@sassybeest dunno if its a "hole in the wall" but Knuckleheads is the main Blues venu in KC. Some great performers pass thru, its a good time. A smaller place is BB's Lawnside BBQ which is actually a bbq joint that also has live blues. Happy Travels...
I have watched this many times and on each occasion, floods have tears have poured down my face, so raw is the emotion coming from this genius and his music.
DAMN! I'M KICKING MY ASS RIGHT NOW! I LIVE IN MEMPHIS AND HAD HEARD ABOUT JUNIOR KIMBROUGH'S PLAYING AT HIS OWN BARREL HOUSE JUST DOWN THE ROAD. I WAS ALWAYS GOING TO SEE HIM BUT HE PASSED BEFORE I GOT AROUND TO IT. I WISH I COULD TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME AND GO TO JUNIOR'S JOINT AND SEE HIM PERFORM. LET THIS BE A LESSON TO YOU TOO! THERE ARE NO GUARANTEED TOMOROWS FOR ANY OF US IN THIS WORLD!
I'm ashamed to say I live in Mississippi and have for the past six years, only now to have discovered this amazing man. I really have been missing out.
you know people happen to luck on to GREAT musicians on you-tube and say what equipment is he using, what year is this, where can i get that ?This is what i have to say -----if you really want to know go to their website and read Bio and learn the info from the source.Dont be a lazy prick and take what some Jo Smo has to say about turning up the the volume /gain on a overdrive amp.If you really like it research it.
@chungazrevenge Yes and now, whoever said that was actually right in telling him that. All you need is just an amp and an idea, you don't need the same equipment or effects or anything.
He's ruined me for almost any other blues music. He went to the Lord in 1998 and I want to believe God quieted the angels and spirits and said "this is Mister David Junior Kimbrough, and he's better than the rest and heaven just got nastier with a groove as big as the sky."
I was just watching Buddy Guy playing with a little ten kid. That is all fine and good, but man if you want to hear the blues played with sweat and tears, this is where you want to be.
oh, how I would've loved to stop by there that night and strolled up with my "E" harp and ripped a solo over that groove!!! it would've been vanilla and the chocolate chips!!! Kick ass groove and more soul here than can be found on the radio today
@easymelon2187 Don't know what distortion he is using. It's likely just an overdriven amp. If you're looking into getting a good dirty sound out of a guitar, get a nice tube amp and turn the volume and/or gain up until you get the sound you want.
@counterlucid remember with the distortion thing I play through a fender hot rod deville and a fender hot rod blues junior and i only need a hair of drive to get junior kimbrough's tone and the thing to point out in this is that junior has the reverb pretty high too which i really like a lot!
@easymelon2187 Check out Kenny Brown's site if a contac ask him.......he played with RL Burnside for well over 20 yrs and Junior as well, Cedell Davis.........
@easymelon2187 Fender Deluxe Reverb. Crank it up, and put reverb to taste and there you go. (You will most likely need a guitar with humbuckers to really overdrive it. Or put a tubescreamer in front of it and crank the volume with the overdrive knob all the way down.) Plus you need soul. :)
I can't stop listening to this. That bass player is no joke either. Once you get into the song it's hard to realize that it's 'only' three guys making all that music.
I just saw this move the last night. If you like low-down blues this man is (was) so good it's hard to fathom how he never really got more widely know. this performance is so powerful

easymelon2187 1 year ago 5
@easymelon2187 Don't know what distortion he is using. It's likely just an overdriven amp. If you're looking into getting a good dirty sound out of a guitar, get a nice tube amp and turn the volume and/or gain up until you get the sound you want.

that's right, and to get junior's sound a solidbody guitar might be useful. no strat will get that drone.

@counterlucid
oh well and i think there's some reverb effect to it.
bluesplaylist 11 months ago
Yup sounds like an overdriven tube amp with the reverb turned up moderately high to produce that haunting tone.
cfjames1 11 months ago
@counterlucid or better yet, get a shitty amp and turn it on. i love my $50 epiphone guitar when im playing blues.
itstrickett09 11 months ago
@easymelon2187 old Peavey tube amps are good for that kind of sound. I've got a mid 80s Peavey "Heritage" that gets as close as anything I've heard.
bootlegpreacher 1 year ago
@easymelon2187 its also i little bit of reverb
bok255 1 year ago
@easymelon2187 - I would say an old tube amp of some sort.

lots of reverb, about half way. A good fuzz pedal can get you a good tone. but a fender twin reverb tube amp is all you need.
