  • All i know is that mountain Kikks arse Everytime I hear there music it makes me want to step and say . Hope Leslie is well. thanks for the music.

  • I saw mountain w/ Leslie and Felix at the wax museum in DC what a great show, small stage never forget that one till they put pennyies on my eye lids.

  • I first heard Mountain at the age of 12 when I found the 'Mountain Live' album in a dustbin. Of course, Nantucket Sleighride was the theme music for the news program Weekend World at that time so at least I knew one of the tracks already.

  • great version*****

    thx for the upload

  • So raw, please Leslie go back to your raw tone.

  • I lived in San Jose, CA. In the early '90s I viusited Capitola Beach every weekend, bc there was a tiny record Store clsoe to the wharf. The guy sold Lps for $1 each. Ofd course I got all the Mountain, Yardbirds, Scorpions and Ten years After LPs I just wanted in my entire life.

I love the best: Leslie West and the Mountain of course. And this song aalone beats 10 million songs! I love the double-LP relaesed Japanese concert version (34 minutes) of this song.

  • amazing version! i use to listen to this song over and over back in my teens when we had "albums"...damn what a voice! this song is so haunting..i love it still

  • sounds great...

  • @48perkins allsome guitar tommy, whats up cam me

  • anybody see mountain in 74ish at gaelic park, bronx newyork?

  • Saw Mountain in the early 70s in concert in Louisville Ky, They were awesume.Leslie West , one of the best guitarist in the world! Great song!

  • wow.. felix! love mountain. love the wailing.... not fond of whaling. What a cut! this is awesome! Gail would save the whales..... look at her art.... but shedid she have to shoot Felix. ...? i think both got crazy... this is so f'in ' great! WOW!

  • We had a blast at No Fo !

  • @russ5150 This is awesome! I love Mountain, especially the guitar. They were a great band. Leslie West's sound is one-of-a-kind. I love guitar and music of the 1970s, particularly Mountain, Free, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Wishbone Ash. Thanks for this post. I've ordered this cd. Tony from Tasmania.

  • Great sound outta that gibby! I have climbing and nantucket, must be played loud. Says so on one of 'em. Still gettin' yelled at... gergor62

  • master of the extended jam!

hard to believe this is 40+ years old.

think it's time to go dig out the vinyl ;)

  • O f*&^ I never heard something like this before - amazing playing.

  • Einfach Genial!

West is the Best

  • Ritchie Blackmore was into Leslie West and Mountain in the early days. Good taste if you ask me.

  • Einfach ein geiler Song, werde ich nie vergessen die wilden partys damals in den 70 ern und 80 ern. Schöne, warme, anschmiegsame Frauen beim Stehblues-Tanzen. Zeit für ein Revival.

  • I still have my old Flowers of Evil lp. Wonder if it's worth anything.

  • OMGWTF, dis is dope

  • That's the best way to put it~!

  • Took a trip to Nantucket in 1978,

Found the name Schmuck on a mailbox.

Still wonder if that was the home of Felix, Corky or Leslie??????????????

  • Is thid Felix? Can barely hear the bass. When you do, it's got that same distortion that he had at woodstock.

  • EXCELENTE BANDA MOUNTAIN tengo toda la coleccion de esta grandiosa banda.

    SALUDOS DESDE PERU Y VENEZUELA

  • west guitar great total power

  • the guitars out of tune

  • yeah it is a bit flat

  • Anyone know if there's a video of this, or was it just recorded via audio?

  • The LP JUNIOR'S CAME WITH JUST A SINGLE P-90 PICKUP CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.

    THOSE PICKUPS FUCKIN' SCREAM.

    RIP FELIX AND LES PAUL!

    LONG LIVE THE MOUNTAIN!

  • You are correct, however, Leslie jerry-rigged everything. Everything was custom.

..plugged directly into a Sun PA head During Woodstock and on many early Mountain recordings for his completely unique tone.

    Then of course.... his fingers....

  • yep. P90. the holy grail of tone.

and with West's vibrato and an ability to squeeze out every ounce of tone from it...yeah. :D

  • creo que soy el unico español que escucho el temazo este donde estan los de los 70 no te cansaras de escuchar a este fenomeno de la guitarra

  • es buenisimo para amantes de guitarra y

    muy buena la voz

  • The live version on "the road goes ever on" is my favotite song of all time, and the guitar solo is so simle and beautiful, along with the bass soloing along....

