  • looks like an adventure!! camping out on an island and shark fishing from a kayak for some food! well done mate. I'm looking to catch a bull shark from my local river soon. did feel bit sad seeing him all tired there after giving up and just calmly swimming but thats the way it goes. good luck for future catches

  • Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Bull sharks have quite the reputation for aggressive behavior, so be careful! And get it on video - I'd love to see it!

    - Don -

  • must be great to fish for shark in that way

  • It is a lot of fun - especially the "sleigh ride"! Thanks for commenting!

    Don

  • Nice job Woodkayaker!! IBMills241 obviously is a keyboard tuffguy who's never caught a fish on a kayak. The thrill is 10x that on a boat or on shore!!

  • Thanks GadnerN! I enjoyed your videos - especially the one on Half Moon Bay - great family fun!

    Don

  • IBMills241 - WTF do YOU have to say about it? You have a pussy video about a cat walking on a fence. You wouldn't know extreme if it bit you on the ass.

  • @skinkayaker What's wrong with having a cat video;)

  • My trouble is catching something OTHER than Black Tips and Hammerheads. Nothing else when fishing Honeymoon Island with Pinfish. Good fights, but I need something new. I need to take a trip with someone who knows what they're doing...

  • i envy you man,, ive always wanted to catch a shark.. never did... ill get it one day.. for sure

  • Thanks! Be careful though. Be sure to read all of the stuff I wrote about the video - click "more info" in the upper right of this page, for some safety tips.

    Don

  • Thanks Don. I checked out your wood framed and skinned kayak website. I only wish my yak could have a sleek hull like yours while paddling out, then convert to my ultra stable plastic tub for fishing. I am actually going to look real hard at the new Ocean Kayak Torque with the integrated electric motor. I am 56 and have several pounds of metal hardware in my lower spine, so long paddles in my "poly barge" are out of the question. I am fisherman first/kayaker second.

    thx again.

  • Hey Don,

I thought I saw you mention what model camera you used. Now I can't find it. Maybe I've sat out in the sun too long! Can you help with camera brand, model #, ect.? Thanks in advance.

  • Sure - glad to help. I started out with the Pentax W30 a couple of years ago, then the W40. I am now using the Pentax W60. It has high resolution (10 megapixel), uses up to 8 gig memory cards, and is capable of high resolution video. I used a cheap helmet cam for the blacktip video - the Oregon Scientific ATC2K. You can get them for under $100 these days. Poor resolution, but it gets the video, and it's waterproof! It takes up to a 2 gig card. The Pentax W60 sells for around $250.

    Don

  • Preface: Before last month, I have never even sat in/on a kayak. I recently picked up a cheap used Ocean Caper 11' SOT. I outfitted it with the usual fishing gear. I'm from Indiana but my first kayak fishing trip was in the Tampa Bay area. I was lucky enough to catch (and release unharmed) a nearly 4-foot bonnethead shark. WHAT A BLAST THESE THINGS ARE ON LIGHT TACKLE! I used 12 lb. braid with a 30# florocarbon leader. I never once felt "un-safe". Good ones to learn on. Great Fun.

  • WOW!!! I have just one question... How are you EVER going to top that, fishing in Indiana? What an exciting catch - I hope you got pictures!

    Don

  • Hi Don,

Not even gunna try to top that in Indiana. My kayak is in my Mother-in-Law's garage near Tampa Bay. We try to fly down a couple times a year. So while my other half is busy shopping, visiting, and sitting out in the sun, I'll be out looking for a tow in the bay. Love your videos, keep 'em coming.

  • Is any type of shark good eating?

  • Sure, Michael. It's a mild-flavored & totally boneless white meat. Sharks have layers of cartiledge, instead of bones. I soaked the steaks in milk for a few hours, and then discarded the milk, then cooked as you would cook any other fish. Blacktips & spinners are good - I can't tell you about other species - check out Johnny Ceviche's videos & ask him about makos & threshers.

    Don

  • Cool thanks Don...So just cut the meat away from the cartilage?

  • It's pretty easy. Cut from the top, about 3/4" wide steaks, then remove the skin from the outside, and the cartilage from the inside - that's it. The milk removes the urea from the meat - important step.

  • wow over an hour man that's weird.right now im rigging my kayak with a trolley system and some rod and reel holders.and for you instead of towing a shark that far lol u shod get a fish cooler and put him/(her) in there anw vwala.have fun fishing i know i will.lol.

  • We were camping out of the kayaks for 5 days when I caught this shark - no room in the kayak for a 5 foot long cooler... don't even own one.

Good luck going after anything big in the kayak - be safe! Read the full description of the video for safety tips. Keep the drag LOOSE! Too tight, and that big fish will take your gear, or pull you over.

    Don

  • Thanks for some GOOD entertainment...Love your video!!

Nice to see you have a life and will die a happy man many years from now.....unlike some people who dont know what it is to be ALIVE and can only leave negative comments to proof that they are assholes.

    THANKS

  • Thank you, Ramcat! I'm glad you enjoyed watching... that's why I made these videos. Yes, it's good to be alive & enjoying life.

