Yes hes saying "this affected him, me, and his family" in a very bland way that could be written by a 14 year old. Being poetic is fake? Yeeah. Poison Oak by Bright Eyes would be a good example of how to write a well written song about suicide. It is his job as a songwriter to put some effort into his lyrics, not blandly reciting the past like he's talking to a counselor, theres a thing called creativity, you know, the basis of art.

This is honest and his writing style is honest and no-nonsense.

Lots of artists have this approach and lots of people enjoy it.

I, for one, find Conor Oberst's lyrics poetic to the point of pretension and a lot of times not very genuine (since you mentioned him).

I didn't need Perfume Genius to woo me with pretty language. I felt his pain, and that's what I want and expect.

Lots of artists have this approach: lots of writers with a severe lack of imagination and creative prowess. Yeah lots of people listen to Justin Beiber as well.. great point there...
