  • I can play this on bass but I still think the drummer could have had more fillers because then it would be even more fun to play

  • I don't want more music. I want les.

  • Like this comment if this is the first song you've heard of les...

  • @PeaceLoveBeatles4 this actually a reddings cover song

  • Can anyone tell me what les is doing @2:41 ? im trying to learn this song, and made it this far but I have no idea what hes doing there :S

  • @halfportalstrike I'm not posative what he does, but it sounds like he's alternating notes higher on the neck and the same string open back and forth. Play around with it, you'll figure it out. I'm trying to learn the whole thing right now too...

  • @halfportalstrike the song ends at like 1:55. the rest is just filler, why bother learning it?

  • @T16Akatsuki I know. But its still cool and I want to earn it anyways.

  • Comment removed

  • haha as soon as I got home I just started learning this cus its been in my head all week :P

  • Now that's what's known in musician's circles as being "in the groove". If you try to argue that you're too stupid to be allowed to use a computer!

  • this sounds like it was done live off the floor. I love recording like that.

  • this sounds like it was done live off the floor. I love recording like that.

  • He be slappin' da bass mahn!

  • Les Claypool > 9000.

  • Leslie > The Reddings.

  • Why it says full song? Why someone will cut this shit?. is Just #EPIC

  • Primus Sucks!

  • @mikecedeno if you expect attention by writing shit like that. then you suck, and i assume you have a issue.

  • @drinksquash

haha you're funny. that was their slogan back in the early days. you're just a big silly, aren't you?

  • @mikecedeno I am actually serious. And I can't assume that you are a musician. If you are, then you have no right to be judging anything as good as this. you have to respect the musicians artwork.

  • @drinksquash

dude you're not getting the point...look it up, "Primus Sucks" was their band slogan in the 80's, early 90's. And no, I'm not a musician, I'm a researcher...that's how i know things...obviously you are not. Please do yourself a favor and look it up so you don't look so ignorant.

  • @mikecedeno Of course i'm not a researcher. I'm a musician. Unluckily I haven't been a fan of Primus, so there is no chance I would have known that. I thought you meant they aren't good.

  • @drinksquash

    PRIMUS SUCKS!

  • @chiloecko Ok.

  • In the redding version there are 2 bassists but Claypool didn't know this and learned how to play it with just himself

  • @monkey1506 is that a fact???

  • @DanyyelEPaiva yes he states it himself

  • ()=)___,_,_F,u,n,k,y_,_,_)--------

  • It was written and composed by The Reddings in 1980.

This is the ORIGINAL Awakening with the bass played by Dexter Redding (Son of Otis Redding). So it was NOT originally created by Les Claypool.

  • @Densonification

This is where you are partially wrong, the original was originally played with two basses but les rewrote it to suit one bass.

  • although the reddings version is "funkier" i think this version gets u moving more

  • Fucking great jam!

  • les is the blackest white guy ever.

    just above Zappa

  • @ Rugby9819 so does ur mum bro oh and that fuckign gay sport called uhmm..oh yeah rugby.. go touch little boys

  • @TheHelltorn Dude, Primus Sucks is what Primus fans say...... So Yeah, Primus Sucks \m/

  • @TheHelltorn Reasearch before telling the real fans to fuck off is always win. You lost.

  • I honestly like this version better than the The Reddings version.

  • Anyone know who the drummer is?

  • @RoboticsNShenanigans

It's Jay Lane. You know, that Primus guy.

  • I adore Cles Laypool.....but this one is not his thing. It's way beyond his skills.

  • @kax61 um...you did just listed to him play the song, right? I believe something is only beyond one's skill level when they are not able to play it...or record it...or perform it...you're dumb.

  • @CourtJackal001 He was calling him Cles Laypool as a joke in response to an earlier post. No one would be foolish enough to insult him on a Primus video.

  • Go and fuck yourself Cles Laidpool. You don't have the skills to outsmart this one.

  • 3 people are still sleeping.

  • ...That got me up on my feet moving around....MMMMMMMM good shit!

  • One of my favorite funk bassists of all time.

  • Loooooooooove it

  • im 13, and i like the bass on this

  • Victor Wooten disliked this video twice.