  • Great vid ! Ignore all the hipocrits who are chewing on chicken while they ridicule others who eat fish.

  • Thanks Dinehope! I read & replied to your comment on part 1 of this video. Good luck, and be safe!

  • Here's a note to all viewers:

This shark was killed, and 5 people shared in eating it during this camping trip - it did not go to waste, any more than your most recent meal did - be it veggie or meat. If you can't deal with that, then you have no business watching this type of video. Like most of the world, I am omnivorous. DO NOT try to use this video for your personal political statements... this is NOT your forum.

  • I was enjoying the vid until you killed it, they are so much more beautiful alive.

  • Do you eat meat? Then stop being a hypocrite. Do you eat veggies? I hereby protest! Equal rights for all plants!!! You should catch & release all veggies! Eat dirt!!! (But please don't harm the bacteria in the dirt)

Now... don't you feel silly, Brucie? You should... you are.

  • Brucie's 2nd comment was too foul to keep here - it has been removed, and he has been blocked. He obviously had an agenda, and was NOT just here to view the video.

  • seriously though... who eats blacktip shark?

  • I've had it served to me in restaurants. It is a very mild-flavored meat. Some people would never eat catfish, even though it is among the best table fare... very highly regarded in southern states. Personal tastes vary.

  • Very nice shark, awesome video and really good technique on the kayak

  • Danny -

Thanks for the great compliments - that means a lot to me. It sure was a lot of fun!

    Don

  • Awesome video man, im 17, been kayaking for 4 years or so, and canoeing since i was like 3 or 4 with my dad. Just got heavy into kayak fishing the past year. Plan on going out for some cobia and sharks this summer. The big drum start running soon too. Got 2 big stripers in November and December. Biggest was 48" 41lbs, need to get a nice waterproof camera to mount on my head or on a pole up high lookin down at the kayak. Keep up the great vids, and dont listen to them ignorant PETA people.

  • Thanks Rob! You've got a great group there - the "Pirates Of Lynnhaven". Cool forum for kayak fishers! WOW! A 41 lb. striper... must have been a "Lynnhaven Sleigh Ride"... aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!

    Don

  • Thanks Skate!

You do some pretty cool stuff on that skateboard - I checked out your videos. That drained pool is perfect!

    Good luck fishing!

    Don

  • Nice Vids Man!!

im going up to the lake tomorrow :D

wish us luck! nice shark to!!

  • whats with the helmet...are there many rapids in florida lol

  • LOL - you are so right... but I needed something to hold my HELMET CAM!!! A whitewater helmet seemed appropriate.

Thanks for adding a bit of levity, denw.

    Don

  • just playin lol i am an avid kayak fisherman too up here on long island i go for bluefish, stripers, fluke etc...would looooove to tackle one of those blacktips!! keep up the good work!

  • Cool Catch. Best kayak fishing in the world!

  • Thanks, John! Keep on catchin' those monster snook!

    Don

  • looks awsome mate nice catch thats a bit bigger than the fish i usually catch in the UK

  • Thanks Olly - it sure was fun! Although I am sure you've got some pretty big sharks there too. I guess I'm lucky, in that our water is MUCH warmer, and often much calmer than in your sometimes stormy seas. The Channel, and the North Seas are legendary. When you get a good catch on video, be sure to send me a link!

    Don

  • ive got 1 sea fishing vid on my channel where i catch some nice triggerfish

  • Hi, I'm a "know nothing". I just wanted to ask how you make sure that it's a shark that you're getting but not a small fish? Or, how do you make sure that ONLY sharks will eat the bait? ( I get really excited already when a small fish nibbles on my line. :D

  • You can't really be sure that only a shark will take the bait - it could be anything from a tarpon, to a large jack. It won't be a small fish, because the bait is a fish that's 10" to 14" long. Anything that bites on that, is going to give you a good fight - shark or not... it's going to be big.

    Don

  • Just like to say thanks for sharing. What type of line where you useing? & the type of pole you had?

  • Thank you!!!

Fishing gear: "Old" Penn 650 reel, on a 7 1/2' rod, 40lb. Power Pro & 40 lb wire leader, 8/0 circle sea hook. I have used ladyfish, jacks, and mackeral for bait - the more action & "flavor" in the water, the better.

If you are thinking of doing this - be safe! Keep the drag light enough to allow the shark to strip line out - use your hand on the reel to apply drag.

Be ready to cut away, and fish with a friend close by.

    Don

  • Just like to say that is some good fishing. Thanks foe sharing it. What type of line mono or power pro, where you useing & rod?

  • super sweet boat!

  • Thank you, John "Fishyaker" & "22Shipper75"!

Kayak fishers should click on fishyaker & check out his videos. John does the BEST DIY videos, and they're all for kayak fishing!

22Shipper - Thank you! It's a Pygmy Osprey HP. I painted the NW indian design on the front deck. I checked out your video from the tournament - sorry about that cheap camera, but I'll be watching to see what you can do with the new one - sounds good!

    Don

  • Well done Don.

  • WOW
