  • I wasn't crying.. Then I saw my dad crying. My stone-cold old man. That sent me bawling like a baby..

  • another reason that this movie was a success, was because in the very beginning, the audience is emotionally tied to the main characters immediately. This movie has such an amazing musical score that really sets the tone of the moment. I loved this movie, and always will. but the directors and actors both did a great job in portraying the intended emotion.

  • i dont think kirk's past was ever seen before, this was a movie that told us all that, how kirk's father died, and how he was a proud captain of The Kelvin, how he would let people go in shuttles without him and sacrificed himself.... The Kelvin probaly diddent dent the romulan ship.... but it saved millions of other people from being attacked.

  • @TheAaron404 Actually, in the main timeline Kirk's father never died. But yeah, I think they handled that part pretty well as well as the whole movie. :)

  • See that? Generations? That is how you kill of a captain Kirk!

  • @aquapendulum NO, NOT THAT BRIDGE.

  • i tried not to cry but a lens flare shined in my eye.

    goddamnit, abrams

  • One of the best movie openings I've seen in a long time.

  • what idiot put star trek to this? this needs no picture!

    jk!

  • @MotOrieOrigDesMedia Your comment confuses me.

  • @PRIORITY60 it was a joke that could have been phrased better. sorry.

  • I want to write this out for a warm up, maybe a show

  • Why did this scene make you a little crying baby?

  • When I saw this, I couldn't believe I was crying in a Star Trek movie. Especially after I swore I would never watch Star Trek!

  • time 2 cry

  • 2:19 sounds just like LOST it's not even funny!

  • I didnt know John Williams like Star Trek ;) haha This guy will take over when John Williams passes... sad thing is... he already is ;)

  • @clix411 I remember way back when Giacchino was scoring the Medal of Honor series. Good to see him make the jump to the silver screen, he deserves it.

  • this movie is the reason i bought an hdtv and bluray player

  • George Kirk: What are we going to call him?

Winona Kirk: We could name him after your father.

George Kirk: Tiberius? You kidding me? No, that's the worst. Let's name him after your dad. Let's call him Jim.

Winona Kirk: Jim. OK, Jim it is.

George Kirk: Sweetheart, can you hear me?

    Winona Kirk: I hear you.

George Kirk: I love you so much. I love you.

  • "Tiberius? That's the worst!"

Even on the brink of death, you can tell he is the father of James T. Kirk.

  • A frown has never been a more fitting description. :(

  • This music and scene is so powerful, always brings a tear to me eye

  • Even just listening to the soundtrack makes me weepy. The opening of this movie was so perfect. There's no way to describe the amount of emotion they packed into it. They truly showed humanity at its best.

  • No other movie made me cry so quickly. Beautiful piece of art!

  • 0:42= :)

  • Only 2 dislikes. wow.

  • Yes. One of the best intro's i've seen. It's so dramatic and emotional.

Especially when the ship hit the Nerada.

  • Great song. Great movie. Oh yeah, IM A TEEN!!!!!

  • SOMEBODY DISLIKED THIS? Very funny Nero and Khan. Ha ha Im laughing so hard. <.<

  • why does the sound stop halfway through?

  • @midnightlupus It doesn't. This track is about 2:51 long. Just a bad upload.

  • there are two movies that brought a tear to my eye in the first 10 minutes... this and Up. (im a dude too)

  • @TGtonk holy shit ur my hero. I havent told anybody this but this scene and up were too much

  • @A5runner I'm a YouTube teen and I like this how can anyone not like this?

  • 35,000+ views and no dislikes... there must be no youtube teens around

  • @A5runner internet trolls don't appreciate great music.

  • REALLY good movie. JJ should have done the star wars prequels.

  • this is on a marine recruiting video as well if anyone noticed haha

  • in my opinion, this had a john williams feel

  • This track would have fit perfectly into LOST.

  • I feel like I am listening to lost!

  • I have to admit, it took everything in my not to cry like a little girl during this scene.

  • @A5runner I know that feel, bro. I cried hella hard in the theater!

  • @A5runner Same here. And I failed epicly.

  • I doubt there are many movies that can have you all filled with emotion, if not crying in the first 15min.... who would of thought it would be star trek???!!!!

