  • those don't run on gas do they?

  • Wooo~~! All the engines work very very hard. So that's what we say : "Life is not easy anyway!" thank you for sharing~~!

  • LOL great ending. I'm going to have to do some like that ; )

  • I often wonder what it'd be like to be Tommy Z for a day...

  • PURE POWER = TOMMYZ TRAINS >: )

  • Fantastic! I haven't read all of the comments, would take all night. Would you mind explaining all of the different exhausts on those locos? By the way, after a running session, can you find your way out of your train room, LOL.

  • @TrainHistorian Thanks. "O" Scale it what these are (just below "G")

  • Awsome. Excellent and impressive thanks for sharing!

  • That is idiotically fantastic -- huge smile on my face the whole time! Fabulous lash-up and layout (from what I see)! Congratulations! By the way, I just ordered #80 and can't wait for it to get here. Thanks for a great video!

  • That is an amazing smoke unit.

  • That is one amazing smoke unit.

  • Tom...is this "O" gauge the old American Flyer model train? I had an old American Flyer back in something like 1955 as a kid. My Dad and I had a small railroad. Seeing your neat stuff has bit me square in the butt and I am seriously looking at some sets, but I cant fully decide on a scale. I also love the "Z" size, so I am back and forth with myself. I am also retired now, so time is not a problem. I might have to fight the little woman for some room, but if I can get her in a head lock...I win.

  • @shooteraod LOL "You crack me up" ! uh boy ... "what scale" ... Just go with what "feels" right ! "O" and o27 are almost the same ... When we were little Am. Flyer was the Train to have ... "so much fun and realism" ! You and I are just "kids" at heart :-)

*Tell your wife hi, and say: "behind every good man's a great woman". :-)

  • Later (by 1969 or so) both were proven too costly to operate and were scraped.

Their "Tenders" more often then not, were from the early Challengers and Big Boy's . These particular units are among my favorites ... I'd guess their what: 3 1/2 - 4" tall ? ... and from the Front to back they measure about 40" in length. (the later unit about 30") Tom

  • *AGAIN, To this day, the record stands for that kind of power (they produced). The "aft" unit is a Propane Turbine and was just that "a propane driven Turbine" ... It too, proved to costly and was scraped. Later (by 1969 or so) both were proven too costly to operate and were scraped. Their "Tenders" more often then not, were from the early Challengers and Big Boy's . Thank's for the question and your time! "you made my day" :-)

    Tom

  • This is "O" Scale, (Quite a bit smaller the "G") *Your no "dummy" ... These (to this day) produced the GREATEST Tractive effort (to date), They were called "Gas Turbines" ... the ran on "Bunker Fuel" (a thick gooey type of "cheep" (at the time) oil. *AGAIN, To this day the record stands for that kind of power (they produced). The "aft" unit is a Propane Turbine ...and was just that "a propane driven Turbine" ... It too, proved to costly and was scraped. * I had to delete 3/4 of my reply !

  • Help a dummy out here...this engine is not electric, but running on gas? What is this scale...looks like G-scale to me, but I am guessing. I really dont know much about model trains, but I am seriously thinking about building myself a layout. Your layout is much nicer than the others I have seen on the TUBE.

  • @shooteraod I sent you a reply . Thank-You for the comment !

  • @TommyZTrains dont have aclue where it wnt...nothing in my message box...grrrrr. My email is my name @charter.net if that helps

  • @shooteraod Done. (I sent reply) can't understand why you didn't recieve it ? :-)

  • @TommyZTrains I dont have a clue either. My INBOX here on YOU TUBE is empty...grrrrr. Always something isnt it? My regular email is ShooterAoD@charter.net . Try that if you dont mind and I will keep poking around this YOU TUBE to try to find it. All my stuff that I currently have is also here under "ShooterAoD" if you want to look.

  • @shooteraod OK, I understand .... "I'm no expert" but "basically" all I wanted to say is here. (I'll check you out) thanks Tom

  • Thank you can you take a picture of the top of the engine so i can see how it looks when you get a chance i would love my friend to do this for me. My email address is

    vettetrains@aol.con

  • Great train just got the same set can you tell me how you made the 26 b united with the two extra stacks to smoke with the jet fan would appreciate. Robert

  • @candytrains Sure ! "To avoid the mess" ... I have all the turbines by MTH and filling them was a "challenge" .... what you see is a vent pipe, and a pipe "right down the throat" to the wick in the smoke pot. (I put these there) This allows me to fill the things up "right now" and avoid the mess. *normally I would have capped them off ... "I just like the effect" . I bought them to use, "their filthy and smoke to beat the band" !! ... "I love it" :-) thanks .

