEEAAAA

  • One of the all-time great movies. I remember watching it with my Dad back in '71. He got all worked up and was mad because Dennis Weaver didn't get out and say "Let's settle this." If didn't matter that he finally did try to catch the truck on foot.

  • They used three valiants to make this film. two had the slant six, one was the 318 v8. which is why you can see when the hood's up, it's clearly a slant six engine, yet in other scenes its got the 318 badge on it. they used a couple of trucks too. there are detail differences between them

  • I havent seen this flick in years...thanks guys

  • it's an exellent movie but can somebody explain why is this truck chasing this guy in plymouth in the first place???????? is's been puzzlin me for years......

  • Comment removed

  • @Fiume156AR

They (the writers) leave that up to you...Was it road rage because the Valiant passed the old semi? Or was the driver of the semi just nuckin futz and out for a thrill, either way futz. Maybe the driver of the valiant manifested the whole thing and it was just a desert mirage (lol). Weaver is first rate in this- what a trip.

  • @ubiquim Yep! For a good deal of the film, I was wondering if it might have been that the protagonist was unknowingly a bit cuckoo and maybe the truck didn't actually exist except in his mind! :O

hehehe This is such an awesome film! It's no wonder Spielberg later hit the big time, starting with such an amazing first effort as this! hehehe

  • @Fiume156AR: Because the guy in the car went around the truck or something.

  • This movie scared the shit out of me as a kid. I was terrified of semis for half my childhood. lol

  • @zachm2448 dude so was I! Love it now tho!

  • @zachm2448 Only be scared of the flammable trailer trucks. XD

  • @zachm2448 LOL You too?

  • Top film

  • swiss on rye

  • Im only 14 but this is one of my favourite films, its fantastic considering the simplicity of the plot. Another thing, i've always wondered what it would be like if the guy was driving a Roadrunner :)

  • my favorite movie...at least one of them

  • The movie suggests about Stiven Spielberg proficiency in cinematography, and film industry general.

  • God I hate that damn truck! It's like an insecure and clingy ex-girlfriend that just never goes away.

  • @braincrisp1: I like the truck... just as long as it doesn't try frickin' to kill me!

  • @braincrisp1

you don't say. i can relate to that

  • @braincrisp1 An OLDER clingy ex girlfriend.

  • @braincrisp1 That clingy ex-girlfriend can never be as sexy as the truck.

  • IF THE GUY in the truck ,had of dumped the trailer ,then, the car would have stood no chance ,AT ALL

  • best movie in history

  • Can someone explain to me what is going on in this scene? I haven't seen this movie before. Which one is the bad guy? the truck or the red car?

  • go to land the car. When he gets rid of

  • When he says, "the radiator hose!" it's especially effective because he was asked if he wanted it replaced earlier in the movie. Considering it's a low budget TV movie Spielberg did a hell of a job--and it's certainly better than Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

  • Lol i loved this movie,,,that poor lil Valiant was a die hard lmaooooooo

  • @robbie4035able You use the words Stupid and Idiot - enough about you - What didya think of the movie?

  • Comment removed

  • @ceadmileuk a truck driver loaded has to go through a lot of gears going up grade and you dont want to slow him down. going down grade he wants to keep a low speed by using a lower gear so he dont burn his brakes. dennis dont seem to realize this. I have had people do me the same way. Dont you understand?

  • @robbie4035able The empty fuel tank the trucker needed to fill was on the oppisite side of the truck trucker got pissed again.

  • @robbie4035able By part 4 the trucker had enough .

  • @robbie4035able Some roads out west the speed limit is 70 mph. dennis got what he deserved . He should have not kept passing the truck and slowing down on an upgrade.

  • @ceadmileuk it was a dumb ass movie. you smart ass. remember subject and nouns?

  • Ah the good old days when the cars chases were REAL!!!!!!!!

  • This is a great great classic!! i actually got it on dvd

  • does anyone know what the story line behind this movie was....?

  • @TopGun11980 well if i memba right in the beginning the guy was folling the truck moving slow, so he cut off the truck driver and to make long story short the truck driver started folling him on the road and dinners and shit until the end of the movie. the truck driver's face is never seen.

  • Listen salesman, I don't need a Challenger or Charger just give me a Valiant. Why do I need to be able to go fast? Am I going to be chased by a madman in a big truck?

  • Old truckers never die, they just get a new peter built.

  • @cheddyrod new peter?

  • @TonyFirelli Yes, definitely!

  • @hobokenplayboy It's a 1970 - but still sad to see it destroyed

  • @jferg7159 I have done some additional research. It is a 1971 model. You can tell by the hubcaps and the style of side marker lights. The scenes with the 1962 Dodge school bus and the " rear shove at the railway crossing" were added later using a 1972 Plymouth Valiant. Two additional scenes were filmed to make the movie 90 minutes long for international theatrical release.

I do admit I was wrong. Thank you.

  • This kind of reminds me of running from linking a Youtube account to a Google account.

  • I think I know what this guy did because people do it to me all the time. He pulled into a Pilot to gas up his car and blocked the one and only diesel pump when all the other gas lanes were wide open. If so he's only getting one tenth of what he deserves.

  • @5:57 most sinister

  • I luv this Movie! I used play the all of it wiv a toy Car & Truck! =)

  • I find the movie funny as hell

  • Spielberg wanted the truck to be the villan, not the driver. He has a range og trucks to choose from and chose this one because it resembled a face. The other trucks were too standard, but this old peterbilt truck was perfect, they made it look like a villan to show it was king of these roads. The licence plates on the front shows the victims the truck has defeated.

