  • such a sad end to a beautiful old lady, ok she may have rolled somewhat but she was home

  • As a kid I had a Hippo book on British Warships where Fearless and Intrepid were shown then merely as artist impressions. We're getting too old!

  • Our navy is a joke.

  • I visited Pompey recently and all I can say is that it has become a large shopping centre. Anyone can walk into the dockyard (so much for security). took a trip round the harbour and saw 8 warships 7 of which are waiting to be scrapped or sold. Still if we need to go to war we can use Warrior.and Victory.

  • @Eastaxe I'm willing to bet the only reason they haven't scrapped Victory yet, is because they're confused at how to scrap wood.

  • as fond as i am of bulwark and albion, i do not care much for the names, somehow fearless and intrepid are more inspiring, i think they were both more attractive ships too.

  • I remember as a Sapper in 1963 when we did a mockbattle landing on the Inverness beaches. It was her maiden voyage. I was on nightwatch on the stern from 01.00-o3.oo hrs,,brrrrr--freezing cold...Then we went into active service in Aden 1964 and Fearless followed us later..Beautiful ship. i will always remember her...

  • Sad sad day, I went on HMS Fearless in 1978 (I was 8!) great day and a great ship. I later served in the RN but never got drafted to HMS Fearless shame.

  • Sad day. Served on them both and have many happy memories. They brought true meaning to 'work hard, play hard.'

  • Actualy got some pics of her in drydock in feb '06 when i was in Nelson prior to leaving the mob, must of been stripping her then. Shame, real shame. felt the same when the Britania was being done a few years before.

  • Sad day, never was on the fearless, but was on the intrepid twice 84-87 then 87 to 89, they were falling to bits but as a Mem(L) that was half the fun trying to keep it going! They rolled like a pig in bad weather, but you got used to it. Would love to have had a look around before they went, especially my old messes, 4F1 and 4L2.

  • I was an MEM(L) in 84 - 85 in 4F2 Mess (handy for the heads in the middle of the night, but not the smell!) She was falling apart a bit and used to roll and shake esp at full speed (about 22 knots). Running into a German Oil Tanker in the fog didnt help any, but it did give us a few weeks in Cyprus! Loved serving on her -so much better than the Diomede.

  • Right there with crepdems. Was on this fantastic vessel in 1995.. Regular servings of haggis made the experience less enjoyable (well, it is Scottish, right?) - but January 25th 1995 was a memorable day. RIP Fearless..

  • Served on this beauty for a couple of days in '94. Aside from the shit food, it was alright.

  • The Fearless was a great command ship in it's day, the Falklands conflict really putting her through her paces. I was on the ship in 1984 and enjoyed the experience when I was in the army.

  • served onboard Fearless as part of DTS 74-76 good runs ashore med,. caracas .west indies.

  • Hey, _ _ _ hole, what does "numourse" mean?

Also, it should read "would HAVE been" and not "would OF been".

Just 2 of several mistakes in your post. Guess you are exactly the right sort of person to know about retards. LG.

  • In the US a ship like this would have been saved and turned into an attraction. Pity that in the UK the authorities don't give a shit about our naval heritage.

There isn't a single old warship preserved in Plymouth, a city synonimous with the RN.

  • What like the Mary Rose? Or the other numourse ships displayed on the Thames, or Portsmouth!!A ship like this in The US would of Been melted down and turned in to a car/ lawn mowers....infact its such an ignorant retared comment i cant be bothered with it anymore.

  • agreed....yes it's really odd now that you mention it. US even has carriers from pearl harbour days.

  • I know. There are old warships, inc a carrier at NY, there are ww2 era ships at SF, there is a huge museum about 60 miles S of Boston. US cities practically fight over those New Jersey class BBs. Over here they simply get sold for scrap. Total waste. Wouldn't you think that the city of Plymouth would be proud to have HMS Plymouth? No. They'd rather waste money on crappy fountains and traffic lights!

  • I was on the Fearless in re-fit 1989, it was a great ship for loafing, plenty of places to hide. :)

  • such a shame she was scrapped, they were the last steam driven ships in the royal navy, they served us well and now they take their place in the esteemed history of the royal navy, lets hope she will not be the last warship to bear the name FEARLESS...

  • yeh they will name it after fearless..

they named ships like invinceble for 200 years so :D

  • Without this ship and her sister-ship nobody lands on the Falklands.

  • i built a model of this once and it was a buetiful ship to

    ill miss u

  • INTERESTING SHIPS,UGLY WITH IT!!

  • I did 3 1/2 years on Intrepid 86-89 and loved every minute.I joined Fearless as COMAW Staff in the 90's for a States deployment and had a great time.Such a shame to the the pair go but lets be honest, they were rusting hulks back then.

  • were they really that bad? I always loved the Fearless

  • Did u know this ship was infested with cockroaches, they thrived on the aspestes within the ship, such a sad ending to a ship that carried out such an important role in the re taking of the Falklands

  • yes the cockroaches also nibbled the spunk in the pillows

  • Shame to see the old girl go, but better than rusting away I suppose.

I served on her in the mid 70's as an 18 year old and had a fantastic couple of years. It was a long time ago!!!

  • My dad was also on that ship, It was his favourite of all ships he served on during his 22 years in the navy he passed away a few years before this and im sure he'd have hated to see it go aswell. But all those storys of the times he spent on that ship that he told me when i was a kid are still with me now.

  • was so sad to see my old ship go for scrap

  • my dad served on the intrepid in the seventies, a real shame this ship has been scrapped

  • Old Ships!

    Comms dept 1992/93

  • I severed on both LPDs and have fond memory's of life on board and ashore probally some of the best runs ashore I had in the mob

  • As the song went in the Bond film she starred in. "Nobody does it better." 'Nuff said. Bravo Zulu L10.

  • A sad day, I joined her as a RO on loan for an exercise in Norway back in March 1985.

  • I think i was on the same exercise, on HMS Intrepid, such a long time ago! I visited my old oppo in Gosport recently and we went to take a look at the two ships together just before they were taken away. I hadnt seen them for 20 years, it was very moving, now its sad to see them go. It gives me proper flashbacks of all the piss ups, good times and bad times we had (like floating round bloody Norway for three weeks).

Id better go before i start crying into my old pussers grip.

    Adios

  • Intrepid was undergoing refit at the time of that exercise, must have been another one.

  • sad to see a great ship going to her grave. provo

  • why begium? hartlepool is where we dismantle ships and keep our great dismantlers in work.

  • sad day to see my first ship in the mob getting scrapped.

  • Have fond memories of this ship even tho i was never in the navy. Was lucky enough 2 go aboard her during her last days of service and joined some members of her crew for a run ashore one sunday nite in Pompey a few years back. Anyone interested life on bourd should look for a book called TOTALLY STEAMING A YEAR ON HMS FEARLESS by Damon Hammond. its really funny
