@halomaster22323 There is no need to tell me how to spell Beteigeuze, Halomaster. The star was named long before American or Japanese people got to know. So just leave it as it is.
@etacarinae99 Wtf I live in America But I'm from Japan & I don't pronounce it like Beteigueze. I pronounce it like Betelgeuse not Beetle Juice. It's very simular to how you say it but Betelgeuse is correct. Without an I & without a Z.
and u really think, pronounciation like "Beatle Juice" is correct for this red supergiant???? If YES, then it is only american or japanese arrogance and incompetence to spell it the right way, but not correct at all.
well VY canis majoris is 2.6 billion times greater than the volume of our sun... hmm lets just say that betelgeuse is the small star and VY canis Majoris is the big star in the picture at 1:02
eta carinae is even bigger than betelgeuse at like 100-150 times the size of our sun and that picture makes it look as if betelgeuse is easily over 1000 times bigger than our sun. I have read in many places that betelgeuse is around 20 times bigger.
the star named betelguese was the star biggest than the sun and the Earth. so it means, if that size of star is going to hit the Earth, it is possible to not see the even the pieces of our planet.
the part of 300 million times more volume than the sun is bull sh@t becouse the biggest star known in the milkyway, eta carinea is 300 times the weight or mass of the sun a volume of 300 million times the sun is inpossible
dude, you're clueless lmao....eta carina is shit compared to VY Canis Majoris. and wtf? what has diameter and volume to do with mass? Sun has a diameter of 1 million km, wile VY Canis Majoris has the diameter of about 3 billion km, so that's 3000 times the diameter of the sun, so the volume is incomprehensible by the human mind. gonna send you a PM with a link to a video to make an idea about it
1. his mass is millions of times that of the sun, taken that it has the same density of the sun (impossible haviest found yet is 300 times suns mass) 2. the density is absurtely low (impossible as well becouse if you start calculating you would come to the conclusion that its around the same density of stone wich isnt enough for nuclear fusion) 3. we dont understand stars well enough en there might be some other reason why its so bright other than being extremly big
yea, because of the size, the nuclear reactions are very intense, a star this size will live for a few millions of years, and colaps into a black hole without even a supernova. but yea, mass has nothing to do with what I replied to you. I was talking about pure volume
well the heaviest star found yet: eta carinea (VY i dont count since they havnt figured out the mass yet) she is 300 times the mass of the sun AT MAX explain to me why everywere i look i see its suposed to have a diameter of about 1500 times that of the sun. with such a diameter it has a colume of hundreds of thousands times tha tof the sun so i ask: why is it still only 300 times the suns mass? that would mean a density to low for nuclear reactions
um nope.... the density of a star is calculating with a medium of overall density. at the surface, in the first millions of km, it had a density incredibly small, thousands of times less then our atmosphere, but the core is incredibly dense, it's impossible to calculate it's density. but because the core is so small in ratio with the volume of the exterior "shell", the overall density is small. hope that clear things up.
you are overstating things: the upper layers of a star are not that well undense (im not from england so my vocabularie isnt really good) im only counting the layers you see that produce light not the immense unvisible outer layer surrounding the star but still i made a calculation for the average density and i hope your not trying to tell me that for example betelgeuze has a average density of more than 25000 times LESS than that of the sun?
well my friend the upper visible layer needs a density far bigeer than our atmospher to be able to be so bright. and whenn just for the idea you were right about that would that then couse a star with a averige denisty of 1/25000 of that from the sun?
no dude, they don't have to be dense. just use google to search about it. you'll see that I'm right. or wikipedia, I'm sure you'll find an article there
well thats my whole poit a star HAS to be extremely dense or it wont have nuclear fusion and also if it isnt dense enough the outer layers will escape into space becouse the density of an object decides the gravity and with such a low density the inner force pointed outward would overcome the gravity
first point is right second point: reason that a star doesnt collapse any further under its own gravity is becouse of the explosive force from the nuclear fusion (also reason why it collapses at the end of its life whenn that power disapears) 3. a combination of density and mass decide the gravitation. thats why a black hole of about the mass of 10 suns has more gravity then a giant star like eta carinea
that's the way it is, bigger the star, less denser it is. same thing applies to black holes. smaller the black hole, denser it is. another interesting fact about black holes is that the bigger then get, the more oval they appear to be. the universe is a strange place m8
and nobody knows the density of a black hole there is actually alot of speculation of black holes being a singularity meaning its density is infinitely large
well that makes it a irrelivant and non real average density since you know nothing of the real density whenn you just take empty space with you in your calculations making it totally useless as an argument
99.99999999999 % of an atom is empty space. or maybe 99.999999991.everything is speculative or inclines to speculation in our world dude. nothing is sure
dude dont fail now pls we were having a good dicusion so dont come with the crapo of everything is speculative nothing is sure
come on man i hope you know a black hole does not exist out of atoms even a neutron star already exists of compact atom cores without the empty space dont fail me now
we know its made of something but of what is unknown and if its idnead a singularity it doesnt even exist out of small particles but out of ifititely condensed energy in its purest form
it can't be a singularity just because that means that it would be infinitely small, meaning that it's gravity would be infinitely big, so all the universe would be it's even horizon, but it isn't. "singularity" it's just a word to explain something incredibly small, that humans can't understand. at least for now :)
the power would be infititely strong but becouse of the short range of gravity it wont suck up the universe in a certain area the strenght is indeed infinite but becouse of the short range it wont destroy the universe

