@fungabunga No, you would just have to pay for it to be recovered by pros. They can recover even physically burnt disk that have been partially melted. The only way to totally get rid of information on a disk is to use a program to do so, there are a few out there that are really good at doing what they are designed to do, but still its like wearing a condom. Best way would be to put in a forge, get it to working temp and bang the shit out of it with a hammer.

if you do that to a hard drive, it wont work anymore, because you are killing the cluster inside the disk, that's the reason the hard drive is well protected in a hard shield, even dust can damage a hard drive. don't do this unless is for fun, and make sure you won't be needing that hard drive anymore.

The format command just wipes (erases) the disk and partially re-magnetizes the surface (the platter you see in the video). A low-level format is much deeper. It re-organizes the physical sectors, in order to do the conventional format later.

Both procedures DO NOT include opening the case of a hard disk. If you open it, it's 95% sure that the disk will be damaged. Even a single particle of dust may render the disk unusable!
