oh what ever happened to this group? the woman could sing like no other and the back vocals were great...and thier choice of songs were of the times we lived...well some of us lived. not all of use was around when moses was around.
This band never got their due respect due to them not being overally attractive nor youthful. It's a shame they produced feel-good music in a time that needed it the most.
The Spankers were so good! They had a distictive sound that will never be duplicated and Elaine's voice was golden. What a range and the words were about love. Happy never sounded so good!
Back in 2000 I bought my first computer, cost a lot then and the main reason was to increase my chances of hearing this song again, and maybe working out a way to get a copy for myself. This song oozes memories and feelings of the era in a very special undefinable way. What a fantastic sound!
@ddescvvb Agree with you. Thanks God for Youtube (and to uploaders like Nocaro too) that allows us to find good songs like this one. Your ALIEN friend.
why has Youtube taken down all the great Ptown takes on this group and Petula Clark as well? Is big, bad Google trying to stifle creative license with old songs. For god sakes who did this hurt?
I loved this band in the 1960s and had the pleasure to hear them in person at the Silver Nugget in North Las Vegas in the late 70s. I even got the chance to have a beer with Spanky and a couple of her band members when they took a break. They sounded as good as they did on Ed Sullivan.
Out of curiosity, are the "Barrow Gang' pictures album art, promo shots, what? Was it related to the fact that Bonnie and Clyde was in release at the time, as if I didn't know? Kinda gives an interesting meaning to "gangsta music', wouldn't you say?
@therealjoebloggs Everyone was going for "a look", and "Bonnie and Clyde" had been a HUGE hit in the US in the years before this shoot was done. There were traces of "Gangter (as opposed to "Gansta") Chic) in the culture at that time.
My friend Oz Bach played the bass on this song. He was one of the original members. I met him long after he had retired, had never heard of Spanky and Our Gang, and was amazed when he told me his story for a newspaper interview. The last time I saw him, he was beaten down by cancer, sitting in the back of his van. He died the night before George Carlin came to Asheville to do a benefit show for him. Oz was one of a kind.
Thanks for posting. They don't write songs like this anymore. I wish I could get an actual performance of this song. Brings back memories of better times.
I always feel great when I hear Spanky and Our Gang. Brings me back to a happy youth and what feels to be a better world even though it had its problems, you could still sing along with a smile!
Thank God for the sixties. That short ten years came and went quicker than a flash and before I could get here. But, the 1960's are among the top five decades of human history and it's development. I LOVE YOU ALL. SIMON4186
Good Lord !!! I forgot what a strong clear voice Spanky Macfarlane had. She really belts it out in this song. Brings back great memories.... they just dont make em like this anymore...thanks for the feel good Nocaro
@camboy1132 The answer to most of your question is in my notes attached to the song...Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane, the lead singer for Spanky & Our Gang, replaced Mama Cass Elliot for a few years after Cass died.
@ezramead I'm WITH you there!!!! The talent in their vocal harmonies nearly defies description! My channel of 700 playlists is about a century of this kind of music, with a list for every year since 1900. You'll catch this along with over a 100 more songs on my 1967 playlist and listen like you've stepped back in time. chuck

Never get tired listening to this song masterfully composed and sung; and if it is not sacrilegious, it can even make it to the Sunday Hymnal.

@Svette1T Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane, Judith Durham (The Seekers) and Beverly Bivens (We Five)...truly some sorely overlooked divas IMHO.