Betelgeuse looks a bit like the sun in colour (without atmosphere.) You see, it only appears red with atmosphere. Without atmosphere, it appears orange like the sun. Yet it is calassed as a "red" supergiant...hmmm.......
why does everyone keep going on about bigger stars ??? betelgeuse is massive beyond anyones imaginination. i knw there are much bigger stars. but comon peeps lets crawl before we can walk
you'll see betelgeuse's supernova in the daytime it'll be that close. vy canis majoris i'm not so sure of, it's a lot farther away and the dust in between will diminish it. As long as the gamma rays from the supernovas don't turn us into a planetary oven then I don't mind a solar system being deystroyed for a few weeks worth of sightseeing, lol.
You're right but the Pistol Star and Eta Carinae are two of the most massive stars known, so they might have the most powerful supernova explosions. Although they aren't the biggest in volume they have greater mass.
the process repeats, except every new nuclear reaction happens faster and faster (silicon, the last element before it reaches iron if I recall correcty, burns in a copuple of seconds!). and then youg et you supernova, any way, Betelgeuse appears to show a 15% decrease in radius, which means it must be contracting, which it's about to poop the cork any time soon
there's actually some proof that betelgeuse is going supernova any second now. See when a star that big runs ou of hydrogen , it will start to contract, without the thermonuclear fusion it contracts, pressing on the remaining helium inside intil it reaches the temperature necessary to start the fusion of helium into carbon. That's the point at which Betelgeuse is now.
¿Hellium? I think that Betelgeuse now is burning carbon in its core, and hellium in a layer around the core. Fos this reason, this star may explode in some point of next 1000-10000 years. It will happen when its core gets full of iron.
When Betelgeuse becomes a supernova, it will outshine everything in the night sky including our moon, that will be an amazing sight. It probably has exploded already, since light takes so long to reach us!
well then for the other Spam comments, heloooo Betelgeuse is going to become a super nova if u don't Know! ¬¬ and he haven't said 'Betelgeuse is the size of our solar system!!' is thousand times bigger than this!
I've loved the video, it seems pretty sad lookin that a supergiant like that is going to die soon! T_T
The largest known star (VY Canis Majoris), if our sun were to be replaced by it, would only extend to the orbit of Saturn. And though very large, Betelgeuse is dwarfed in size by Canis Majoris.
I seen the history channell talk about this star on the show called the universe. That star is that size because its in its death throws. That star could blow tonight or it could blow 10000 years from now.But it will blow. And when it does an the light from that explosion reaches earth it will be the biggest astronomical site ever in the night sky.Thats from the history channell.
lol? what are you 10? thats idiotic. the sun isnt big enough to go supernova. its gona become a red giant then shrink and fade. the sun wont produce a new star. we beleive another star formed our sun. but the sun wont explode due to its size. its outer layers will fly into space then leaving a white dwarf
That star was at one time the size of earths sun but when stars like ours reaches the end of its life it begins to swell up.They said on the history channell that star could blow tonight or it could blow ten thousand years from now.But evntually it will blow.
i doubt it. stars like our sun consume inner planets then they blow there outer layers into space leaving a white dwarf.wich eventually fades. betelguise was probably about 50 times the size of our sun? possibly bigger. they dont go to extreme sizes. and if u notice the word "super giant" thats bassically red giant for huge stars. our sun will be a red giant. wich is much much smaller.
They were talking about that star on the history channell show called the universe which comes on Tuesday nights 8pm est. They said the reason why that star is big is that it is in its death throws. The star is nearing the end of its life.
VY Canis Majorus compare to it which is bigger?

volume has everything to do wit it: becouse the volume is so extremly big compared to the sun that there are 3 possible explanations:

