I have the original cassette from the seventies. But, its been listened to so much that every song on it got tuned up a half step. I still listen to it.
Really fantastic slide show, superb artist, listening to him since the early days. No singular vocalist, or improviser, innovator holds a candle to Bowie. Whenever he combines with other world class artists it is enough to bring one to tears, of joy.
no, it sounds like the ramones long before the ramones even existed. do you talk like a music critic as well as write like one, that must be irritating
You know the beta comes out better on a stolen guitar. you're the blessed we're the spiders from Mars. What can you say about lyrics like those? Genius!
Probably the most underrated song on Spiders from Mars. I also use "tigers on Vaseline" in conversation to spice it up and shock even old ladies- who look at me and say "naughty boy" and then they take out the record and play it so the joke is on me.
@11xzxzxz I dont think so. Despite the song "Holy Holy" was recorded by a Bowie alone, the most 'famous' version is with the Spiders from Mars and its less famous than " Hang Onto Yourself".
@ferdinandsouz Not sure what we are disagreeing on? If you are saying the Spiders version is famous that doesn't necessarily meant it's not underrated anyway. Never heard Holy Holy
@11xzxzxz And the Bewley Brothers is probably Bowie's most underrated song; I've reconsidered and couldn't get into Holy Holy. Neil Diamond's Holly Holy is probably better.
Oh Mr. Bowie, little did you know what you would unleash upon the world with this spritely, lively tune. For a huge fat Valkyrie arose from this song, towering over the world with a cornucopia in her hand. And from this horn poured out nuclear missiles that became the roaring, snarling anarchy of the Ramones, the Leper Messiahs, and all of Punk Rock.
@Kubrickfan1 I recomend a good dose of " Jack Black " ( Oz slang ). i.e. Jack Daniel's Old No.7 Kentucky Bourbon whiskey. Works for me, well it did when i was 25. LoL.
@greene64 I'm sorry, but really? Why would you even say that? What the fuck is going through your mind that you think, "Oh yeah, I'm going to insult someone and no one will care." Smart thinking, buddy. Real clever.
The first time I ever heard this song was via a man who spent most of his life as a 'roadie'. He worked for Peter Frampton, Billy Idol, Prince, among others, and he also worked for Bowie for awhile. He would recover a stolen guitar for someone very close to me. Just recently he committed suicide.
This man is so beautiful although I hate seeing him in his drug days because he looks so fragile. You just want to hug and kiss him and make it all better. I love this song, one of my many favorite Bowie tunes. I LOVE the last picture of him, he's so photogenic.
Actually, "I Don't Want to Go Down to the Basement" is way closer to this song than "Loudmouth". The section from 0:08 to 0:18 in "I Don't Want to Go Down to the Basement", which is repeated several more times in the song, is exactly the same as the main riff in this song, except in a different key.
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was released in 1972, two years before the Ramones were conceived and four years before the Ramones' debut album.
The Ziggy period was interesting, but leap forward to Aladdin Sane - which is my favourite album - and he is at the height of his powers, and even more amazing, you have station to station, heroes and low to follow. Tin Machine was rubbish, but back with a bang with Hours and Thursday's Child and I will Survive, which he has done for the last forty-odd years. Brilliant artist!
some faves - loving the alien, jump, underground ....
Do you mean Joey? ;) Nobody can do a Mick like Mick does, but Joey's style was original and really, really good. I had the pleasure of having him hold my hand while the band performed a ballad, of all things, in 1979 at Randy's Rodeo, of all places!
Wow, do u remember which ballad? was it Baby I Love You or I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend? Any which way that's pretty cool. I meant Johnny Ramone doing Mick Ronson. But now I think he could have pulled it off.
it's only rock and roll! And yes darioshenry88, this was a precursor or blueprint for punk.
Absolutely! It was the latter.. "Hey little girl, I wanna be your boyfriend.." I was (and remain!) on cloud nine. It was among the most remarkable moments of my life. Coolest part was that we (my brother and I) were on the front page of the newspaper the next day (our photo.. Joey holding my hand, with me swooning; my brother pogo dancing! ;) I have a guitar pick, too, though I am not positive if it is bass guitar or regular guitar.. It says "Ramones" on it. Great times..
Sorry, I think you will find that Mick Ronson is, in fact, dead. So he can't be gay. He's dead. And by the way, that is very disrespectful to talk about the dead like that when thay can't post a reply on this board. Would you want this if you were dead?
Not that it matters to me, but Mick Ronson was very straight!..Bowie persuaded him to wear the makeup etc as he'd "get more girls"...I believe it worked! By the way Ronson was from Hull, a tough northern English town and he'd probably have punched you in the nose for that!
