@danniellelockabyy You don't eat the seeds. Technically you can but they are very hard and I wouldn't recommend it. The meat (red fleshy part inside) is what you eat. Thanks for watching.
I liked it. This guy is the only one who came even close to telling me what the hispanic guy at the produce market (just another customer) told me about peeling them. He also said, basically, just eat the seeds, don't chew them!. :)
I ended up with these a few years ago ...they were 5 for a dollar. I cut it open and found seeds everywhere and although it tasted really good ....the seeds were annoying. So here is what i did after peeling them. I smashed them down flat with a potato masher on a cutting board. picked out the seeds and added the pulp to various fruit salads.
@stairway2danielle Yeah the seeds can be a pain and dangerous to your teeth. The fruit as a whole is kind of a pain to deal with which makes it not worth it unless you really like the flavor or have never had one. Typically the way you used it is a good way to go, to accent other desserts. Thanks for your feedback and info about how you used a cactus pear and thanks for watching!
@xPIVOTxMANx yeah unfortunately there are many seeds to navigate and you have to be careful because they are very hard. They can do some damage to your teeth if not worse.
If I remember correctly the fruit that I cut open on this episode was actually the green one and as you can see it has a really nice red texture to the meat. If the red is sweeter its hard to tell the difference. Red however is mostly what you'll find in the store. Thanks for watching!
yeah its not unheard of for it to be yellowish green inside or perhaps it was not very ripe. I've only had a little experience with the other varieties because you don't see them much. If you see Andy Boy brand at your market those are a good choice. Usually will ripen well and be free from thorns because they clean them.
I raise these plants commercially. I'd recommend not using leather gloves at all as the spines will go through the leather. Any rag used to hold it will have spines in it that will be left everywhere you use that rag in the future.
For harvesting we use VERY thick rubber gloves that you get from Industrial and Ag Safety stores... used usually for chemicals.
The best way is to only hold them with tongs, or a fork stabbed into it.
RVO is correct... Andy Boy brand is a cleaned fruit.
Awesome, my dad used to use a stiff paintbrush for the hard-2-see spines. then leather gloves for the big ones! We've been trying to do this for years, thanks for the video <333
this episode looked like a lot of fun to produce, minus the cactus spines. :) I know I was adventurous with the Kiwano melon but I think I'll leave the Cacti on the shelves for now, at least until I invest in some cowhide gloves!
It was a fun episode. This is another adventurous fruit and you already get big congrats for going out there and trying the Kiwano. As you can see from the video you DO need something to hold the cactus fruit with when you eventually try this one. If you see some in the store that are from a brand called Andy Boy those are supposed to be spine free, they remove them supposedly. So you might want to try one when you see that brand. Thanks again for commenting and watching the show!
do you eat the seeds or what?
