The comments on the performances are really about direction and filming. Dench's brilliant performance was in extreme close up and she was the focus, Lapotaire's is in a cheaper stagey television BBC Shakespeare - The director has focussed on the storytelling and panic of the Gentlewoman and the Doctor rather than the psychology of the sleepwalker. Both decent choices. All good work.
Being a literary critic has nothing to do with good acting. She is expressing emotion on stage through movement and language, she's not writing a book.
Second of all, no matter how much education and training you have in any kind of acting style be it shakespeare, commedia, method or whatever, if an audience doesn't like your performance you're worthless.
The movement on stage is interesting, there are some strong moments that convey both her her guilt as well as her nervousness. I didn't care for the sing-song delivery of "the wife of fife". Still I think Judi Dench is well, the be all, end all.
I personally preferred the Judi Dench version of this...i liked the gentlewoman and doctor better too. i think lady macbeth didn't really suite the scene. but that's just my opinion.
I agree. I prefer Judi Dench's performance. Jane has some really good points though, she is more active in this scene and utilizes the "stage" a lot more. Judi's is just, I don't know, it's just frigging BRILLIANT! And the scream...o ma goodness! I was like, THAT is acting!!
not very convincing? most literary critics woul disagree with you-these are pepole who have been studying shakespear their entire lives. I as well think she's fantastic.
If you watch my music video you will see Jane's stronger moments. I personally think on stage her and Nicol would be mindblowing, I don't think their presence, fire, emotion and chemistry are showcased here, because the viewer is not close enough, an low budget BBC TV production won't come that close to it, but i think it was a good attempt:)
thanks for putting this up. I have a Shakespare play and I got stuck with playing lady macbeth in this scene and I was struggling with my character... Anyways, this helped heaps, so cheers! :)
VEry good acting I think. I like how the actress used pantamiming to signify her pushing Macbeth to be it really shows that this woman has lost her mind.
Thank you so much for posting these clips of the Scottish play. Could you please post the first scenes of the Lady - Act 1, scene v and I, vii? Thanks so much.

Many many better versions than this one...

I usually like Jane Lapotaire but she is a rubbish Lady Macbeth!
huwwilson650 3 years ago 2
This is why Shakespeare gets paid the big bucks. I haven't seen so much guilt since the end of Schindler's List!
WoundedEgo 3 years ago
She seems positively demented by her husband's bloody deeds and her own instigation of them.
Both Judi Dench and Jane Lapotaire do an excellent job on their different portrayals of Lady Macbeth!
