Decided to try this out and it was a complete nightmare. Was really buggy on my hardware which is only 12months old. graphics (5870) was really jittery even with proper drivers. I went to wipe the partitions in the end as I decided I didnt like it and it completly borked my windows Boot. fixmbr, fixboot, export BCD and rebuild nothing. had to run my os from bootloader on windows cd for a few days before reinstalling windows to fix it. complete disaster.

@cjschrisAU Use Ubuntu then if you like unity. One of the main reasons Mint is getting so much traction is because people want to get away from Ubuntus new shitty interface.
a) I've used both and I feel its about the same in terms of system resources. I feel like ubuntu might have a bit more bloat than mint, but that is just my opinion.
b) The only thing you might want to look out for would be network drivers, I've had issues with dell laptops and wireless nic drivers in the past (not as much now). I would always use the proprietary drivers for whichever wireless NIC you have. Plenty of tuts on the web.
Hmm.. thanks for the video, I might switch to mint soon. Since ubuntu 11.10 launched - I switched to xfce, to get away from unity&gnome 3, but I can't say I'm too happy with it. It just feels... different, and I can't get used to it.
@r4zpu71n hey man, just a quick update on my comment. I decided to try different distros on my netbook, for some reason mint wouldn't boot at all (no matter what I install it with - unetbootin, startup disc creator, you name it) so I used MultiSystem to make a bootable flash with multiple distros. So far I stopped on Xubuntu 11.10 (full install, while on desktop I use the Ubuntu 11.10 install with Xfce put on top of it). Works great and fast, can even view 720p vids (hp mini, 1,6ghz/1gb/250gb)
@KriegKadaver Tried U-11.10, then avoided Unity, like you did. Unity took up much disk space/ slow-downs, so tried to remove it. Crashed, so now using Xubuntu.
@grey0powerlessnesss I just "sudo apt-get install xfce" on Ubuntu, and then switched user and selected Xfce as my desktop. For some reason Xubuntu (the distro package) has this glitch where I can't transfer sounds through HDMI cable, tho it works perfectly on regular Ubuntu.
@KriegKadaver Check the audio settings. I have a choice of 3 drivers. The latest one does not work, but the older one works better than the generic driver.
On my HP PAVVY-7 notebook, I'm running any of the choice of 2 x W7-64 & a UBUNTU-original(32). As well, I have W-XP(64), 3 x XUBUNTUs (64 & 32bit), Utltimate-32 (a Ubuntu derivate). I'll publish how to this later. It's very easy.
@6:50 that's me! Its friday night, 11:30pm, just upgraded from natty to oneiric. Unhappy with both (was on hardy before) Time to switch to mint. Thanks for the review!
i have windows 7 x64 and i m wondering if linux supports all this free stuff and games that windows support.. what is mint more than windows except price?
@superjoker6 Of-course not! Games for linux are amateurish, usually clones of older windows games. The same story with the apps: very few and the quality is questionable.
There is WINE but its hard to use, configure and has a lot of incompatibilities with newer windows software.
Also it will take you a while to learn how linux works (its a lot different then windows). And there are so many distros, software packages types, repositories, dependencies etc.
@superjoker6 Agree with earlier comment to this. My W7-64 Ultimate keeps crashing now ... never used to - so ... much debugging ahead.
In Ubuntu based distros: v.fast boot, restart, close. Rare crashes, quicker recovery. Easy & quick to re-insttall. Limited apps in Linux, with limited powers. But my fav. apps work on both op systems: Google-based & Opera web browsers.
I use Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu 11.04 right now and it's all great. I'm thinking though that I might switch to Mint 12 when it comes out. I haven't used Mint since 8 in a Live CD once. What's it like installing an application? Is it the same thing? Is there something the same as the Software Center? Also, to install an application you download, is it pretty much the same as Ubuntu? I really like how Mint 11 here looks and I'm getting a bit tired of Unity here.
