I just saw this on the National Geographic Moray special.  I turned it on and this was one of the first things that happened, took me by surprise. The kind of surgery they can do these days is amazing though, thanks for the upload.

Feeding a moray is dangerous. The problem is Moray Eels have bad eyesight. He most likely did not intend to bite the thumb, but when you hand feed them, they have a problem distinguishing between the food and the hand.

This kind of practice is what leads to other divers being attacked when they are not feeding eels. Im sure you learned your lesson here, glad you got some use out of your toe for your thumb. A school teacher was attacked, ripped his arm up, he cant even use his hand right anymore, this came from other divers feeding the eel. The Eel actually left the coral, came up to the divers and ripped this guys arm up.

That sucks man but it looks like they did a good job on the operation. Guess the moray just didnt distinguish from the hotdogs. Good thing you kept your resp. on when it bit you, last thing you needed would've been to gulp in a lungfull of water...just be glad you're still ok.

Eels would be harmless if they didn't have that second set of jaws which acts like a harpoon. I feel so bad that you went through this.

Well, if you're ever going to do that, my advice to you is to wear steel all over you. Especially steel gloves. They work. Trust me. I've seen people use it all the time. It saves limbs.
