It's amazing how these people can rationalize. She doesn't sleep her in house because she works a lot, not because her bedroom is a rancid garbage heap. Sad.
The court gave me custody of my house and teen age son. My wife lives with her parents now but is still in denial and getting no treatment, she refuses a court ordered evaluation. Her family won't help her they don't want to admit they aren't perfect! Very sad and stressful for me and my son.
My father is an extreme hoarder, it went so far that first my mum left, then my sister, then me..he's been alone for years now, and I don't even want to know how the house looks today. The thing that has hurt me most trough the years, was the fact that there was never any information about this. I grew up thinking I was the only one while I wasn't. It's time to get this disorder out on the open.
I'm the oppisite of a hoarder. I don't like having too many things. I give away the things I don't want or use anymore. I feel a sense of accomplish when I finish something off and throw it away.
My mom was a hoarder, too, and I understand what these adult children are coping with. I see it as an addiction, and the people who try to get them to change just get pulled into compulsive loops of their own. I feel for people stuck living with a hoarder (like my dad), but I can't let myself be involved.
My mother is a compulsive hoarder. She keeps buying useless material things that we don't need, and feels like she did something good. Like the lady in the movie. We ask her to clean it up, but she throws a temper tantrum, like that of a 3 year old child. My parents fight about it all the time. My friends are always like "wow, what happened to your house?"
It's killing me. My mom has OCD, depression, and anxiety, and now I think my dad and I are getting it.
Lol. My family has inhabited the same house for my entire 15 years of life because of my mother's compulsive hoarding. My friends all think that we're drug dealers or that we don't like them because we can never ever have them over.
My mother is like this, and the even MENTION or bringing it up, makes her furious. I ask her why she lives this way, and she always gives me "I'm going to clean it up" but she never does.
I just saw this doc on MSNBC. Very sad portrait, I could really feel the frustration on the part of this woman and her own family's struggle to help her sort, empty the house and all. In the U.S. it is so easy for hoarders to flourish since there is an excess of material things. One can clutter their house from just one day's dumpster diving... Seeing this doc, and the feature that Dr. Phil did on another woman, makes me want to reduce my things and be a zen minimalist.
yes, at both 10:00 PM and then at 1:00 AM. If you go on the MSNC website, click on the TV link, towards the bottom of the page you can see some clips from the movie and also there's a link for a Q & A from the director. Also check the website for the movie for up coming screenings, including international ones and SUNDANCE.

This is consumerism at it's best.

I've found that the hoarding person only sees the situation from their own point of view.
If they watch this movie or the Oprah special or the MSNBC special, they begin to understand.
It's always easier for them to critique someone else and then have that "Oh My God...that's like me" moment.
