  • Played 'cello under Mahler at the Wiener Staatsoper. They didn't get along. I was introduced to this through Zubin Mehta's LP on London (Decca) from the 1970's with the Wiener Philharmoniker. Ken Young, New Zealand Symphony pointed me to this work. Brilliance!!

  • Whose version is this?

  • Radio Bratislava Symphony Orchestra/ Ludovit Rajter

  • I heard all his symphonies. This is addictive music. Genius indeed on many levels.

  • This - in my opinion, the greatest symphony of the 20th century, bar none - is a work of genius on so many levels. The clue is in the number of the symphony itself - 4!

There's now a Philharmonia miniature score of the work, which repays close study, as does Erich Graf's superb thematic analysis in Studien zu Franz Schmidt Band I (if you read German), or Tom Corfield's masterly published dissertation.

To appreciate the brilliance of the orchestration of this work you have to hear it live!

  • Myaskovsky's 7th, Alfvén's 4th, Glière's 3rd or Florent Schmitt's Symphonie Concertante are also rarely heard masterpieces from the XXth century !

  • @Fredigundis22 I totally agree, this is amazing music. I have discovered the music of this great and humble man about 15 years ago and have been listening to it ever since, and it is always a spiritual experience. Best regards, Rik Metz, the Netehrlands
