Don't hate the skinny girls okay... There's nothing wrong with a girl for being thin and a guy for liking her that way. And we can't help the small boob thing
Are you serious? She's not even fat. She's a decent sized realistic woman. Fat would be someone like Rosie O'Donnell. Women in the Regency era were around Harriet's size and men back then preferred women that way. Real men these days also prefer women of that size. Only boys and guys who want to impress the Facebook generation like skinny girls with no figure and small chests.
So I guess marrying a woman for her 20 thousand pounds is rational. Men of sense in that time wanted money, silly wife or not. Love rarely came into the equation.
I love the music that starts with Emma's offer of having tea! It makes me smile in anticipation of some more high words. And when Mr. Knightley walks away the music just hits the point.
Naturally Mr Knightly is in the right when he proves beyond any argument that men are substantially more prudent in their reasoning, more better sense in matters of the heart, more comprehensible in love than the women are in these matters.
I'm so glad Miss Austin understood that.
No love in this world, than a mans love for a woman.
@Tharuds ...Really? How extraordinary...But surely you must allow that men show more ratiocination, benevolence and adoration for you women than you do for us, you must allow that at least. It's always been that way, i thought.
@bengusandlex As a woman who's been married for almost 9 years. I agree. My husband loves me a million times better than I could love him. A man's love, once he's TRULY in love... is an amazing unstoppable thing.
@19852943 I'm sick to the back teeth of women acting like you're the only sex capable of knowing more about affairs of the heart than men, you dont. And a lot of men are more generous to their women than they are with themselves. And i dont know what kind of men you've ever met, but i know and have heard of many who are not afraid of showing their love and devotion to their women, such a shame we get such a bad press because of the bad ones that are out there, well that go's for both sexes.
woah! hey don't be so angry!I had just given my opinion...never tried to assert it as the right one!and i never claim to have more knowledge about such affairs, no one can, because every single individual has his or her own experience.....it may be good for one, bad for other
the fights between Emma and Knightley are better in the 2009 version. Romola is better as Emma, but Jeremy Northam is pretty good as Knightley. I still like the 2009 version so much better! it is funnier!
@rbain007 I liked the BBC version too and Romola Gari and Johnny Lee Miller were really good, but for me Gwneth Paltrow and Jermey Northam are the ultimate Emma and Knightley.
@EverlastingxHope ... Oh I agree with you so much... Romola and Johnny are wonderful as Emma and Knightley... Their battles are fantastic to watch and they enjoy the sparing... Definitely my favourite version , but I still enjoy watching all the versions, just to see what different actors bring out in the charactures they play... Well written Miss Austen and well acted Gwyneth and Mark... :0)x
Die hard austen fan, but I dislike the casting, excepting Emma. Knightly wrong, Elton wrong, his wife wrong (I love her still, tho!), Harriest allll wrong (even tho Toni is an exceptional actress). But, regardless, I own and pour over all the movies continually. :)
@hank5168 ... Have you seen the 2009 version with Romola Garia and Johnny Lee Miller... Oh my gosh it is truly fantastic... I like all the versions of Emma, but now I must say that the 2009 is top of my particular list.. :0)x
@annewithe79 They're all on here, but I personally hated the Kate Beckinsale version (1996 BBC)...they left out so many of my favorite parts and I never warmed to Beckinsale as Emma. Some people hated the 2009 BBC version, but I liked it quite a bit and Jonny Lee Miller is now tied with Jeremy Northam for my favorite Knightley. :) If you have 3 hours to spare, watch the 2009 BBC one and don't bother with the 1996 BBC one.
@annewithe79 I have, I haven't watched it yet though as it was a birthday present from three days ago. I can try to post it eventually though. If I can get my ripper to work.
I preferred this Emma over the PBS MP version, I found their Emma to be silly and not elegant as GP is, plus I prefer Knightly in this one and wait until the proposal scene in this one, it blows the BBC version out of the water IMHO
This WAs a favorite of mine but...just recently i watched the new BBC mini series...which will be airing on our PBs very soon. The new Emma blows this one away. It has a new spirit to it...and much more light hearted.
Whichever one you prefer, I think the Paltrow version is easily the most light-hearted "Emma." Just take this scene with Emma and "Knightley" (to use a vulgarism worthy of Mrs. Elton) arguing over Harriet as an example. In this one there's not much emotional wattage, and much humor: "Don't kill my dogs," etc. Both the Beckinsale and Garai versions treat it considerably more dramatically - the new mini ends it with Emma in tears!
