Many artists, in all realms of culture, are hated or ignored during their lifetimes. I generally detest the Oscar winning films and Grammy winning artists. Give me innovation, pioneers, creative geniuses that the masses are slow to recognize. You can keep all your Britney Spears, Justin Biebers, and Foo Fighters.

"record sales are an eternal measurement of musical value." Then why are the critics and musical peers wrong when they rave about obscure artists? Record sales are based on availability, hype, bribes, imitation, safety, familiarity. Often the bestselling music is forgotten and the poor selling music is exalted. Many times kids buy the records their friends are buying or because the band looks handsome or pretty or shocking. How many records did Mozart sell?