  • oh man this song encapsulates everything we try to represent as a band with only a bassist and a drummer! but i have a long time before i'll be able to play as good as claypool, or flea or wooten and thats just how shit goes and you just be thankful that there are so many good bassists to inspire you.

  • i like all different types of music, from pop, to primus. who the fuck cares, music is all about mood and expression, who cares if u like justin beiber or slayer?

  • sick

  • man man man, dieser pisser spielt aber auch beschissen. kann nicht verstehen, das der wichser immer so hoch gelobt wird

  • @therealbrains lol pisser is a german word

  • @therealbrains Sie verrückt Nazi für nicht Wertschätzung der Les Claypool

  • @HellolzEveryone Well that was not right but I agree with you. ;)

What you wanted to say was: "Du bist ein verrückter Nazi, wenn du Les Claypool nicht wertschätzt."

Translated in english your sentence would be: "You crazy nazi for not honour(Noun) of the Les Claypool."

  • @InsaneClownBitch yeah i just used translator

  • @HellolzEveryone No problem, i just wanted to seem intelligent.

  • mein gott spielt der kerl unsauber. das geht ja gar nicht. was für ein pfeife

  • Why can't we all realize that instead of arguing, we should be praising the creative genius of all the bassists that are being argues over

We should stop arguing and realize that there is only one issue in music at the moment

    AND IT'S SHITTY POP!

  • @ManBearPigInc well said

  • @ManBearPigInc thats what i try to do...

  • who wrote this song

  • @calebzia The Reddings

  • Brutaler Groove

  • Hey Mr. Pigface, you have a pig face.

  • The Awakening is a song that Les Claypool should never have touched. He does not have the capabilities to move Dexter Redding's original.

  • "The Awakening" is not a Claypool song. He only covers it. Original version belongs to "The Reddings"

  • best

  • First time I've properly listened to Claypool....he ROCKS!

  • So fun to play this on bass ;)

  • why are you all arguing over "who's the best bassist". does it matter? is it important? just be quiet and listen.

  • furthermore, why would you go to a video of something you dont like and talk about how you dont like it? Dont you have better things to do?

  • Otis Redding's song

  • \m/

  • good stuff! love it!

  • YES IVE GOT 53 SECONDS OF THIS LEARN JUST ANOTHER 2 mins

  • Otis Redding's son wrote this tune. It's a fact. It was done in 1980. Look it up. It's exactly the same tune

  • I will, one day, learn this!

  • When I first heard this I was dumbfounded at how cool it was..it had everything a good bass song should have. There was a time that I thought I wonld NEVER be that good. Well, I have finally learned the entire song and I am currently trying to get my drummer up to par with me so we can do this live.

  • @cosmicforums where u at? i can drum this song lol

  • Hell yeah, my band has 2 drummers and neither of them can do it.

Northern North Carolina.. Im all for a good jam. Ive got a decent bass rig as well, so I can sound almost exactly like Les in this recording.

  • biters? id like to see you say that to claypools face.

  • gladly. but i wont pay to see them they can go pay and see me

  • bought this cd yesterday

  • I love the quality of the record, nice and raw! >:D

  • *recording

  • I don't get this talk of bass having to be in the background. It sounds good and gels as a style of music... So where's the issue?

  • When's the last time FLEA wrote a song ,sang it and played amazing bass lines to go with it? flea is good, but he's not in the same league as Les or Gedy Lee .Though I'm not sure if what Les does can actually be described as "singing" ,but being able to write, play and sing, to me is what seperates the artist from the run o' the mill musician.

  • I totally agree with you.

  • i like how geddy lee plays bass but has such a high voice XP

  • I disagree, I think Flea's lines are much more creative and original, while Les Claypool is more focused on quirkyness and speed (not so much in this song). Flea knows he is supposed to be the support and he does a great job, while Claypool normally makes himself the center of attention.

  • Are you saying that Victory Wooten needs to be more subtle and get behind his band? Jaco Pastorius? Stu Hamm? Stanley Clark? Marcus Miller?

Some music is just bass-centered. If anything, more creativity and originality is found in making the instrument that's expected to hide in the background work so well on its own. Then again, that's not the point either, is it? Plenty of amazing bassists lay low (Tony Levin for instance).

Using that as a meter for creativity is fucking stupid.

  • no, that's not at all what i was saying.

  • Care to expand on that?