    EPIC

  • @Clayton240183 besides that the film wasn't that emotional. I would love to see a "dark" "emotional" star trek series or movies i thought the dominion war could have done this but not really. I love that shit. Like when ensign Sito Died. <3

  • @Clayton240183 first 8 min of up?

  • this was so sad and beautiful in the film! This song is epic and so emotional! Every time I see this particular scene I nearly cry!

  • highly advanced..........

  • This song reminds me of the death of many people from a framed race of innocent beings. They are being killed due to one of their own being used to kill a peaceful senator who accidentally sealed their fate. This is from a future movie idea I have planned and it makes me sad.

  • You know, it's funny, Michael Giachinno composed music for two movies, which both came out the same year during that summer, and both contained two heart-wrenching intros: this movie and "Up".

Incidentally, those were the only two movies that came out that year that I actually liked.

Any movie + Michael Giachinno = Great Movie?

  • @TheWiseGuy784 Haha I'm pretty sure you just figured out the winning formula right there.

  • i love this song. It just perfectly encapsulates the feeling and emotion of kirk's heroic sacrifice. One of those movie scenes that always brings a tear to my eye.

  • this piece just reduces me to a blubbering baby - utter genius

  • I admit it, I cried like a baby the first 10-20 minutes of the movie. I swear to all starfleets that that was one of the most moving moments in movie history. This music was the icing on the cake. AND IT WASN'T EVEN THE ACTUAL MOVIE, just the prologue.

  • 2:17 to end is the best the best part of any sad song PERIOD.

  • This sounds EXACTLY like Lost....

because it's composed by the same composer! Boo Yah!

  • Michael Giacchino has come a long way in his career to write such poetry

  • I can't decide who's better-looking; James Kirk or his father.

  • @GoldenFlither15 my dick. get the fuck out of here .

  • @zomgwtfbbqbagel Um.. Ouch?

If you're implying that I'm watching the movie for the wrong reasons, you're wrong; I was always a huge fan of Star Trek growing up. If you're just being an ass, then never mind.

  • this song really makes me sad a little bit, but it sounds so beautiful, another one that sound like this is ice dance from Edward scissorhands, and deliver hope song, its songs like this that show just how devoted directors are to movies that they would hire the best of the best conductors to write pieces that let you feel exactly what they want you to feel. if you guys have anymore songs like this that you know of can you help me out and make a reply post, i really would appreciate it, thanks.

  • this is the song that'll play in my deathbed while i tell everyone a deep dark dramatic secret

  • @xXtexlonghornXx You ever listened to Two Steps from Hell?

  • 0:40 best part :D

  • You have to agree, MG can make the emotion in his music tangible to the listeners. You can feel it. You don't have to have seen the mocie to understand the emotion of this piece!

  • The sound of this music piece is a direct translation of the emotions of that scene.

  • The first couple minutes was liking watching a movie in itself; it was only for a few minutes, but I felt like I already knew the crew of the Kelvin for ages, including George Kirk.

  • so how about the first time i saw this movie; the first few scenes were so epic that when they fade to black on kirk's mother i thought the movie was over. then i see the opening title and im like, "holy shit, that was just the first few minutes."

  • shivers down my spine

  • Best description ever.

  • I was crying when this came on.... Bawling my EYES out! <3

  • @LightNeverFades me too... 3 times in the cinema... first time didn't have any tissues, i was leaking...

  • This is sooo beautiful that not only does my arms have goosebumps. But my ears get goosebumps as well! :) B-E-A-Utiful! ♥

  • I absolutely LOVED this scene. It was so emotional. :( QUICK! To Itunes!!!

  • Simply beautiful.

  • Damn straight no one dislikes this song =D

  • this is absolutely beautful.

those i loveee minor 2nd chords

  • Sounds just like LOST...

  • @momof5sonz same writer

  • @momof5sonz same composer =]

  • The soundtrack of star trek pretty much reflects the movie itself: Awesome beginning, the rest mediocre.

  • This music makes me shiver, and I nearly cried when I saw this part of the film, so emotional. Amazing piece

  • The most beautiful track of the whole film

  • what happened to the green pickle woman

  • This is instant inspiration, a true masterpiece. If one listens to this and is not motivated to take command of a starship, then they shouldn't be of this Universe.

