rat trap by the Boomtown Rats comes to mind - which came first?
Just came across this because my brothers(scottish) band from the 70s - the Androids also had a song titled Out on the Street - - it's on youtube and makes an interesting comparison between scottish and NZ absorption of current themes
The 70's produced some great bands from across the Tasman, its a shame there is no videos on YouTube of undoubtably one of the best Kiwi bands of the time Ragnarok.
THIS SONG WAS A WELL DONE 1 HIT WONDER BUT I REALLY LIKED IT COMING OUT OF NZ. I REMEMBER IT BEING SHOT DOWN IN ONE OF THE TALENT SHOWS OF THE DAY BY INIA TEWIATA, WHO WAS A TENOR I THINK, AS 1 OF THE JUDGES. HE COMPARED IT TOO MUCH LIKE DAVID BOWIE, BULLSHIT, TOO WAY OUT FOR HIS AGE GROUP. LUCKILY THESE OLDIES DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO SHOOT DOWN SPLIT ENZ, SO THERE.
@MOORECRES22 I recall Split Enz were on New Faces in 1973, however they got second last in the finals. The one judge on the panel who liked Split Enz though was Ray Colombus. Colombus later helped the Enz by organizing for them a NZ $5000 lifeline when they were down on the luck somewhat in the UK in the late 1970s, before "Frenzy" was released...
Great song, great band. 'Shame Riddell was crap after this!
I remember well how this song was tragically knocked from it's number one position in the 1974 New Zealand charts by 'Kung Fu Fighting' by Carl Douglas.
He's Alistair Riddell and if you can't tell the female look he has is both deliberate and exaggerated, and yes it shocked a few people over here. Though Bowie got there first and was obviously a key influence.
OMFG....never thought I'd see this again, my friends and I thought this was the best song we'd ever heard at the time...we finally had our answer to Bowie and the whole glam thing happening in the UK, thanks for this!
I met (first time) and spoke to Alastair Riddell 2 days ago at the Auckland Fourmyula get-together. Very friendly and great to talk to. I found out that he grew up just around the corner from where I lived. (Kelston, Auckland)
I can't seem to find the video of this version of Out On The Street spliced with the version of the song recorded a few years back for some Kiwi TV show.. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Come to think of it, backing Riddell in this was keyboardist Eddie Rayner (the next band he joined was of course Split Enz) and the non-Chunn members of Citizen Band...
As for Riddell, he nearly joined Split Enz when Phil Judd quit in 1977 - he said no, so Tim Finn's younger brother joined instead.
There was also an original black & white shot of this song which was the promo-vid, but I dunno what happened to that one. I saw a short of it on a Coca-Cola music weekend some 20 years ago, along with a host of other NZ artist vids from the last 45 years or so, but this colour vid looks pretty good, although quite rare I'd say. I wonder what Alastair Riddell's up to these days anyway?.....
Given that NZ didn't officially go colour until 1975 I would say this would be unusual. The Commonwealth Games in Christchurch in January & February 1974 was a mixture with some events in colour and some in b&w to TVNZ had a certain amount of colour camera's available.
Colour transmission in NZ officially began in October 1973, though it wasn't until 1975 that everything was colour as they were having to phase out the old equipment first!
I have this track on CD, listen to it endlessly. Great track for having a beer with. Had a bit of a chuckle watching this, as the lip synic is a bit of a hit and miss affair, but I guess he had a couple of Brews before he went on....lol. Wonderful to see this rare footage. Thanks Puhoi, it was a real treat.
Love this song, Allister was so out there, still have the album on vinyl and play it regulary, great to see the video , takes me back to New Faces and the controvercy at the time of how a gay looking out there Bowie look alike could win a national talent show.
lol.. we had some bloody good times at the Auck uni gigs,,, last one I went to was about 15 years ago (about 1990)..one of the legalise marajauna gigs... there was a bloke at the door with a battery powered "shot gun".. you paid your entry fee and were given big fill up of thc before we went in.. totally great times. oh and for the record.. of course I never inhaled.
New Zealand stinks!!!! Especially for Sharon Dawn Johnson (Neil Finn's wife and some rich people that I want to cut their dicks off.

@scotrelf This predates the Boomtown Rats by many years, this was a NZ hit for Space Waltz in 1974.

Ah, the 70's...When no-one was afraid to be different and no-one had a sense of entitlement towards music or gave 2 shits what you looked like.

The song contest judges of that period were just stuck up,arrogant and pretentious. They talked some dribble!!
