  • I bought my first pipe off of ebay and it was a Mastercraft too! Its a nice little dublin made in 1976. It actually arrived today hah. It has some fills and needs a little alcohol treatment. I bought a Jarl from the same dealer and the bowl has quite the stink. It's not too bad but it's gonna need some tlc and time to get it smelling/tasting a little better. I don't want to go as far as a salt treatment but hopefully a few passes with an alcohol covered cleaner will help.

  • I am getting very close to buying my first pipe; however, the thing that is worrying me is whether I should get an estate pipe or not. I realize that I could get a very high quality pipe for less money but what about the cake already built up in the bowl? I have a few aromatics that I want to try, no eng. or virg. yet. I might not want to taste that in my pipe. What should I do?

  • @TheSheph3rds I'd recommend a new pipe if you can afford one. Please watch the rest of these video for more info in what to buy.

  • My first 3 pipes were all estate pipes, one a meer and one a briar from 1955. All it took was some cleaning and they smoked better than new and I never paid over $15 for any one of them. They are all beautiful, great smoking pipes that I never could ahev afforded brand new. Yes you will have to do your research and maybe some minor home repars occasionally, but estate pipes are totally worth it!

  • Hey dude, I'm only 13. I've picked up a bad habit of smoking cigarettes. Each day. I probably smoke up to 2-4 cigs. My old man smokes up to a half pack. I'm starting to get worried at my dad. And I feel like a hypocrit saying don't smoke. But i wanted your opinion. I want to stop smoking and pick up the hobby of cigar smoking. When should I start. And what should I get?

  • @tylerf13ful I can't advocate a 13 year-old smoking at all, but generally speaking, I have smoked cigarettes, cigars and pipes and pipes are the way to do it, if one is going to do it. As I just mentioned, due to your age, I reccommend not smoking at all because it is illegal for you to purchase tobacco and illegal for anyone to sell it to you.

  • What's the oldest pipe you own? I see in the video you refer to 1950's being very well aged briar, am wondering how you would feel about the 2 pipes I have from the 1920's lol

  • I love your videos, but your volume is pretty low. I do like the fact that you're calming telling us things, I don't want you yelling at us now.

  • Another great video Kel!! I've been buying a bunch of estate pipes lately on Ebay and have found they're usually my best smokers. I think the best vendor for estate pipes on Ebay seems to be "Great Estate Pipes". Check them out! They do a great service and also they clean the estate pipes themselves so that it's ready for smoking when you open the box!! Hope that helps! :)

  • @sfk1066 He is good, I've bought from him in the past.

  • This has been a great series~ I really have enjoyed every video!

    Cheers

  • @NorthGeorgiaPipe Thank you Ruben, I hope you're feeling better my Friend.

    Cheers,

    Kel

  • Estates are definitely great starter pipes!

  • Kel - Good advice and helpful recommendation for new pipe smokers not wanting to invest too much in getting started. Seems like most people think about Estate pipes as an affordable way to find that elusive pipe to add to their growing collection, but like you said there are some killer bargains on mid-grade pipes for first-smokes too. Best, Gary

  • Hi Kel, I like how you have your pipes and gear arranged on the table. Nice alternative to a pipe rack, and in many ways, shows off the pipes better.

    Take care,

    Ed

  • @pokiebaron I like to have them close to me where I can look at them. It makes me feel good.

    Cheers,

    Kel

  • That was a great deal, Kel! I have a couple of estate pipes that I paid less than $15 for from Ebay.....nothing to brag about, but decent pipes just the same.