  • Can you tell me how many amps this was pulling

  • muy bueno!!!!!!! el final sobretodo!!!!!! jajajajaja...estas muerto....jajajajaajaj!!!!!!

  • @fepsa2003 THANK YOU !

  • ¿And it have a Gasoline engine?.

  • @raulox71 No, just 6 -20 volts AC currant. Smoke is a petroleum based liquid added to a "heater" with a blower fan ... Thank-you ! :-)

  • @TommyZTrains Aha. Ok.

  • My goodness, those trains models must be very expensive.

  • I would give my left nut for a set like that.

  • thats a lot of smoke is that o scale?

  • how did u get it to smoke is it a live steam? its really cool

  • @matchettkid Dump in Fluid ... "that's that" :-) It can be set to heavy, Med. Lt.

  • @TommyZTrains thats it? cool!

  • i bought a mth blue comet train set. it worked good till christmas time. it started to stay in gear and not go to neutral. luckaly it was fixable. all it was was a code that was hit wrong. i wonder why you have to his the bell and whistle button to do diff thing because if you hit it wrong you mess up the train.

  • Great layout and film. Got to agree with the little guys in the cab. I have an easier time keeping my prewar tinplate running than I do dealing with MTH when I have a problem, "clank, clank, clank!" I purchased my last MTH item 6 years ago and will never buy another.

    Chuck

  • enough smoke for ya?

  • I have an MTH UP Challenger that's always the hit of any train show I bring it to! But your locomotive combination makes my eyes water just watching all that smoke come out! BEAUTIFUL! And what a layout! Only complaint: I wish I could have seen all the train at least once -- looks like you have a lot of nice rolling stock!

    Thanks for posting this! :-)

  • that is, to my knowledge,not a veranda, i have a " veranda",and i looked it up,the veranda's had an open walk-way on both sides,your " veranda" does not.

I'm just saying, but it really does not matter, you have a nice layout!

  • @BILLYJO90 You are CORRECT Billy ! "I stand corrected" *The funny part ? "I knew that too" :-( Tom :-)

  • funny because i needed a new coupler for my old nw-2 and i had no problem with them.

  • @TheCSX1542 I sent 3 engines back that later were lost ... then (2.3 years later) ... they were replaced by 3 of a different kind. After that, out of 6 new Premier engines purchased ... I had to send 4 back. (defective)

After this, I was told after having purchased an ES-44-AC that I had to buy more memory for it as it came with and older board ... *I'm glad you had better luck! :-)

  • @TheCSX1542 Nothing "funny" .... You deserve no less!

YOU are the customer yes? ... Like you you, like me ... "like everyone", "Just fix the silly Train" ! (I'm glad yours was) *All this time / effort wasted (in this Media), eluding to a problem that doesn't exist? "dumb". The things easy... just fix my stuff, "and return it" DONE. :-)

  • why do you say don't buy mth

  • Cool, I wonder if they will make a well smoking model of the 2TE10 russian locomotive also? :)

  • jeese...did all the smoke set ur fire alarms off? lol. grat layout. absolutely gorgeous.

  • The Train in the back smokes like mine. Is that normal real slow?

The Front one look good. Is there something wrong with the smoking unit.

  • Needs a Ring job!LOL......

  • Great lay out. Where I live we have no trains but somehow Im so attracted by these machines. I have been looking at clips on YouTube and have to say yours is amazing. Soon Ill try to build a lay out but in HO. Full rating

  • @chvella ThankYou ! :-)

  • The UP Turbines were awesome Units for there time. The 1st Generation units produced 4500 hp. The next Generation "Big Blows" produce 6000 HP. You couldnt get that from diesels in those days. They could drag long freights between Cheyenne and Ogden, later to Council Bluffs. For the time period they were fantastic units for sure.