The movie is showing the truck as a murderer.

  • Why didn't he just pull over & ask the nice trucker man for a lift? :-)

  • There IS NO motive for the truck driver chasing him, the guy who actually drove the truck, cary loftin (spelling? not sure) asked the same question of spielberg. "why am I chasing him?" the answer apparently was "because you're a dirty no good son of a bitch!"

  • This movie was ahead of it's time. It would look really awesome in 3D

  • THAT FUCKING SEMI.

  • It premiered on ABC's movie of the week on Tuesday nights at 8:30....

when television was still about entertainment and not the shitrag of reality shows that is today... or as Jerry Lewis said on Letterman one night..."anything to make a quick buck!'

  • @Lewis1key I remember Tuesday night at the movies on TV! Some awesome entertainment back then. Do you remember one starring Barbara Eden, sci-fi. She was made pregant by some inseen alien, she was eating raw coffee, sleeping in the cold. A real nail biter. But I don't remember the title of the flick :(

  • one of my favourite films of all time, the truck is freaking scary looking

  • Underated Spielberg Classic ...

Dennis Weaver was great in this film !!!

  • Great movie! It's was a stupid movie but it was also one of the hottest movies. Weird

  • @desmondruff It's not really stupid. You run into people like that on the road just like you run into them on a dark street, late at night. They DON'T NEED a reason.

  • Such a simple story...but a nerve-shredder !!!

  • i remember when i first saw this movie when i was younger i always got freaked out by big trucks like the one in this movie, same with Maximum Overdrive :P

  • LOL driving a Dodge Dart that overheats! Sorry MOPAR folks but that was not your most shining moment.

  • @XOkie

Plymouth Valiant, but as the cart has taken quite a beating and it's in the desert it's not a surprise. Usually these were tough, simple cars, a bit like the Hillmans we had in England- part of Chrysler.

  • @XOkie it was a radiator hose that blew that led to it overheating, a motor tends to do that when its looses its coolant, it does not mater what car it is.

when you run a car overheated it can do allot of damage ( it can lock up, smoke like hell, loose power, stop running, and so on.

  • I love that 281.

  • This & christine r both good movies....

  • The car starts back up just after the end of this vid. Yeah baby! Slant Six will never die!

  • ラヂエーターホーーース!!!

  • 70 movies will always be the best !

  • Seems like when I was young in the 80s Duel came on every other Friday night on WTBS (other Friday night Dirty Dozen) TBS used to show great old movies like this one, not so much anymore.....

  • @Poncho389 yeah. Or another great one back then that was on was Force 10 from Navarone!

  • @Sodiumreactor Yeah! I forgot about that one....Chuck kicks ass! TBS used to be my favorite channel. Movies Dirty Dozen, Duel, Patton, Airplane Dirty Harry...and I loved the TV stuff...Barnaby Jones,Perry Mason, Barney Miller,Dragnet, WKRP in Cincinnati,Braves baseball (all of the games or close to all) They were awesome back then.

  • @Poncho389 yeah they WERE awesome back then. TV just isnt as good these days.

  • Bravo mr Steven Spielber!!

  • fuckin leech trucks.....

  • the truck is really scary :)

  • @mac200509 I like the black smoke coming out of it.

  • @Thinker669 and the part when the truck driver makes the sign with he's hand to pass... :D In real life every time I pass by a truck I'm scared from this movie :D haha

  • A Chrysler 225ci slant six can run without water, oil pressure, ect. You just can't kill those things.

  • i partially saw this movie many years ago but never understand why the guy in the valiant got chased so freaky by the guy in the rusty ol" Pete!!!

  • Simple, there is no reason, seriously, I've watched it multiple times and can still find no reason why the truck driver wants dennis weaver dead

  • well...thats freaky. thanks for answer,a mistery has now revealed: there,s no mystery at all ,just a freak -wacky-nut truck criver who was pissed off with dennis waever!!

    regards.

  • That is usually all the excuse a nutjob needs to go on a killing spree: "I'm pissed off at the world so I'll pump some bullets into innocent people."

  • yeah,you're right

  • One of my all time favourite movies, a must see. Terrific actions sequences and suspense, real edge of the seat stuff!!!

  • awesome movie

  • this is one of the best movies ever from my childhood. seen it at least 30 times.

  • Its a brilliant movie IF you can get past all the continuity failures.

The smoke the truck is making is obviously fake much of the time, a front tire on the truck mysteriously gets changed, etc.

  • @Ghostrider0

Your wrong about the smoke being fake man. Keep in mind that truck is from the late 50's or very early 60's. Diesel engines were not as clean as they are today. The ones back then had sediment bowls and mechanical fuel pumps, and the engines did not burn the fuel completely. These trucks only got around 1-5 miles per gallon. Check out this site for the specs on the duel truck:)

  • how did he get a bleeding mouth

  • @TheBrett56

use your brain, his car knocked into somethign, he may have bit his tounge.

  • This is an absolutely amazing movie. If anyone enjoyed this movie, I recommend watching "Christine", another classic car movie.

  • @Patrickisreallygreat yeah Christine is ok but I like lots of chase scenes in movies like The Wraith.

  • @Patrickisreallygreat check out the car too!

  • Not enough words describe how fucking awesome this movie is.

  • @nevaseenamancry amen borhter! although it was very scary when the truck rolled up out of nowhere

  • jaw duel best film of steven spielberg

  • The breaking sound at 0:07 sounds exactly like the ones from the 18 wheels of steel games :)

  • It's funny when you see Steven Spielberg sitting in the back from the rear view mirror one of my all time favorite films
