Only reason you would need a xeon version of nehalem is because it has support for ecc memory which stands for "Error Correction Memory." It can be deployed in business situation for example if a bank is doing transactions, they need that ECC to check for errors so that way your deposit of money does not show another number. ECC adds more latency to between the memory and CPU so some performance is lost than say the consumer version of nehalem.
also, an operating system is only as secure as you are smart, I use minimal security software and I've never had any of my personal information jeopardized in any way and I've never been subjected to any viruses or malicious software

A) Ok, so if this HP computer is just a pile of shit because it runs Windows, then Apple computers are shit too. They can run Windows natively. Hell, that HP is very capable of running OS X. On reason it doesn't is because Apple doesn't want other manufacturers to use OS X on their machines. Although I don't agree with that, it's Apple's product so they can do with it as they please. But if you were to run OS X on that HP, it'd run similarly to a Mac desktop.

@NooN824 I have used Macintosh (a lot- enough to say I know plenty about them) and honestly, they're great computers. I just think they're too pricey for what they come with. Plus, they don't come with everything I need like a large HD space and a better sound card. Apple doesn't give thaty kind of stuff for under $3,000. I don't know about you, but I cannot afford that type of thing... I can get a customized PC that fits all of my needs and runs perfectly for one third of the cost.
@NickVocal 7 is nice, it's the best WIndows to date (the most "pure" goes to 2k though, no bloat!). But, it's not as nice an experience as OSX, at least to me. Windows is still plagued by decades of UI elements that linger throughout the system. One panel will look like this, another like that, with very little consistency and lots of pretty damn redundant stuff that just makes things confusing for the less techie. It's an improvement yes, but it's still no OSX.

Second, your knowledge of Xeon and i7 CPU's is severely lacking. Why dont you head on over to the Intel site and read about them. Both the i7 and Xeon is the same identical chip. Every spec is identical, with the exception of QPI for dual socket configurations, and ECC RAM. You're clearly a victim of marketing.

@FoodMoTron3k Those two difference alone make the Xeons a far better platform. They're built for scalability and reliability rather than pure all out drag race speed. They're designed to be taxed 100% for the majority of their life span, which is what a workstation is for. They're designed to expand to much higher levels of memory addressing than consumer chips. The boards they run on are far more durable and scalable too. They're effectively servers. You pay for reliability.
@TalesOfWar For a 24/7 server that is running your worldwide business ECC RAM, redundant PSUs, RAID systems, high endurance harddisks and maybe even redundant RAM are valid options. For a workstation this is simply not the case.
Current Core i7's are by far fast enough for all tasks a usual Workstation will have to face.

i am a video professional. my system is a home built 8 core dual xeon workstation built on a supermicro server motherboard with velociraptor sata drives... i got way more value for my dollar than buying a mac pro or the hp z800. i also unfortunately own an 8 core mac pro so that i can integrate with apple final cut pro editors who work on a system that isn't compatible with 90 percent of the rest of the fucking world.

Well Apple soldier, I shall answer your question. Professionals use Xeons, not i7 because Xeons can be scaled in parallel to work with another CPU while getting the same performance as an i7.The idea is to get two CPU in the same machine for more cores.

An i7-980x would beat the shit out of all of the Xeon 5500 series. There is no direct comparison of which i7 is like which Xeon, but by benchmarking we can figure out which i7's are better than which Xeon's and the 950 or higher beats out the lowest end Mac Pro's for processor power. But ya, it is priced so that they can make as much money as possible.
@Disinf3ctant The one huge selling point of the Xeon's is the ability for 2 to be used on the same motherboard, which allows for more cores. They have to add that tech in the Xeon's, so that would increase the price slightly, but it is perfect for Mac's, overpriced. Cause then they can add on their extra 200 or 300 bucks and no one would really notice.

I had Macs and Windows PCs, I never had bluescreens or kernel panic (unless I FORCED it).
Also, Mac OS X has the same kind of speed than Windows x64 (OS X is also x64 by default).
The window-management with the Dock, Exposé and all the other tools might be slightly better, but well.
Mac OS X = stable (unless YOU brake it)
Windows = stable (unless YOU brake it)

well in the Mac community, we have configuration too, i admit, perhaps not as much as PCs, but we're happy with it. Mac users are happy with what they have because of the computer experience and the advanced OS. yes, hardware is overpriced on the Mac for base models ONLY. as for adding RAM and such things, it's actually cheaper on a Mac. please don't offend something just because you can't afford it, it's childish. i wish Mac haters could just see the light.