  • because all of the bands claypool has started he has been the center of attention because he can

  • I beg to differ about Flea's being more creative. His riffs are very simple to figure out because all the notes he hits are within a finger's reach. Flea's the one who focuses a lot more on speed. Well Les and Flea both focus on speed, and honestly I don't like any of their songs where it sounds like the bass is taking a crap.

  • I kinda agree with you dude.

I really dig both and I think they are amazing. Flea is always doing the perfect bassline for a song while Les is more of the main focus on the song and takes a lot of space( which ain't so bad either)

  • you cant say either flea or les claypool is th ebette rbassist, flea is way way faster than clay, but clays lines are much more innovative and origional. but seriously, music isn't a competition people.

  • i dunno, i've seen some of les's stuff he can play pretty fast, and could probably play faster than flea if he tried, still that's my opinion. i think flea's too overrated

  • The bass sound Les has here is perfect.

  • Primus SUCKS!!

  • @Rugby9819 I don't get it :(

  • Ahumm?

Check out the original from The Reddings :)

  • Niceeeeeeeeeeeeeee basswork

  • limp bizkit trying to do opiate was about stupid but your right this is great.its nice when you can show another artist respect by doing justice to one of there songs

  • What a wonderful interpretation of an already wonderful strong. Doing covers is such a difficult exercice. Limp Bizkit for example trying to reinterpretate Tool's Opiate was just totally ridiculous. Yet Les Claypool's Awakening is a treat to listen to.

  • That was awful. As was Avril Lavigne's sad attempt at SOAD's Chop Suey.

  • this was a reply to hedekbass's comment. Im not saying that the awakening is awful, im saying that limp bizkit's tool cover was awful.

  • Does anybody have the bass tabs for this song?

  • Best bet is to go by ear for it. Too many wrong tabs for it.

  • Pretty

  • is this song a cover?

  • yes it is

  • by who...?

  • The Reddings , if I remember correctly

  • Yes. The Reddings came out with the song CALLED the Awakening in like 1980 something. They are the sons of the late Otis Redding.

There is no such thing as BEST bass player.

Everyone has something they do that others cannot.

Victor Wooten's Classical Thump is a song that if you can't listen to for more than 5 minutes, your 'opinion' seriously can't be trusted. Also Wooten and Steve Bailey's remake of a Jaco song (portrait of Tracy) is classic. Flea, Claypool, Lee, Clarke, Miller are all GREAT.

  • Excelent comment... thank you sir.

  • i wonder what your thoughts on tony levin are? i saw him with peter gabriel a few years ago and have loved him ever since! maybe you could recommend a few good tracks to listen to? thanks :)

  • tony levin is a fantastic player. I think he also plays the 'stick' too if I am correct.

His choice of notes, and style are very smooth, but if he needs to hit ya with machine gun notes, he is DEFINATELY capable of that too. If I also remember correctly he played with King Crimson (Bill Bruford and co). so any King Crimson CD is worth getting (I have a few).. I think also that any JAZZ CD that has him on it is worth picking up as well.

  • awesome! thanks for the reply! i've listened to a lot of King Crimson stuff, luckily my parents were prog rockers, but i'll hunt down "jazz cd". is that the name of a band?

yeah he's a mind blowing player, he plays two sticks, one of them is bridged, which is an accomplishment to play in itself lol! hearing sledgehammer on fretless stick bass is phenomenal!

    thanks for the tips :)

  • flea is an awesome bassist, and he is better at full on/fast slap than les claypool, but claypool has a wider range of technique than flea, but their both great, original bassists!

  • you are crazy man flea is a great bassist, he may not be the best but he definitely is not overrated

  • flea is very overrated.

  • completely agreed. He couldn't hold a candle to Les.

  • well you see that's not true. if anything his skill is underrated. you obviously know nothing so just shh.

  • i don't know how good he is when he does his own thing but in his songs he doesn't beat this

  • flea is better. hands down. RHCP isn't the only thing flea can do.. he stands up with the bigs.

  • flea stands up with the bigs? Oh he was in 2 seperate super bands where he was the feature like les? thats cool- didnt know that.

Les claypool is just as a big name if not bigger then flea. (bigger imo :P)

  • Les Claypool is in a three way tie for best bassist ever. It's a tough call between him, Victor Wooten, and Geddy Lee. Flea is a close fourth too.

