@johnbirch1973 Moore was 47 at time of this fight and in his prime had been the light heavyweight champ! He had won this at 39! He's better known for being in Foreman's corner during "Rumble in the Jungle" but he was also Ali's first pro trainer, before Dundee took charge!

I have read books which state that his date was eventually determined by his boxing manager to get a license! The New World Encyclopedia say he was born between 1913 and 1916, so if u were at the birth with his mother in labour then I must accept what u say! Ali although one of the greats, never would of beat a Joe Louis, even on his best day. Joe was a clever boxer, and a powerful puncher with either hand, plus had the courage of lion. Just my opinion.
Archie Moore is the complete opposite of Mayweather. Archie did not duck anyone, he took risks fighting bigger and much younger rivals, and it took forever for promoters to offer him championship fights. So you cannot argue that a boxer that has never lost is better than one who has fought more than 100 fights.
@fightnatic Actually he lied about his birth date, as almost all the fighters did back then so they could keep their careers going longer. My grandfather met Archie back in 1958. Thanks for the comment though. The boxing associatiions were very loose and did what they could to promote their fighters.

Interestingly, Ali did not like Moore because Moore who trained him before, wanted to change his fighting style and wanted to make him clean up the gym! i've seen him fight a guy who knocked him down 7Xs in the 1st round. he was hurt BAD & kept getting up. he later knocked the guy out (8-10 rd ?). he fought into his' 50s. mind you his' 50s. and had more fights than any other boxer. he retired will all his' facilities.
Yup Len has the most, off the top of my head Harry Greb, Sam Langford and Willy Pep had more aswell. None of them fought into their 50's though :o that is pretty extraordinary lol.

This was an amazing accomplishment for Archie Moore to compete at this level with one of the greatest boxers of all time. Dude was 49 years old against a 20 or 21 year old top 5 all-time champion. Moore was 42 yrs old when he fought the Rock. He won the LHW title at age 39 and held it for about 8 years. At age 48 he re-took the LHW title and if you think he had no chin, you are looking at the wrong guy.

The "GREAT ONE" purchased a bldg at 30th & Market St's and use the money to open his restaurant & lounge. Most avoided fighter in history, the Great Archie Moore!

Ali although one of the greats, never would of beat a Joe Louis, even on his best day. Joe was a clever boxer, and a powerful puncher with either hand, plus had the courage of lion. Just my opinion.

Archie Moore is the complete opposite of Mayweather. Archie did not duck anyone, he took risks fighting bigger and much younger rivals, and it took forever for promoters to offer him championship fights. So you cannot argue that a boxer that has never lost is better than one who has fought more than 100 fights.

@fightnatic Actually he lied about his birth date, as almost all the fighters did back then so they could keep their careers going longer. My grandfather met Archie back in 1958. Thanks for the comment though. The boxing associatiions were very loose and did what they could to promote their fighters.

Archie Moore was no more a mongoose in this fight. Interestingly, Ali did not like Moore because Moore who trained him before, wanted to change his fighting style and wanted to make him clean up the gym! A young and proud Ali wouldn't do no janitor's work... Yeah, he is really old in this fight but don't even think for second that a young and prime Archie Moore could beat a prime Ali!

i've seen him fight a guy who knocked him down 7Xs in the 1st round. he was hurt BAD & kept getting up. he later knocked the guy out (8-10 rd ?). he fought into his' 50s. mind you his' 50s. and had more fights than any other boxer. he retired will all his' facilities.

Neither Ali or Moore wanted this fight. Ali needed a "name" to beat and Archie needed the money.
Moore said that Ali kept punching him on top of the head and the cumulative effect made him "crazy".
He also said "Ali beats Louis" four out of five.
It's an interesting fight but Archie was shot by then.

This was an amazing accomplishment for Archie Moore to compete at this level with one of the greatest boxers of all time. Dude was 49 years old against a 20 or 21 year old top 5 all-time champion. It's too bad that Archie had to fight guys much bigger and younger. This guy was a true warrior and the only guy to face Ali and Marciano.

Moore had to make 175 to be light HW, but when he fought Patterson for the HW title, he weighed in at like 189, not much fat, either. (I watched the fight as it unfolded) He fought lots as a HW

Believe it or not, Moore wanted to teach Ali a few boxing techniques. Moore wanted to teach him the basic's of boxing.
Ali didnt want to learn so he went his own way.
Ali went on to do great things and it seemed he could do better without those things that moore wanted to teach.
Moore was gonna teach Ali the thing he could use when those old legs gave up.
Ali could of done so much more had he listen to the old mongoose.
Anyways, what i wanted to say is that Ali now has parkinsons.

Moore looked like a wallowing fat pig in this fight. He never had a jaw that could compete with heavyweights; Marciano hit him with arm punches and knocked him silly. And he was old. Both of those he couldn't change. But his conditioning was embarrassing. He looked like a pig.

Marciano knocked him down with arm punches and Moore buckled. Ali wasn't a heavy puncher either, and Moore could take none of it.
He was skilled, smart and very experienced. He didn't have a chin against heavyweights.

Moore was 42 yrs old when he fought the Rock. He won the LHW title at age 39 and held it for about 8 years. At age 48 he re-took the LHW title and if you think he had no chin, you are looking at the wrong guy.
I never said Ali was a hard hitter, although he had a super jab and a good fast right hand. He could lead with it and not get caught.