I'm sorry I meant pop the cork, lol I that first imagery is more vivid though
grimwatcher 2 years ago
the process repeats, except every new nuclear reaction happens faster and faster (silicon, the last element before it reaches iron if I recall correcty, burns in a copuple of seconds!). and then youg et you supernova, any way, Betelgeuse appears to show a 15% decrease in radius, which means it must be contracting, which it's about to poop the cork any time soon
grimwatcher 2 years ago
there's actually some proof that betelgeuse is going supernova any second now. See when a star that big runs ou of hydrogen , it will start to contract, without the thermonuclear fusion it contracts, pressing on the remaining helium inside intil it reaches the temperature necessary to start the fusion of helium into carbon. That's the point at which Betelgeuse is now.

I thought VY Canis Majoris is the biggest one
1DRAgoooN 2 years ago 2
VY Canis Majoris is the biggest star known to mankind,
but remember, in this video it doesn't say Betelgeuse is the biggest one.
plus, this video is from 2008,
as far as i remember, Canis Majoris was discovered in 2009.
Vexoro 2 years ago
No, I watched a video last year with Canis Majoris in it.
1DRAgoooN 2 years ago 2
@1DRAgoooN No, Betelgeuse has 950 100 000 km across vs 2 800 000 000 for vy canis majoris!
jeffrey200800 1 year ago
No, some people made a video of Planet and Stars size in 2008 and included VY Canis Majoris -.-

on its last fuel its burning hellium which causes it to strink and to be very unstabie
quakize 2 years ago
¿Hellium? I think that Betelgeuse now is burning carbon in its core, and hellium in a layer around the core. Fos this reason, this star may explode in some point of next 1000-10000 years. It will happen when its core gets full of iron.
Luisda1984 2 years ago
I wonder how big it explodes, and how massive the black hole would be...hmm... let me see... super massive

yea, I love that program,

When Betelgeuse becomes a supernova, it will outshine everything in the night sky including our moon, that will be an amazing sight. It probably has exploded already, since light takes so long to reach us!
bombarderoazul 2 years ago 5
The star is shrinking 1% each year so far astronomers reported this today
MartekTheSuperhero 2 years ago
@bombarderoazul i just hope if it squirts it misses us =)(gamma ray burst)
sushanalone 1 year ago
well then for the other Spam comments, heloooo Betelgeuse is going to become a super nova if u don't Know! ¬¬ and he haven't said 'Betelgeuse is the size of our solar system!!' is thousand times bigger than this!
I've loved the video, it seems pretty sad lookin that a supergiant like that is going to die soon! T_T

We can fit 7 quadrillion earths into VY canis majoris!!
kindness4 2 years ago
This star is said to be the size of out solar system.
gordonfan190 2 years ago
Um...wrong.
The largest known star (VY Canis Majoris), if our sun were to be replaced by it, would only extend to the orbit of Saturn. And though very large, Betelgeuse is dwarfed in size by Canis Majoris.
CATMARK1 2 years ago 4
Sorry. I meant in diameter, not size. That is correct.
gordonfan190 2 years ago 5
Eh, didn't mean to come off as an ass. Sorry about that.

Lachy314 2 years ago
actually not all stars explode and the sun isnt going to go supernova because it isnt massive enough
phred03 3 years ago
the sun is a star and all stars explode
which means that earth will be destroyed due to the super nova of the sun, that could happen in billions of years and then the cycle will begin again
teenurban 3 years ago
lol? what are you 10? thats idiotic. the sun isnt big enough to go supernova. its gona become a red giant then shrink and fade. the sun wont produce a new star. we beleive another star formed our sun. but the sun wont explode due to its size. its outer layers will fly into space then leaving a white dwarf
dahunterfromrune 2 years ago
That star was at one time the size of earths sun but when stars like ours reaches the end of its life it begins to swell up.They said on the history channell that star could blow tonight or it could blow ten thousand years from now.But evntually it will blow.
discovery2245 3 years ago
i doubt it. stars like our sun consume inner planets then they blow there outer layers into space leaving a white dwarf.wich eventually fades. betelguise was probably about 50 times the size of our sun? possibly bigger. they dont go to extreme sizes. and if u notice the word "super giant" thats bassically red giant for huge stars. our sun will be a red giant. wich is much much smaller.
dahunterfromrune 2 years ago
They were talking about that star on the history channell show called the universe which comes on Tuesday nights 8pm est. They said the reason why that star is big is that it is in its death throws. The star is nearing the end of its life.
discovery2245 3 years ago
According to new measurements, Its bigger than previously thought, about 950-1000 times the radius of the SUN