  • Agreed. So simple, but the melodic structure is as sweet as anything ever played. How is it that this version has never been posted, especially since it was a live recording in the first place. Cannot believe someone does not have footage from this recording.

  • anyone who is a real musician knows of the great leslie west. If you did not learn some of your guitar playing from his music your not a true guitar player

  • This is a beautiful song and the guitar solo is fantastic!

  • is there a second part to this great clip?

  • this band was one of my favorite three man bands along with grand funk railroad Robin Trower,....

  • Remember this as the theme music to a British current affairs programme ' Weekend World many years ago . Really great to hear it again . Amazing piece of music !!!

  • This is simply brilliant. In every sense of the word. Absolutely brilliant.

  • on the image @ 6:10, was that Jack Bruce playin base with them on that album?

  • Jack, Leslie, and Corkey had a band after mountain split.

  • yep - simply called West, Bruce & Laing

    Good Stuff !!

  • heck yeah it was. I got both there CD's and the live album. =]

  • yea, they had some great songs on "Live N Kicking

    1. Play With Fire 2. Doctor, The 3. Politician 4. Powerhouse Sod

  • i rememeber when i was in high school back in the late 80's and early 90's. all the dude's that talked about who were the best guitar players in rock and roll. they all would mention guys like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, etc etc., but nobody mentioned Leslie West or even Jimi Hendrix.

though i liked Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhodes. i would mention Hendrix and they would turn thier heads and have that puzzled look on thier faces. lol.

  • i would have mentioned Leslie's name too but i didnt even know of Leslie West and barely knew the band Mountain just from thier song "mississippi queen" and i didnt know who the band members were i guess me and everyone else was into the big hair rock bands durring that time. but at least i was fascinated by at least Hendrix from that era of rock.

  • local radio stations suck here. they just play whats on top 40s and as far as the classic rock stations, the only song they ever played by Mountain on the air was "mississippi queen" so that was the extent of my rock knowledge at the time. and my parents never owned an album from Mountain. :\

  • thatz cause they are punks!

  • live at capital theater 1974 thats the album

  • Hi Russ, where can I buy this track,

    thanks

    steve

    ps great stuff

  • Mountain is my all time favorite band,Leslie West is a rock hero, It would be cool to hear from some other Mountain fans.

  • Saw them in Liverpool in 1974 but I fell asleep during the performance !!!!!! Too much Newcastle Brown. I've regretted it ever since!

  • Late getting in - I first saw them at a local community college just outside Atlanta in 71. It was an incredible show. Standing outside the Gym while they were warming up, the building shook to Never in My Life - I was hooked for life. Felix's bass knocked a hole in your chest and Leslie was still playing the Sunn/LP - Jr. I think they were at their best with Steve Knight. Saw WB&L and then the set up in this video plus numerous Leslie/Corky arrangements. Nothing beats '71. Thanks!!

  • I wish i could have been there, i was still 9 years away, lol by the way you describe it i can almost see hear it.

  • @GHeuett....... Dekalb college?

  • @FREDMERZRS Sorry I missed this earlier - Yes - It was Dekalb College Central Campus (now Perimeter). Leslie paddled the guitar and the whole nine yards.

  • @GHeuett Cool.......last time I was there was in 69/70 school year and sat 10 ' stage side from the Almond Bros. Cool times.

  • Felix had an incredible voice!

  • NICE LES PAUL JUNIOR! ! !

  • all I can say about this jam is ...

    Dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

those notes aren't o my guitar !!! lol

  • what was he using around 9:20? sounds like a fiddle bow

  • He just used the tone control

  • Is Felix singing? Sounds like him, what a great voice.

  • Yes, it's Felix Pappalardi who sings. And yes, really great voice. :)

  • It is Felix singing. Leslie was the best too. Don't let this tape fool you though. Listen close to the guitar. This isn't Leslie. Through some modern magic a young guy from Louisiana did the guitar work, trust me, he showed me how he did it. Why he doesn't post some tributes or material of his own I don't know.

  • Nat. Maybe the young dude your talkin about has reasons he hasn't shared with you. If he wanted it known your sayin he might have told everyone. Ya talk too much on utube. Chill out for a while and he might call ya again soon.

  • @Natalie78644 I hope that was a joke!

  • @Natalie78644 now I've heard it all !!!

  • @Natalie78644 Are you sure about that?

  • @Natalie78644 Seriously! You have really good proof a such a wild claim I hope...?