  • Hey there, great work... nice layout... and for sure amazing engine... the only thing I can't understand, whu u named this clip, dont buy mth? whats wrong with the mth, whats wrong with this engine... please leave me a msg... don't just comment back, i wanna understand whats wrong with it, since im planing to get one from MTH, o scale. thx...

  • @SemiDevilish

I never "just comment" ! See your inbox for detailed answer. :-) thanks OK?

  • waiting :)

  • answer me this one thing. they dont t use real gas....?. and the gas turbines were about as dumb an ideas as the M1000 or the S1 :D

  • @howardkevinm No, Believe it (fuel) was called bunker oil. Propane Turbines used Propane.

  • i was actually talking about your model lol

  • If you understand the Turbine Mechanics the fuel was heavy "Bunker C" fuel oil which was also used on later Oil Burning Steam locomotives. The fuel burned was to heat compressed air and it was forced into the turbines to spin them. Later they converted to a nr 6 oil. Heavier than diesel but easier to work with and did not require pre heating to flow.

  • I've been having my own problem with MTH I can't get an E-mail response from them, I do love the 2 locomotives I own of there's a UP 1989 Heritage HO and a UP Challenger also HO my real baby is a Tenshodo 2-8-8-0 Great Nothern Brass 85-300 that I own. Jap watchmakers makes some mean stuff.

  • Those smoke units are badass

  • Amazing! that was really a beautiful set...im 19 and just starting to get back into my trains I asked for the lionel el capitan for christmas it will be my first train since I was 7...my dad and I are just starting to re build the layout...any advice you have would be great!

  • @GunMetalJeep45 'advice ... hum ... Guess I'd go with a good STARTER SET.

See where that take you 1st. This Scale's expensive and you wanna be sure the "bug bites" good and hard! :-)

  • I see now, at the end of the video, that it is a Lionel guage. Great layout!!!

  • Is this an HO scale? I'm not usually taken back by a diesel style loco, but this one is very attractive, very appealing, very impressive. The smoke/exhaust is impressive. Is that the real sound emitted by the loco? If so, it's fantastic! Also, this is a wonderful layout. Looks great!!!

  • That was Amazing!

    I only have HO Scale.

This is a VERY Impressive Video!

My VERY First Time seeing one of these in action/demostration.

Thank you for sharing. 5 Stars!

  • Wow what a great video its the best I have seen on Youtube Great Job, love the smoke and the Locomotive!

  • I don't buy MTH products, they don't(I believe)produce anything in N scale. Very nice video clip by the way.

  • thanks very much Mike.

  • Is this a club layout or your personal layout?

  • @CarNutandTrainNut2 No Club, Just Me. :-)

Are their clubs? Can remember, but in a past tense...

  • I'd be worried your smoke detetors would go off!! But hey they look very very real with all that smoke. VERY authentic. Sorry to hear you've been having problems with them. I understand in real life they were about as loud as a 707.

  • wouldnt the veranda need a tender too?

  • Sure, It has one: "Full of propane" :-)

  • Why all the silly voiceovers on the sound units? Really couldn't stand hearing the same stuff over and over again!

  • They are of a time ....

  • OMG! I think an environmentalist got ran over making that last scene protesting :P oh well

  • I agree with you, Ill pay more for american built.

  • Me tooo . *But what?? Theirs nothing !! :-)

  • dude you rock.

  • Your back drops look really good!

  • I have some MTh Rail king 1 Guage I found after i called I broke a pentigraph on my GG1 they were friendly & helpful. I felt the part was a bit expensive but they were most helpful. I've never sent anything back to them for repair so i have nocomments to leave in that department.

  • I wanna see more of what its actually pulling too!

  • All issues aside, that is an impressive loco. I cant remember ever seeing anything put out that much smoke. Very cool...

  • Amazing, really enjoyed!! Best on YouTube !!

  • makes mine look like a play set. look at my vids

  • same here

  • mine is a play set

  • is that your layout? it sure is cool!!!

  • I have never owned a Lionel, but many people think that mth is more detailed and think that dcs is better than what you can run for lionel... I have 2 mth engines so far, and m going to stick with them

  • I was waiting for a Pugsley Adams train explosion.....mabee next time...lol.

  • Love that show!

  • i don't bother with big trains. I have bachmann n scale

  • Nothing wrong with that ! *whats your longest pull?

