As much as I love South Pacific and think it's great that older shows can still be successful, this should have won. I think it should have won Best Actor, Lighting, and Revival. Maybe Paulo is amazing if you see the entire show, but he's really boring to watch while singing. You don't have to look deadpan to sing classically! Daniel on the other hand gives so much. They both do in this clip. Pretty won out over beautiful I guess. "Pretty isn't beautiful, mother, pretty is what changes."
i agree. it was stolen. we did this last year at my university (i played jules/greenberg) and the actf respondent came from THIS production the night before and said he absolutely LOVED and was astounded by our production. we were very honored by that. it meant alot to us, since our school is a private christian school with a relatively unknown theatre department.
Haha...that happened at our little Christian school too with a production of Spitfire Grill. I think it was ACTF...I don't know since I wasn't in it or involved. They loved us though!
Sondheim is the best composer Broadway has ever seen, and yet he is SO humble. There wasn't ANY boasting in that speech at all (Good ol' Mandy and his beard).
You knew SOUTH PACIFIC was gonna win when it got best LIGHTING, even tho SITPWG revolutionized what light can do on a stage. Unfortunatly the Tonys always go the extra mile for Rodgers and Hammerstein.
If he's worried about the finality of a lifetime achievement award, he could write a musical adaptation of the life of Karl Marx for Mandy Patinkin's beard.
I would love to see Daniel Evans with Bernadette Peters- would that be a dream pair or what! (In the ages they are in their respective versions that is).
I just can't keep my eyes off of him in this clip- such incredible presence.
Took damn long enough for Sondheim to be recognized. This show REALLY deserved the revival Tony, and it's just depressing that the show has twice failed to one anything. Grr.
Beautiful words from Mr. Sondheim. He is the most wonderful & gracious composer and I love his work. It's all thrilling & excellent.

This revival was more about the sensational visuals than the true heart of the show. I just didn't feel it like I did when watching the OBC version.

This work is SO not "christian". Experience the horrid depths of that wicked shallow belief system like I did. Christians suck.

does anyone get the feeling that sondheim was insulted by the award or is that just me?

You can't compare the work of Sondheim and ALW at all. Sondheim is so far beyond him...

The only adversary worthy of Chuck Norris is Mandy Patinkin's beard.

What took them so long to give this to Steve?
I'd think, by now, he deserves about two or three.

Mandy's beard stills torrents and wells fear in the hearts of men.

Daniel Evans was outstanding. I don't think anybody will be able to perform Dot better than Bernadette Peters, though.

I love stephen's speech. He basically declined it while being a good sport about it in accepting it.

Sunday should've won for best revival. It won nothing when it first came out, and it won nothing this year either. Makes me angry.
also, Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell are spectacular.