A) Ok, so if this HP computer is just a pile of shit because it runs Windows, then Apple computers are shit too. They can run Windows natively. Hell, that HP is very capable of running OS X. On reason it doesn't is because Apple doesn't want other manufacturers to use OS X on their machines. Although I don't agree with that, it's Apple's product so they can do with it as they please. Plus, they don't come with everything I need like a large HD space and a better sound card. Apple doesn't give thaty kind of stuff for under $3,000. I don't know about you, but I cannot afford that type of thing... I can get a customized PC that fits all of my needs and runs perfectly for one third of the cost.

@NickVocal 7 is nice, it's the best WIndows to date (the most "pure" goes to 2k though, no bloat!). But, it's not as nice an experience as OSX, at least to me. Windows is still plagued by decades of UI elements that linger throughout the system. One panel will look like this, another like that, with very little consistency and lots of pretty damn redundant stuff that just makes things confusing for the less techie. It's an improvement yes, but it's still no OSX.

Second, your knowledge of Xeon and i7 CPU's is severely lacking. Why dont you head on over to the Intel site and read about them. Both the i7 and Xeon is the same identical chip. @FoodMoTron3k Those two difference alone make the Xeons a far better platform. They're built for scalability and reliability rather than pure all out drag race speed. They're designed to be taxed 100% for the majority of their life span, which is what a workstation is for. They're designed to expand to much higher levels of memory addressing than consumer chips. The boards they run on are far more durable and scalable too. They're effectively servers. You pay for reliability.

i am a video professional. my system is a home built 8 core dual xeon workstation built on a supermicro server motherboard with velociraptor sata drives... i got way more value for my dollar than buying a mac pro or the hp z800. i also unfortunately own an 8 core mac pro so that i can integrate with apple final cut pro editors who work on a system that isn't compatible with 90 percent of the rest of the fucking world.

How does running windows make a PC shit? Why would a PC only be able to run Windows? PC can even run OS X obversely not with all the features but if Apple made OS X in a way that a PC would be able to run all the features it would.

Well Apple soldier, I shall answer your question. Professionals use Xeons, not i7 because Xeons can be scaled in parallel to work with another CPU while getting the same performance as an i7.The idea is to get two CPU in the same machine for more cores.
Now if you're using a single CPU and you go out of your way to buy a Xeon instead of an i7 then you sir are fucking retarded. The extra price is a premium for the multiprocessor capability.

If anybody wants proof that the core i7 is a better value by a mile than the Intel Xeon's Apple uses, go to the ixtlabs website, and search Intel Core i7-950 Processor. The first article pits an i7-950 against a Xeon 5560, both of which are quad cores with hyperthread and turbo-boost. The Xeon will run you over $1300 and the 950 will cost you about $300. Check it out to see AppleSoldier proven wrong yet again.

@Disinf3ctant No its not, take a look at the actual processors and take a look at the benchmarks I suggested, the i7-950 beats out the Xeon 5560 in every test. An i7-980x would beat the shit out of all of the Xeon 5500 series. Again, benchmarks are the best way to test the best, and it has been proven that the i7-950 is better than the 5560, just putting it out there.

Really? Never noticed. I do know one thing though. It's definitely an re branded i7 of some sort, probably the lower end models. They sell it to corporations for more cause they know the dipshits in the management department will buy anything. Just like nVidias quadros. Their just rebranded GTX 470s being sold for around 6 times the price.

@Disinf3ctant The timeline with the Xeon's and i7's is actually kinda weird. The Xeon 5500's came out before majority of the i7's, but they are based on a similar architecture. There is no direct comparison of which i7 is like which Xeon, but by benchmarking we can figure out which i7's are better than which Xeon's and the 950 or higher beats out the lowest end Mac Pro's for processor power. But ya, it is priced so that they can make as much money as possible.

@Disinf3ctant The one huge selling point of the Xeon's is the ability for 2 to be used on the same motherboard, which allows for more cores. They have to add that tech in the Xeon's, so that would increase the price slightly, but it is perfect for Mac's, overpriced. Cause then they can add on their extra 200 or 300 bucks and no one would really notice.