  • both Lionel and MTH are the best in model railroading

I wouldn't say which is better over the other

I've had friends with big train layouts

They say Lionel and MTH are the best

I've had a few trainsets , but because of financial thing going on now.. I can't buy anymore yet..

Someday.. I will have my vry own layout :)

  • Nice to have a choice !! ....

  • cool video! love the smoke!

  • is that the way the prototype would blow smoke because it almost looks as though the train caught fire with all that smoke.

  • Yes, They smoked profusely !

*At time's they had to be "flushed out" with Kerosene.

  • Mth makes superior products, and they don`t have to steal technical secrets.

  • Superior product means nothing without regard for your customer / Service Sir.

    I don`t get into the "secret`s" .... I`ll leave that to you.

  • how much smoke fluid does this thing use?!

  • Not as much as you`de think..... PER SESSION, About 30-40 "drop`s" .... My modification on Turbine unit allow`s for instant use after. *Some would "plug" fill / vent pipe`s after adding fluid...

(sometimes I do, but not on this piece).

  • Betcha have to wear a gas maks in your layout room!

  • :-) Na, I love smoke !

  • what scale is this

  • "O"

  • The last three things I bought didn't work out of the box...all the same issue, bad battery. Poor design if you ask me. The real railroad wouldn't accept that.

  • Tell them !! (MTH)

  • What was the main problem with MTH # 26 the smoker ?

  • really nothing with 26, But MANY other engines failed to run out of the box...

Best example: 4 outa the last 6 engines (all of the same kind) failed and had to be sent back.

    To me, that`s unacceptable.

  • UHHH.wow. really nice train. but alot of smoke!

  • Wow, I love trains and I love turbines. This is cool. thanks bro. If the turbine is in the second part of the locomotive, then whats in the front car???

  • That`s a "normal combustion" Diesel engine...

To this date, (The first engine, "B" unit) hold the record for the greatest tractive effort ever produced. *I`d HIGHLY recomm. the video:

"Turbines on the Wasatch" (look to the right)->

  • The first car is a turbine powered engine right??? Then what is the second???? It looks like a locomotive with no cabine. I assume the third car is the fuel tank. the fourth is just another locomotive helper. Whats the second one though????? It looks cool.

  • The 2nd is a "Propane Turbine" and the fuel car`s a propane tanker.

    These were the Veranda`s. THANK`S !! :-)

  • Great video however - there needs a correction. The locomotive you refer to as a 'Veranda' was not an actual Veranda unit but it is close. The Veranda turbines were the basic same body but with the covered walkways down the sides. That is where the term 'Veranda' came from. Too bad they don't make the turbine & double diesel units in HO scale.

  • I believe they are made in HO ... As for the name it says "Veranda" on the box.... but obviously your probably correct as well. :-)

For me the things pull, and look interesting... "beyond that I'm disinterested". Be well :-)

  • hell, when I need a big job done, I call on my HO scale santa fe SD40-2 by bachmann. now that thing PULLS!

oh, you might want a fan or something, lol.

  • OK, I'll remember that! :-)

  • I did a little reading. The first two cars are pemanently connected? That makes up 1 locomotive. the turbine was located in the second car only right??

  • Yes! "give that man a cigar" :-)

  • mike wolf is always suing people

  • Yes... reluctantly I do.... They make nice equip. but are total ass`s in regard to Service.

I don`t know what`s going to happen... As for the name, I`m not "computer savy" enough to change it! :(

  • The best Video on here!

  • with that amount of smoke,i would buy the christmas scent to have some benefit.lol.

  • If they`de sell by the gallon I will Dan !! :-) Merry Christmas. :-)

  • haha thanks.

  • i heard that these gave off so much heat it would fry a bird if it flew over

  • i have another question, is your engineer john wayne? lol

  • LOL , It sure sounds that way!! :-)

  • wow! you need a gas mask just to run it :P

  • Very interesting. Must have taken some work to do this.

Wanted to ask about real Gas Turbines. When I was very young only got a very short glimpse of a Turbine sitting at idle at Bailey Yard, North Platte, Nebraska. I remember it being very loud. Have looked everywhere for video showing actual sound of one in operation. Are your models a close approximation of the actual sound and smoke given off? Thanks.

  • everything you hear , is EXACTLY what the Prototype was... "They sounded like an absent AM radio"

*Click: "Turbines of the Wasatch" over on the right, this page for more. Thank`s :-)

  • Okay, great. Thanks.

