  • makes me think of deus ex 3

  • but can it read ?

  • where's the door and inside?

  • why is this under news and politics

  • only for the upper hobo class

  • i prefer a tent.

  • I have one of these for when I play DND.

  • damn real estate for the homeless what the hell is going on

  • After sealing up all the cracks, I'd love to hotbox that thing. : )

  • uhhh boring

  • But... does it blend?

  • @kipsasXP4EVA xD never get's old.

  • Your university makes cardboard domes for projects? Wow!! You suck. Why don´t you get your students out on the field and make a real dome you tied ass mothers?

  • I'd like to say it's shit but really difficult, but it doesn't even look that difficult. :<

  • a green-house for the home-less XD

  • a green house for the home-less XD

  • houses for the homeless

  • @SpiRalsickness We have a stronger dome for homeless that you can see at our Elitevipservices site. Thanks! Hugh

  • I had this as a toy when I was a child. Almost exactly that size, the triangle cards each had a hole in the center, a couple had a hole large enough to act as a doorway. The triangles had flaps on each side and the playset included plastic clips to hold the whole together. My brother and I would make pyramids and tunnels as well as domes. This would have been in the early to mid 1970's.

  • Better than IKEA :D

  • i never thought id want to live in a cardboard box

  • That's amazing design. How'd you get it to fit so well? Great job!

  • In 1972, the Science Club at Otsego High School manufactured precisely this same dome for a 4-day camp outing. Sealed with masking tape and painted with multiple coats of enamel paint, the dome could not be crushed by 13 students climbing on top of it. 2 more were constructed which lasted 3 years in a remote location in NW Ohio before being detroyed by vandals.

  • can be homeless.

  • now, cover that in fiber glass and it will last a life time in all weather.

  • You bet or Grancrete or Hydro-Stop which are the 2 products that I recommend. They are all green!

  • they make a 1 half inch cementitious tile baker board i wonder if it would hold up to extreme weather conditions.

  • what

  • wow

  • This would have a neat camping aplication if the segments were hinged in some fasion and water proof. Could be used for emergency houseing during natural disasters for temporary shelters.

Has a very interesting potential of uses.

Possible self construction for yard sheds.

  • Yes, we work with Grancrete in North Carolina and you are right it can be scaled up. We also place wood struts inside the dome that are liquid nailed to the cardboard.

    Thanks,

  • @hugh009 And when it rains...? Whats the point of a roof then if it gets soggy

  • awesome

  • Yes, this could even be done by middle school children as all our domes could; however these students VOLUNTEERED their Saturday to build it because they were OPEN minded which seems to be something that you could set a 2009 resolution to be more of and instead of being so critical!

  • if this is university level it is no wonder that we are surpassed by many other countries for education. This is high school project.

  • Ya might want to put an a in here some where "This is high school project.""no wonder that we are surpassed by many other countries for education." Say's the Grammar less idiot,Now don't get mad at me your the one that made yourself look stupid.hehe.........

  • So you guys are going to live in cardboard boxes? HA!-HA!

  • Thanks Hugh; really nice overview. It would be helpful for your to state the purpose of the dome in the beginning (tent), however, so I would have an idea what you're talking about from the start.

  • Excellent! I have one like this - have you considered using corrugated plastic, and fastening hinges to the tabs? I'm thinking about building one.

  • Dude! Holy shit! I was watching this video and I was looking at the shop and I thought it looked like the construction management shop at my school and then I heard the narrator say Western Carolina Uni. I am a engineering student at WCU. Didn't see that one coming.

  • Very nice. I made a smaller version out of index cards. I use regular paper staples for fasteners. Can you tell us what you used for fasteners on the inside seams?

  • Yes it was fastened with nuts and bolts.

  • cool.well done.

i want to make one from pentagons/hexagons.

    out of MDF.

what would the angle of the cut be ?

    thanx

  • Great News now there is the U-Dome it is a 16ft X 12ft tall dome it costs l,450 dollars and is now available to anyone. It contains 200 sq ft and can be fitted with composting toilets, solar generators etc. Check it out by WorldShelters-org

  • Thanks, Greg! I will check it out.

  • If you check out their entry into the Buckminster Fuller Challenge you will see listed a project in Kingston, Jamaica. That is my plan to use their domes to generate unlimited electricity by first turning feces into methane gas then powering a flywheel generator. From what I know of Meta-physics this will continue to produce more and more electricity as time goes on.

  • 12 x 6 ft sad

wisconsin habitat humanity project has had one over 15 x 9 for the last 3 years

  • We will be setting a project to build the next one in the range of 30-36 feet. Stay tuned.