  • This reminds me of my senior year in High School and my first year in College in Virginia...good times...don't ruin my mellow...lol

  • This is such great music. It takes me back in life to such a wonderful era of free styling, love, and just loosing yourself to good music and good times. Live in the moment and treasure such a wonderful gift of Nantucket Sleigh Ride. Shut your eyes and let it take you back in time. Sincerely with Smiles, Tuesday

  • Depper..you exaggerating a tad...don't you think? What is with you anyway...you post like Leslie is god...ptiful...bet you lick his balls when Shea goes to the porn shop to sell a Dean Leslie West guitar for dope money.

  • Right on man.Take a look at my comments to "Depper`s' wild exaggerations to "For Yasguir`s Farm".He FAR overates Mountain-especially Leslie West.

The fat man was a fairly good guitar player-that`s all.And Mountain made NO contribution to blues music."Depper" doesn`t know shit.

  • You're right, thanks for straightening that out! Now I realize the he doesn't know shite!! And that of course would naturally mean that neither did Hendrix.

  • then why are other good guitarists takin lessons from Leslie?

Hendrix was #1 for only one reason, his influencial style, not so much his playing ability. and hendrix wasnt always that good playin live. alot of the ones who made top 100 are overrated anyway.

hell, Joe Walsh didnt make top 100 either and he's highly reguarded.

  • What makes Leslie West great is the fact that he plays rhythm , lead , and he sings in a powr trio. The freaking guy is over 60 yrs old!!! He plays the shit out of the guitar, I saw him recently and even his voice sounds great again. You can't name another musician that can do what he's doing. He is awesome. MOUNTAIN RULES!

  • Wish I could erase this, cause it don't matter, anymore.. Either people are gonna like you or they're not...What's the use of trying to prove yourself all your life. Anyway, regardless, this is a VERY fine song.

  • who posted my song.....

hot tuna/rock me baby 1975 here in youtube

  • oops, second person from the right. I must have picked up his dislexia, too.

  • Depper, Look at the 'Flowers of Evil' cover, 2nd person from the left. No more clues. Ask Leslie.

  • depper, can you be so kind as to get somr Vagrant stuff.

  • Mineshawshimazu, letsallclapourhands. OHyeah, who was that gorgeous sounding masked singer, anyway, Tonto? Sooo...great the whole thing! I'll give them a ten twice over. I say this recording's definite cult classic music at its best. Thanks for shaering.

  • Does it matter, lol, time to move on, better go before you lose out.

  • they had the perfect band name and the sound to go with it. i need to get some CDs of them. especially thier live stuff.

  • Cydonian, whatever CDs you pick up, be absolutely certain to include Flowers of Evil... so you can get Dream Sequence, one of the best if not THE best improv guitar solos ever performed in the Rock n Roll genre... it was the ultimate display of the Les Paul Jr sound... a true masterpiece of improv guitar work of the day. 24 minutes 57 seconds of rock n roll history.

  • The band name was connected to the historical period when this band was popular. The youth culture of the late 1960`s greatly valued ecology and nature. This is why the name "Mountain" was chosen.Alan wilson of Canned Heat-a rare genius-loved nature ever since his boyhood. But, it is true that by the late 60`s nature love was greatly in vogue.

One of Mountain`s greatest songs-a tribute to Jimi Hendrix- was "Tired Angels".Great harmony and fascinating lyrics on "Tired Angels".

  • love this shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I had to return. I am 51 and this brings back excellent memories. Growing up in NJ and having a beer with my buds camping etc.

  • What version is this? Can`t recognize it?

  • it's off the cd "The Encore Collection"

  • OMG I am listening to this exact CD in San Fran. right now. Excellent post russ. !!!

    Cr

  • thanks Hazy, rock on.....

  • Thank`s Buddy, maybe the ONLY Mountain record I don`t have!

  • yw drums....peace

  • I looked a bit deeper in my collection and I FOUND IT!!

  • yep i agree

  • "The Ayatollah of Rock 'n Rolla..." "The best tone in the twilight zone..." Leslie West squeezing so much from such a simple guitar... Corky Laing hitting those drums harder than Ali hit Fraizier in all THREE fights combined... Felix Pappalardi's bass had more fuzz than the greatest of stout beers.. got 6 words for ya: ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. It aint real without the inclusion of the real deal.

  • and so this be the truth brotha.

music has become more about corporate wallets these days.

    rock n roll!