The one I saw was not a Veranda model but the one with what looked like "glass windows" on the side of it. An earlier model I believe.

  • There are 2 vids available on Turbines by Pentrex. I heard one once in Wyoming, the Turbine itself had a very loud high pitched whine, and the exhaust sounded like a 737 at full throttle takeoff on a runway !

  • oh yeah i almost forgot, nice ending!

  • I must commend you on such a beautiful layout. This is one of the best i have seen, you dont see much O-scale anymore and it saddens me. Thank you for the post and i aspire to grow my little Lionel switchyard into a thriving empire such as yours!!

  • So very greatful! "thanks"! Know what you mean about "O" Gage, "their`s zero interest here as well".

  • I'm guessing this particular engine is the proto 1 earlier version? My 20-2615 doesn't have the little stacks in the B unit like yours...or is that a custom install?

  • Nope, it`s a P-2. I added a vent and fill tube as outlined in revision. otherwise it`s literally impossible to "fill", *this way it`s easy. Some "cap" these ports after fill... I can`t get enough smoke so I "cook" all the more

  • Brilliant video!! Liked all the smoke!!

  • Hi Tom

I read Nate's comments about MTH and I noticed you've taken off most of your videos from YouTube. I am real sorry to hear of your problems with MTH and I am sure that will "trickle down" to all of us. My consolation is the MTH service stations like Roundhouse South who complete repairs professionally and in a timely manner - should we give up on MTH if we still have that resource? I think Nates comments are valid but I have a lot of money in MTH too and it scares me

    Roger

  • I`d say no Roger, I`m simply "burned out" with these people and the lack of so much as a follow up (My most recent prob.) *It`s an arrogance unlike anything I`ve ever seen! This "can do no wrong" attitude? *In this economy? It`s gonna sink`em. "sad" :(

Go with what works for you ... Thanks OK ??

  • Thanks Nate

I understand and I have heard comments like these for the last year and a half from several sources. It does worry me a lot but I guess I will hang in there for now considering my investment, and continue to rely on my resources. Thanks so much for your honesty - I do appreciate the fact that you are candid.

    Roger

  • i like it from 2:33 onwards when there going that bit quicker, makes the smoke look realistic. Good vid

  • I just recommended Tony watch these. I think you and Tony Lash would get along famously.

    Tom Grimason

  • Tom, "He`s the reason I did this"! Dream is to someday meet him... "what a guy" :)

  • HOLY SMOKE!!!!!

  • LOVE IT when rooms so thick with fog "I can`t see"!!

Truly is life's greatest hi... :)

  • Oh man, I didn't know those were smokers. Nice.

  • Is this HO or O scale?

  • "O" Scale

  • man nice layout

  • Thank`s !! :-)

  • A definite tribute to how well MTH's smoke units work...tons better than Lionel!

  • Agree... I have Lionel`s Diecast Veranda...

Gese what a pile! It can hardly pull itself and only has two powered trucks!

    Take care! :-)

  • nice my wike would kill me if i got the and smoked up the house nice video

  • Hum... "I know, *scented smoke" ?? :)

*Put her on sometime and I`l win her over!

  • yeah i showed her this and she said "yeah wen i die its all yours to do with , but im gonna be liven a hell of a lot longer than you think" i just laughed at her. haha

  • :) We`ll work on it ....

  • WOW MTH has turbines now thats awesome!!!!

  • Hi, Yeah since about 96` ... Man they pull hard!

  • Great engines. Beautiful running shot. End Lol but true

  • Thanks Kyoshi, these are among my personal favorites. :-)

  • Sure appr. it! :-)

  • Very nice engines!!! i dont like O scale though

  • IC.... HO then?? :)

  • How does the smoke work? Is it steam or real smoke? Looks good anyway very nice layout.

  • Thankyou! *Simple, pour in smoke oil and that`s it.... "laboring" and volume is automatic.

MTH smokers "smoke" Lionel BIG time, (along with everything else) IMHO.

  • You would almost think the model was gas powered :) Did the real ones make that much smoke!!!

  • Yes, and MORE .... I`ve seen many archived clips on the UP Turbines. :)

  • Thats alot of smoke!

  • This should have been in "high life." lol

  • :) They were!