  • This is an amazing piece of work <3 I REALLY paid attention to it when I went to my schools dance show, a friend of my girlfriend danced to this song with his girlfriend, it was too cute!

It makes you think, we need more music like this (:

  • The death of George Kirk was one of the most depressing scene I've seen in any movie.

  • The most amazing dissonance occurs at 2:41... it's hauntingly beautiful yet sounds eerily similar to the transporter sound effect. Perfect ending to this track.

  • ok, I'm crying just listening to the track ... ~_~

  • My favorite bit of the movie. The rest of it wasn't that impressing to me...but that one bit at the beginning convinced me it was a great film the moment I saw it.

  • This scene was quite unusual and very well done because it cause great sadness in for the viewer, despite there being very little character development at this stage. Bravo. Top Movie. Altho its sad I like the scene where you see the Kelvin on the collision course as its breaking up, Awesome

  • I agree. Every time I hear George say, "sweetheart... I'm not going to be there," I get a lump in my throat. It's definitely very sad, and the music perfectly captures the strength and heroism both spouses show as Winona struggles to bring baby Jim into the world while George makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect his wife, his child, and his crew.

And when it was over, I couldn't help but think that qualities like these, devotion and sacrifice, were what it truly means to be the Captain.

  • Turn up your speakers and go to 1:34. Words can scarcely describe the emotional weight of this particular moment in the film. As a composer, how do you capture the complexities of human emotion in the face of certain death? How do you communicate the sense of bittersweet peace that comes from sacrificing yourself for something you'll never know? This moment, and indeed all music, speaks directly to the soul. If art is the language of emotion, Giacchino is no doubt fluent. BEAUTY INCARNATE.

  • @b00gyman Well and truly said, the way you describe the sort of feeling this music evokes from you is poetic-like.

  • This scene with this music makes me cry every time... because of the situation, but mostly because of the music.

  • Spoilers*

George Kirk went on a crash collision course, and knew how much time he had left, to come up with a name for his son, and to tell his wife how much he loved her ='(

    then she saw him crash.

very emotional scene, and such a great song.

  • yeah like i remember i took a gamble with my money seeing a star trek movie as my last movie for my senior year in high school. i had know idea what i was up for, the first scene was amazing, and the rest before they go to rescue spoks planet got me realizing that all of my friends are separating to there life now. this song will always have me thinking of my last days in high school. (well the dramatic part at least)

  • What a role it must have been for the actress who played Mrs. Kirk:

Her firstborn is coming forth into her life as she's listening to her deajind, loving and courageous husband being propelled towards his certain death....and she cannnot save him.

  • The opening scene was just... orgasmic!!! The most epic opening musical score since Magnificent Seven in my opinion... I just saw this movie for the fourth time which is a history making event in my movie viewing experience.

  • Yeah, the first 10-15 minutes of the movie were ASTOUNDING. I thought Capt. Robau was pure badass, even if his situation was pretty hopeless, and George Kirk was a straight-up stud.

I've known a couple of people like that in real life, and they leave me feeling completely humbled and a little ashamed of myself.

  • is there anyway you could send me this song on sendspace??

  • Sendspace?

  • o nvm i found a way to get it off youtube. :)

  • how did you get it off youtube? cause i love this song :)

  • just go to zamzar . com and enter the youtube url, convert it to wmv or whichever u prefer and then they send you the link to download it. if u have more questions, u can pm me.

  • @tennisanyone32 You get it off of YouTube by... buying the track either on CD or via digital download (e.g. Amazon or iTunes). So, not from YouTube at all.

It never ceases to amaze me how people these days seem to think they have the right to take whatever music they want, whenever they want, for free.

  • @WhySoGr33n try mp3raid.com Always helps me out! Good luck! :-)

  • @WhySoGr33n what the heck is sendspace?

  • Well said..the opening scene of this film had me welled up and crying, and has done every time I've seen it since.

It's so well done...very sad and heroic. I've just listened to this twice, once thinking about the movie, once without, both bought me to tears. Beautiful x

  • @Kirok the beginning was quite impressive

  • Kickass song. I pretty much cried at this part of the movie.
