@halfportalstrike I'm not posative what he does, but it sounds like he's alternating notes higher on the neck and the same string open back and forth. Play around with it, you'll figure it out. I'm trying to learn the whole thing right now too...
@mikecedeno I am actually serious. And I can't assume that you are a musician. If you are, then you have no right to be judging anything as good as this. you have to respect the musicians artwork.
dude you're not getting the point...look it up, "Primus Sucks" was their band slogan in the 80's, early 90's. And no, I'm not a musician, I'm a researcher...that's how i know things...obviously you are not. Please do yourself a favor and look it up so you don't look so ignorant.
@mikecedeno Of course i'm not a researcher. I'm a musician. Unluckily I haven't been a fan of Primus, so there is no chance I would have known that. I thought you meant they aren't good.
@monkey1506 Don't get silly now. At no point does Claypool play the two parts simultaneously like in The Reddings recording. Of which there's only ONE bassist, Dexter Redding. Admittedly he cheated in the studio by layering bass tracks to get the two bass parts but it was only Dexter. The Reddings - The Awakening (1980)
@kax61 um...you did just listed to him play the song, right? I believe something is only beyond one's skill level when they are not able to play it...or record it...or perform it...you're dumb.
@CourtJackal001 He was calling him Cles Laypool as a joke in response to an earlier post. No one would be foolish enough to insult him on a Primus video.
oh man this song encapsulates everything we try to represent as a band with only a bassist and a drummer! but i have a long time before i'll be able to play as good as claypool, or flea or wooten and thats just how shit goes and you just be thankful that there are so many good bassists to inspire you.
i like all different types of music, from pop, to primus. who the fuck cares, music is all about mood and expression, who cares if u like justin beiber or slayer?
When I first heard this I was dumbfounded at how cool it was..it had everything a good bass song should have. There was a time that I thought I wonld NEVER be that good. Well, I have finally learned the entire song and I am currently trying to get my drummer up to par with me so we can do this live.
When's the last time FLEA wrote a song ,sang it and played amazing bass lines to go with it? flea is good, but he's not in the same league as Les or Gedy Lee .Though I'm not sure if what Les does can actually be described as "singing" ,but being able to write, play and sing, to me is what seperates the artist from the run o' the mill musician.
I disagree, I think Flea's lines are much more creative and original, while Les Claypool is more focused on quirkyness and speed (not so much in this song). Flea knows he is supposed to be the support and he does a great job, while Claypool normally makes himself the center of attention.
Are you saying that Victory Wooten needs to be more subtle and get behind his band? Jaco Pastorius? Stu Hamm? Stanley Clark? Marcus Miller?
Some music is just bass-centered. If anything, more creativity and originality is found in making the instrument that's expected to hide in the background work so well on its own. Then again, that's not the point either, is it? Plenty of amazing bassists lay low (Tony Levin for instance).
Using that as a meter for creativity is fucking stupid.
I beg to differ about Flea's being more creative. His riffs are very simple to figure out because all the notes he hits are within a finger's reach. Flea's the one who focuses a lot more on speed. Well Les and Flea both focus on speed, and honestly I don't like any of their songs where it sounds like the bass is taking a crap.
I really dig both and I think they are amazing. Flea is always doing the perfect bassline for a song while Les is more of the main focus on the song and takes a lot of space( which ain't so bad either)
you cant say either flea or les claypool is th ebette rbassist, flea is way way faster than clay, but clays lines are much more innovative and origional. but seriously, music isn't a competition people.
i dunno, i've seen some of les's stuff he can play pretty fast, and could probably play faster than flea if he tried, still that's my opinion. i think flea's too overrated
limp bizkit trying to do opiate was about stupid but your right this is great.its nice when you can show another artist respect by doing justice to one of there songs
What a wonderful interpretation of an already wonderful strong. Doing covers is such a difficult exercice. Limp Bizkit for example trying to reinterpretate Tool's Opiate was just totally ridiculous. Yet Les Claypool's Awakening is a treat to listen to.
Yes. The Reddings came out with the song CALLED the Awakening in like 1980 something. They are the sons of the late Otis Redding.
There is no such thing as BEST bass player.

Victor Wooten's Classical Thump is a song that if you can't listen to for more than 5 minutes, your 'opinion' seriously can't be trusted. Also Wooten and Steve Bailey's remake of a Jaco song (portrait of Tracy) is classic. Flea, Claypool, Lee, Clarke, Miller are all GREAT.
i wonder what your thoughts on tony levin are? i saw him with peter gabriel a few years ago and have loved him ever since! maybe you could recommend a few good tracks to listen to? thanks :)
tony levin is a fantastic player. I think he also plays the 'stick' too if I am correct.
His choice of notes, and style are very smooth, but if he needs to hit ya with machine gun notes, he is DEFINATELY capable of that too. @UrbanUnderground Exactly!!!! That is PRECISELY the message that needs to be put out there to the music community!!!! good on you!!!! There is no such thing as bad music. it's all about opinion and different tastes.
@UrbanUnderground what if one fruit is more healthy than another one, wouldn't it be better? so than by process of elimination there has to be a BEST fruit.
I get your premise, but how often does what is the most 'healthy' for you 'TASTE' the best? Therefore whatever is 'most healthy' couldn't be 'overall best' could it?
Apples are 'best' for the Teeth/Gums, Oranges are 'best' for the immune system, Grapes are 'best' for the digestive system, etc. etc.
So here we are back to what is 'best' for the individual..
Again this is just my 'Opinion', not any life altering event hahaha..
@UrbanUnderground I goota argue that statement. You might like a certain "fruit" but take this into consideration. Some might need to be fed everyday, need pruning regularly and lots of attention to develope the flavor you want. Some only need to be fed once a week, no pruning and not much attention to grow into the desired flavor. That being said a true musician can look at the work and detail that leads up to the point of performance and say that someone is actually better then the other.
@scla6986 he means everything is made on opinions... even if someone things theres someone better than himself there can be still others that think his work his better than the other
What type of dis-assiciate are you on? Flea is not "GOD". Les claypool has about 50 times more creative bones in his body. Flea is great, sure, but, FUCK, Claypool is Claypool;
I can play this on bass but I still think the drummer could have had more fillers because then it would be even more fun to play

I love Victor but Victor doesn't have the history of Stanley.
I love Bernard Edwards (Chic)
I love Bootsy Collins
I love Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Mark King because to sing and play monster basslines isn't easy.

@UrbanUnderground thats just something people who know they are worse than the person they are being compared to say

I meant to say good not god

What type of dis-assiciate are you on? Flea is not "GOD". Les claypool has about 50 times more creative bones in his body. Flea is great, sure, but, FUCK, Claypool is Claypool;
and you cannot beat Claypool.

@hailmetal16 In order: John Entwistle - (The Who), Les Claypool - (Primus), Geddy Lee - (Rush), Victor Wooten - (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones).
But as you said "Claypool is Claypool" Can't compare anyone with him, his style is one of a kind.
