I have more respect to give to Danny Gatton than almost any other musician. Thankfully, there are quite a few more, both past and present, in his orbit.
Wow - what a fantastic lesson, on a gorgeous Tele, played by a guy who knows exactly what he's doing. So sorry I hadn't come across Danny Gatton before (we don't get out much in the UK), sounds he had a sad ending - such a shame, obviously a fantastic talent and seems a really really nice guy . Hope he's jamming up there with Buddy and Jimmy and all the other others.
I love how he just rifs Mystery Train. Danny Gatton to me... was the what a musician should be. You could tell the guy's technique was forged from years and years of gigging in bars.
almost makes me wanna cry when i watch this, as good as he was he shouldve ruled the earth,we need this kind of music and the kind of musician he was,
What an amazing talent! He played with such taste and his phrasing is to this day in my humble opinion, untouchable. It has always been very hard for me to except the fact the he is not with us anymore and of course the heart breaking reason why. I've always wished that had I been blessed to meet the man when he was alive, that I could have said something, anything to make him realize his own slef worth as a human being. God bless him and his family. Peace.
after i had purchased my first electric guitar(a butterscotch Telecaster)i was searching for instructions on how to learn to play a wide range of different guitarstyles and found the hotlicks videos with Danny...what a revealation!i was stunned and still am,what this giant of a guitar player was able to teach me even on video. He was not only one of the greatest players i've ever heard, but also a very good instructor,as we can see here for example. What a loss!
Great player and great teacher! He clearly has been working very hard on his technique for a long time. The slow examples are truly excellent, many players fail at this kind of slow tempi.
"if your echo gadget goes on the fritz just double pick it" JUST double pick it? holy shit. thats like saying if you run out of ammo just kill the armed insurgent with a buck knife.
Non-guitar players wouldn't know Claptons guitar from Merle Travis's guitar. Check out the numbers of viewing of each Danny Gatton video-several million have seen his work. I stand by my statement.
I believe Dannies guitar is a 1952 telecaster about as old and well worn as a guitar gets, worm by the maestro itself. After Eddie Van Halens guitar, this is probably the most recognized guitar in the world.
Nah man! Prince's purple guitar is more famous than either, and Jimmy page's double neck, angus youngs sg, Clap-strat, Eric johnson strat, List goes on. I'd say Lindsay buckingham's custom hybrid is more famous than the Danny Gatton tele.
Absolutely, Gatton is the benchmark for rockabilly guitar playing. One listen of "Nit' Pickin'" off his Unfinished Business album will testify to that.
@y2joylen rockabilly isnt about playing that exact in case u didnt know. the slapback effect is used in many different licks and phrases where it has to be done using a delay pedal. This is just e special lick where Gatton simulates a Delay pedal, sure it's cool, but its also pretty pointless.
@bLAStSuCaRTa Well seems like u dont know about rockabilly. I cited Brian setzer there and he is absolutely right that rockabilly is more messy playing, its part of the rockabilly idea. Same goes for rocknroll. Other than country its not about precise playing but more about transporting a special feeling to the audience when u are in the "flow". Dont know why u defend DG cause I didnt attack him at all.
that would be an 1953 Telecaster that has Joe Barden pickups in it. Not a relic guitar, the marks and scratches, rusted bridge, tuners, and missing paint are from sheer wear and tear playing. When you play a guitar every waking moment and every gig they tend to get that way.
@NreeKelBastardos I can not figure out he is such a humble guy he is a genius..Vince Gill says he is the best..He could be the guitar player around..Maybe he like to keep to himself...I have seen him with lots of people but he is not a name dropper...the guy is one of a kind fantastic...i agree with you nreek..Steve
I think I met him in Helena, AR around 1989. I may be mistaken. This heavy metal guy I knew brought me over to where he was staying for him to give me lessons. If anyone knows if Danny stayed in Helena, Ar let me know.
I love Danny but its hard enough to try to play along with this lesson without getting fustrated but then to have his guitar slightly out of tune will drive you nuts,
I could kiss the guy that posted this :) been staring at him play that for years Iknew basically what he was doing but not in that detail..hee hee hee
Danny Gatton is an incredible guitarist who I only got very familiar with after his death. I had heard about him but YouTube has definately increased my exposure. What impresses me most besides the obvious physical picking ability is his chords and the ability to produce a unique and tasteful combination of chords and rhythm(sometimes with only two or three note figures) that is so natural, at least for him. He is the best.
Play these clips over and over and enjoy them more each time - Danny was not only technically superb, musically brilliant and a great teacher but a really nice guy - no pretention. A "regular guy" as I believe the US term goes. Not an atom of the charlatan in him, His premature death was not only a loss to guitarists everywhere and music in general but to the human race.
@zthetha: You are so right.. Danny was just a regular guy who happened to be a genius on guitar. He liked hot-rodding cars as much as anything, and probably would have been just as happy wrenching on '57 Chevys as anything music related. I sure am sorry Danny didn't reach out to others when he was down in the dumps, instead of taking his own life. Maybe that way, he'd have know how much people cared about him. The music business is a tough life, and Danny was just one more casualty.
It's what Danny used to attach his 'magic dingus box' to. The box contained switches to operate his leslie cab, echoplex and phaser effects. He removed it when people assumed he was all about the effects and tricks. Really, as we now know, he had the magic in his hands!
I just dont want to learn the picking technique, I wanna play the way he`s doing it, Does anyone know what i need to practise. I been looking for videos like these for ages, And i finally found these, So please can anyone explain. Or does anyone where i can find other videos like these.?? Appreciate the one who tells me.

When he double picks this lick he's not doing it the same way slowly as he does it full speed. Watch carefully.
