My flapper in our ensuite toilet was allowing a small constant trickle of water through. I rescently replaced it with another flapper. It wasn't identicle to the old one but it still fit like a glove. The leak stopped but now we have to hold the flush handle down for a few seconds or it will close immediately and not allow the flush to complete. I tinkered with the chain length from the arm to the flapper but no luck. Any suggestions?
Turns out my chain length was ok. It seems that the a universal flapper is equipped with a ring as part of the mold which slides down the overflow tube as when you install it. This ring keeps tension on the arms of the flapper and doesn't allow them to pivot when flushed. The tension forces the flappper down unless you hold the flush handle down. I just simply cut each end of the ring where it attaches to the arms and it did the trick. Whats that annoying ring for anyhow? water saving maybe?
That happened to me once. I was cleaning a gutter, and my hands were filthy. I went into the bathroom to wash up, and to my surprise, the town had shut off the water. Luckily, the toilet tank was full, and i washed up there. When i told people about this auxiliary supply of water, they said i was weird, and that it was nasty to stick my hands in the back of the toilet.
Hey saw the toilt flap fix you are so cool Im in miami and im hooked. Im doing tile in a condo and the manager is given me a prob on the 1/4 inch cork sound proofing. He says I should get more ya but it costs allot more to have it installed.
Before my question, I'd like to thank you guys for putting such useful content on You Tube. It's appreciated.
The question: My toilet functionally works, but inside the reservoir tank, everything below water level is coated with a black film. The water in it is clear, but the tank full of a black residue.
I posted a video of it, but youtube won't let me link to it in this text response. It's easy to find if you click my name.
I for one would like to thank you for enriching the world with this content.
IT was first with writing that those that solve problems could first have there solutions recorded so that humanity could advance. By not having to continue to rediscover the same solution every time that problem came up..
you are creating solution that people can access at any time and from all around the world. Something to :) about.
You know the old saying about pleasing people........ No matter how I do a video, there is *always* a person who feels compelled to complain...... I can understand it if you are *paying* for the content, but holy smokes, you get it for free. (still shaking head as he goes to the next comment....) You gotta love YouTube for exposing every aspect of humanity. Thank you Chad and Steve!
It isn't the same water which you drink if you have got a rainwater circuit which you use for flushing the toilet etc. which gets collected from the gutters. It is starting to be introduced in the UK because of price increases.
If you are on city water, usually there is chloramine or chlorine dioxide in your water. But I believe the toilet tank gets contaminated from the mold that grows in the tank above the water line. If you use untreated well water, tank water is stagant water=lots of bacteria. In an emergency, I think you could treat either type of toilet tank water with halazone tablets or boil it to get drinking water.
your body is 10 trillion human cells and about 100 trillion microbes. If you removed the 100 trillion microbes from yourself you'd most likely die. Only a few types of microbes are bad. The anti-bacterial mind set is helpfull when a person is sick.
I'd point out that taking a young child to say a farm to play with the Animals and inhale powered fecal mater and all the microbes in such dust has been shown to significantly lower asthma and allergies.

Wow Tim, different format but very thorough.. It was basicly step by step, now what about loosing the chain or adjusting the height of the chain or bending that rod that connects to the ball, some turn in and out..?
im becoming a plumber in canada well on my way to become one, starting apprenticeship in january, these videos are pretty interesting. cant hurt to get an early start. keep up the good work!
Good for you! Plumbers are very important, and help keep people healthy. I am still a licensed master plumber, and do miss the day-to-day work. Plumbing is a fascinating and rewarding profession. You will do well with your great attitude.
Amazing video. Very helpful all around. Thank you for helping me fix my toilet. I love how you two solved the problem together on video! How'd you do that?
Three cameras rolling at the same time separated by 2,000 miles. Add to that an excellent post-production person who uses Final Cut Pro. In other words, nothing to it........ :-)
It sounded like the solution might be a little different if you have a toilet with a large, floating ball as opposed to the cylinder style system like Paul had. If so, could you post a follow-up video on how to fix the ball-type toilets? Thanks! Love the channel!
Great work on the video. At first, I cringed when I saw that it was nearly 10 minutes, but it was so sharp, useful and entertaining that the time flew by.
Hello, Mr. Carter! I enjoy your tips very much! I think I could've saved some Brazilian reais if I had watched this video before. The first plumber didn't do the job correctly, so I had to call another one. If I only knew that it was so easy to fix, I would've done it myself.
Sigh! Man is a huge crutch word for me. I also say "Dude" too much. And then there is that arm-waving motion. If you watch some of my other work, I also say "now" and "okay" way too many times. All crutch words....those are words when your brain can't think of the next thing to say. I cringe when I look at some of my older videos as well as this one! :-(

The chain is still too long. Keep tinkering.

Can you suggest a chemical to clean this? Thanks!

Try adding a cup of chlorine bleach and letting it soak for an hour. Then use a toilet brush on a spot you can scrub. It should work.

Good info, BUT the cutsy over- the- phone BS is a waste of time and a distraction.
Fluidmaster has the best products. They completely rule the toilet repair parts business.

Solution is the same. Paul's flapper valve was worn out. I will be doing a video very soon showing you how to replace the fill valve.
