Animals have suffered,& continue to suffer in labs. for break throughs in science & medicine. Rockets, space ships? Monkeys were sent out first to test them. Automobiles? Humans are the only animal that have to be taught how to use the potty, speak/read/write, use eating utensils, then formally schooled from K-12, maybe college & grad. school. But it doesn't stop there: we also need a moral education--right/wrong, good/evil, etc. & some people NEVER learn basic lessons in life. Did you know our frontal lobe of the brain doesn't fully develop until we are in our late 20s? So much for human intelligence.

The hunters & gatherers honed their hunting skills by watching the predatory animals, thus enabling the human to secure food and survive. @gkamericoast Here's one of many examples of how animals have outsmarted the so-called intellectually & morally fit humans: In Dec. 2004, when the Tsunami hit in Indonesia or Malaysia, IT WAS THE ANIMALS WHO SENSED IT WAS COMING & FLED TO THE HILLS, NOT THE HUMANS, WHO WERE KILLED. Now, if humans were so damn intellectual, why didn't they see what was coming despite what the seismologist may have warn? Why didn't they survive like the animals? I'll rest my case. There was a book I read when I was very young called "Island of the Blue Dolphins" that actually addressed the very point you made. At one point in this book, a wild dog saves a young girl from certain death by taking her to high ground. It's quite a beautiful story

This is a bad summary of the role of animals in Egyptian cosmology. Firstly, if the cult worship of animals only came about in the late period, what was the role before then for most of Egyptian history? They weren't cults. They were symbolic aspects of "god" or "creation" in nature. The original symbolic form is the most potent. An example is the fact that sobek or reptiles are part of the earliest creation leading to man as the earliest form of creation to rise out of the cosmic ocean.

Beast gods actually are not that uncommon in ancient history. Most did not have as noticeable a link to animals, but many religious pantheons of the ancient work had at least one beast-god.

This is also why we have such strong iconic animals, such as lions being considered regal and kings, monkeys being tricksters. and even the more modern one of elephants never forgetting. These 'aspects' are something we take in stride due to the way our ancestors iconified beasts into godlike entities.