So I can't agree that the new one is more light-hearted.
emma is a matchmaker clearly she wants all around her to be happy but little does she realize her own affection...i wish ppl would not compare clueless to JA her theme of emma is one of the most sought out themes in the world!
I 100% agree, first off, J.A is more on love and marriage than hooking up, and Teenage love crap!!! and lust, J.A is a wonderful woman, and her work is amazing and with so much heart, and I am pretty sure, the books that she writes is in fact on her experance in life as well.
Mybe not, but I am pretty sure that her books were more on what she saw in sicoety!! yes she never married but that does not mean that she did not have friends that prob influiced her in her books.
And since when did women shoot with bow and arrow? Whatever the simplistic symbolism in it (it is a shame that we don't see the arrow when he shoots it at the end, because he also ends up wrong), it was not appropriate. And Knightley is still too talkative. He only works with one-liners. It is a shame they did noy get that. And since when does a gentleman silence a lady with 'no more'? Impropriety rules...
Yes, they did the same with Pride & Prejudice too.I didn`t know if I was supposed to cry or laugh at the juvenile, shy boy Mr Darcy in the Kiera Knightley version. Plus the actor struggled with the upper-class accent-so did Kiera..Haha!Tortured my ears.Same here, you should watch the best version of Emma with Kate Beckinsale in it. She is perfect, utterly adorable with the impeccable accent of a lady from that era.
Emma from the beginning of the book and movie slightly annoys me with her controlling manner of miss. smith but when she sees her wrong i like her so much more!!
I actually think that Emma is sort of a satire upon how society was run at that time. I have yet to finish the book, but from what i can gather, Emma is a complete snob and Jane Austen made her so to sort of communicate that she is the sort of woman in that day that WOULD succeed in life and make a happy marriage.
I dont think she was a complete snob, otherwise she wouldn't claim an acquaintance with harriet in the first place.
I think Jane Austen was showing the restictions imposed on women at the time. Emma's main employment is matchmaking, and the fact that harriet is the only friend she has who is her own age implies she does this because she is bored, and before meeting harriet, quite lonely.
We can't just call Emma a snob and leave it at that. Yes, she's snobbish and self-absorbed, but she's also intelligent and witty and caring, and she has a great independent spirit. Most importantly, she learns from her mistakes. She's complex.
Yeah, I watched this right after finishing the book and I couldn't see what everyone was complaining about. I think she is spot on. But eh, you can't please everyone I suppose. :D
I'm so glad you said that! I was afraid I was the only one who loved Emma from the start. Yes, she does some things that aren't so smart, but she was acting on good intentions for a friend.
So true, she did what she thought was best for all parties involved... even though it might not have been the best in reality. What matters is that she had the heart to follow what she believed in was right for her friend and to hell with all the rest who thought differently.
I like the book, but I don't like Emma either. It seems that if she doesn't get her way she gets upset. And everyone else besides her is always wrong in her mind. She's spoil,stuck-up, and noisy.
I just realized that Cher from Clueless is the modern day version of Emma. It is exactly the same how Cher tries to set Ty up witih a guy she has no interest in, when really she belongs with the guy she actually likes.
The problem with this adaptation is that we clearly see that Mr Elton is in love with Emma, whereas in the book it was a surprise when Emma learned that mr Elton didn't love Harriet.
I love that line "Emma... you WROTE her answer, didn't you?", haha, it makes me laugh every time. Also when he says "try not to kill my dogs". It's funny how he scolds her for practically everything she does but he still loves her for who she is. I don't think Emma is as bad as she is made out to be, for she is just trying to make others happy through good matches. She has good intentions at least, and a good heart, she just comes off as a bit tricksy and conniving.
Lol I love the way he says "...Emma" at 2:45. Mr. Knightley is good for Emma. He's not patronizing--just tries to talk sense into her.
Lol: "Oh...didn't ask me to contribute a riddle." I LOVE this Mr. Knightley. His lines are...embellished compared to those of Mark Strong's in the other "Emma" but he's so endearing anyway.
And Emma is meant to be controversial. Jane Austen wrote something along the lines of she herself being the only person who would like Emma's character.
Don't hate the skinny girls okay... There's nothing wrong with a girl for being thin and a guy for liking her that way. And we can't help the small boob thing

