It's a difficult position the president is in. Most people already know that Fox news is an arm of the Republican party, yet they themselves still claim to be fair and balanced. They claim whatever they want and call it news and all the other news organizations just laugh it off and don't challenge it. It might have been a good thing for the White House to put it on the record, but i wouldn't go much further than that.

where Obama is on the political spectrum depends on where you sit. if you are on the left he is certainly to the right because he isn't doing exclusively leftist things, if you are on the right he is to the left because he isn't doing exclusively right things, and if you are in the centre, he pleases you sometimes and pisses you off others. It doesn't matter where he is, what matters is the reality that this happens to everyone the americans elect as president.

Obama maybe the most left friendly president, but he has more conservative credentials than Carter (not that this is hard since most people have more conservative in them than Carter). Its very hard when perspective colours ones judgement of an event. Objectively Obama is centre left albeit further left than any other.

but in this matter perception is everything, appealing to objectivity in a country like the USA where no news sources are objective is like asking art students to calculate pi. objectivity escapes their entire culture. everyone sees their point of view and few entertain other ones enough to form decisions. subjective assesments are the only ones ANYONE left or right can handle in America. and they aren't wrong because from their perspectives they call em how they see em.

left or right worldviews come with certain beliefs about how best to do things and accomplish goals. these are very hard for them to overcome to make objective assesments. Objectively George W Bush wasn't a neo con or even a staunch conservative, he was centre right but to someone who is on the left that sounds ridiculous because of their perspective, they can't overcome their viewpoint long enough to rationally make such a judgement.