  • flea is an overrated piece of shit

  • yeah i agree, he doesnt compare with the others

  • You guys are all a joke. no one is overrated.

It's like saying Grapes are the best fruit.

Oranges, Bananas, Apples, Plums, Cherries, kiwi etc. all have their 'flavor'.

If you like Grapes better than Bananas, GOOD for you. But puttin down cherry lovers is dumb, and a waste of time in my opinion.

If we ALL liked the same sh!t, did the same sh!t, where would 'innovation' come from?

    Definately not from YOU!

  • thats the best way anyones ever put it

you should post this on every bass thread on here

  • @UrbanUnderground damn dude, not gonna lie, that was an amazing response

  • @UrbanUnderground good use of fruit....seriously, that was pretty awesome

  • @UrbanUnderground have to say im more of a kiwi myself...

  • @UrbanUnderground Youre a fucking genius.... ha ha ha. Love the way you put this. Nice one

  • @UrbanUnderground Exactly!!!! That is PRECISELY the message that needs to be put out there to the music community!!!! good on you!!!! There is no such thing as bad music. it's all about opinion and different tastes.

  • @UrbanUnderground

i love all fruits, its all so deliciuos.

    both literally and metiforicly

  • @thewhitezombie666 Nice... I agree wholeheartedly :-)

  • @UrbanUnderground, shut up, nobody asked for an essay you fucking piece of shit cunt

  • @robojones I heart youtube comments.

  • @UrbanUnderground what if one fruit is more healthy than another one, wouldn't it be better? so than by process of elimination there has to be a BEST fruit.

  • @superdude13666 LOL cool comeback...

I get your premise, but how often does what is the most 'healthy' for you 'TASTE' the best? Therefore whatever is 'most healthy' couldn't be 'overall best' could it?

Apples are 'best' for the Teeth/Gums, Oranges are 'best' for the immune system, Grapes are 'best' for the digestive system, etc. etc.

So here we are back to what is 'best' for the individual..

Again this is just my 'Opinion', not any life altering event hahaha..

  • @UrbanUnderground I don't remember writing that, I had probably been smoking, lol

  • I think every great bass player out there has their 'advantages' and 'disadvantages'.

    IMHO.

I Love Claypool, but I consistently HATE his tone.

I love Jaco, but he got a lot of his style from Rocco Prestia (Tower of Power)

I love Stanley but he's not the best Slap/Thump guy

I love Victor but Victor doesn't have the history of Stanley.

    I love Bernard Edwards (Chic)

    I love Bootsy Collins

I love Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Mark King because to sing and play monster basslines isn't easy.

  • @UrbanUnderground thats just something people who know they are worse than the person they are being compared to say

  • @UrbanUnderground I goota argue that statement. You might like a certain "fruit" but take this into consideration. Some might need to be fed everyday, need pruning regularly and lots of attention to develope the flavor you want. Some only need to be fed once a week, no pruning and not much attention to grow into the desired flavor. That being said a true musician can look at the work and detail that leads up to the point of performance and say that someone is actually better then the other.

  • @scla6986 he means everything is made on opinions... even if someone things theres someone better than himself there can be still others that think his work his better than the other

  • @UrbanUnderground Btw Electric Apricots are the best fruit

  • @UrbanUnderground

    cherries are fucking godly.

the claypool of the fruit world for sure

  • @UrbanUnderground thats some profound shit right there. "But puttin down cherry lovers is dumb" so true.

  • I meant to say good not god

  • What type of dis-assiciate are you on? Flea is not "GOD". Les claypool has about 50 times more creative bones in his body. Flea is great, sure, but, FUCK, Claypool is Claypool;

    and you cannot beat Claypool.

  • i agree with hailmetal, flee is fast, but claypool is funky! (fucking funky) with way more style and skill, primus sucks, claypool all the way!

  • @hailmetal16...VICTOR WOOTEN!!! haha

  • @hailmetal16 In order: John Entwistle - (The Who), Les Claypool - (Primus), Geddy Lee - (Rush), Victor Wooten - (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones).

But as you said "Claypool is Claypool" Can't compare anyone with him, his style is one of a kind.

  • @hailmetal16 What if, in 50 years, I can? :B

  • @anonyrurz , i totally agree... what a cunt