like cher is emma and she plays matchmaker to her not so classy friend tai who is sort of like Harriet

Tai eventually starts liking her ex-stepbrother, Josh, and that makes cher realize her feelings for Josh who is like knightly. See similarities?

Others may think that Emma is awful but I love her character to bits because she is the most flawed but she learns in the end.

I'm so glad you said that! I was afraid I was the only one who loved Emma from the start. Yes, she does some things that aren't so smart, but she was acting on good intentions for a friend.
lilysama 2 years ago 2
So true, she did what she thought was best for all parties involved... even though it might not have been the best in reality. What matters is that she had the heart to follow what she believed in was right for her friend and to hell with all the rest who thought differently.

I find Emma quiet interesting I dont know why!

I think we all have a little bit of emma in us. I act spoilt, selfish and naive at times. Jane Austen is a genius!

Mr Knightley mmm xD

the exchange between mr. knightley & emma while they're doing archery is one of my favorite scenes of all time, in any movie.

Gwyneth Paltrow has lovely voice ^^

Apparently Jane Austen said that no one would ever like Emma except her.
which is quite true XD
and i dont usually like Gwyneth Paltrow, but from what I've seen of this so far, she plays emma very well.

*I* like Emma; she's less vapid in the book, necessarily.
festeringpeace 2 years ago
yes there are tons of similarities, like Cher taking care of her dad and how she ends up dating her stepbrother who is basically Mr. Knightley.

The girl from clueless annoyed me a LOT more than emma
superliz27 2 years ago
In the movie, they make Emma much more charitable than she is in the book, as she is so VAIN and full of herself!

I dislike Emma the character with a passion. It is the only Austen heroine I am not a fan of. Yeck. She is just ridiculous.
blackbird12790 2 years ago 2
I like the book, but I don't like Emma either. It seems that if she doesn't get her way she gets upset. And everyone else besides her is always wrong in her mind. She's spoil,stuck-up, and noisy.

I meant nosy.

I just realized that Cher from Clueless is the modern day version of Emma. It is exactly the same how Cher tries to set Ty up witih a guy she has no interest in, when really she belongs with the guy she actually likes.

Your entirely personality is a Riddle Mrs. Knightley, i thouhgt you will be overquialified xD

kikimorka16 3 years ago 13
Do you mean that in the novel it was a surprise to us as readers or a surprise to Emma? Because in this she is surprised.
kwexy 3 years ago 2
The problem with this adaptation is that we clearly see that Mr Elton is in love with Emma, whereas in the book it was a surprise when Emma learned that mr Elton didn't love Harriet.

There is also more scenes between Mr. Knightly and Emma alone.

She has good intentions at least, and a good heart, she just comes off as a bit tricksy and conniving.
mywittyusernamehere 3 years ago 20
Lol I love the way he says "...Emma" at 2:45. Mr. Knightley is good for Emma. He's not patronizing--just tries to talk sense into her.
Lol: "Oh...didn't ask me to contribute a riddle." I LOVE this Mr. Knightley. His lines are...embellished compared to those of Mark Strong's in the other "Emma" but he's so endearing anyway.
And Emma is meant to be controversial. Jane Austen wrote something along the lines of she herself being the only person who would like Emma's character.