@A135S4656 Yup, it works essentially the same way that Ubuntu does. Download and install apps through the Software Manager (app store type thing) or download .deb files and double click to install. Simple and elegant.
my friends who only use computer for web surfing watching movies emails and other stuff all have viruses and slow laptops, I put this Linux mint onto them and they happy and never come back with problem again - make old laptop turn into new life,
open office is more then good enough, only thing is don't know how to connect ipod and itunes for them I looked but I not so smart at this. Its a shame coz me and my friends well all use ipods, we like ipods and this is only thing mint can't do for us
LInux mint is JUST as much a joke as most all other linux distros are...its fragmented, its buggy as heck and its not mainstream. By the way, your precious MINT distro uses MONO, yeah the disease AND the bloated language and apps written in it , and all that bloat is IN mint in spades, just like bloated and patent loving ubuntu, and any other distro that goes against the wise instruction of richard stallman , groklaw and others who are abandoning mono due to its threats. Google and learn.
@inhuman0id Hi and thanks for responding. I use Windows 7 64bit at the moment. I must rely on certain games ( friends whom I coop with nearly constantly ) and apps , so numerous to mention for which wine is not an option. For those who have no such needs, linux could be an option,'but' given that Mint ignores the clear and smart warnings of a decent contributor in RIchard Stallman and goes out and thumbs its nose at him when solid alternatives exist to all mono apps, means something is fishy.
@inhuman0id Ridiculous as in too hard on resources or what did you mean..or great fun maybe ;) Anyway, Idont know about that yet, as I dont have a gpu that can utilize DX11,,I think my 8800GTX only goes as far as 10. ENjoy ;)
I use windows 7 64bit, not because im in love with it, but because it just works for everything. I don't need a smart alec OS to tell me that the nvidia driver I want/'need' to use isn't open source, I know that already. Linux should be smart enough to allow you to install it right from the website, like windows is. It's a shame linux is so geeky, but there you go. However..I admire linux FOR being open source, but given what games/apps I need, can't use it much.
@leebojammin Do you mean LMDE? Linux Mint Debian Edition. Then I agree with you. My last memories of the Ubuntu-based version were bad, so now I'm on Xubuntu-32-pae. I can run 64 bit, but can't see why I should.
@grey0powerlessnesss , I mean any linux mint version, because while I'd love to try it, I can not allow myself to use any distro that uses mono out of the box. I do not mind it IN repo's, but out of box aint no way jose, as thats putting mono in the hands of unsuspecting users who may know squat about the issue, so it perpetuates the myth that its 'safe',unlike the clarity richard stallman brings us ( and me, and others), along with groklaw.
I will probably get flamed for this, but what is the learning curve for learning this after using Windows for so long... I am thinking of trying it, but am a little nervous about it.
@seventhson73 No worries, Linux Mint was the first OS I ever tried, and the biggest learning curve was only the way you install applications through the Software Manager instead of downloading .exe's. Everything else was very simple, and the Mint Team have a great User Guide that really gets you well acquainted with the way everything works. It's very, very similar to Windows (esp. XP) and I personally found the learning curve very gentle. Hope that helps. :-)
@seventhson73 it fantastic. i took windows vista off and put this on. its alot quicker and easier and saves alot of time when shutting down and booting up
@seventhson73 Keep away from RPM-based Linux - trouble installing apps for novices. Ubuntu derivatives are ok. But I often need to 'DOS-BOX' the Linux command line:
@grey0powerlessnesss ok, before I get flamed for being a noob... I have pretty much given up on linux or at least Kubuntu. For everyday use like internet and email it is great until I open facebook, then it lags my 6 gig/ dual core system. Nothing I have "installed" works even native programs. Now what is RPM-based linux???
@seventhson73 Red Hat. The main competition to Debian. These are the 2 major distros in Linux. Most other distros are based on these v. serious SERVER-ONLY distros. These 2 geek-only distros try to pretend to be desktop use, but their very conservative, SECURITy-only bias makes them afraid of innovation.
All the true desktop distros are based from these 2 very commercial parents. DISTROWATCH & Wikipedia are dominated by anti-open geeks: heavy end-users are not to tell the truth.
There are millions and millions of XP and ME desktop PCs that are starting to show their age. I like to think that they will all eventually be running linux. The speed difference between XP and Peppermint 2 is like night and day
@superulloabrothers you will regret installing gnome3 and unit. they equally suck. so far Ubuntu 10.10 is stable and more usable for pro linux users. and mint is as good as it was always because they are stiil with gnome2.x.
i tried almost all latest distro's . Bodhi is better in new distro's.
@Shakeitupyes Linux Mint releases a variety of different desktops with each version release. They have the "Main" Edition which is Gnome (this one), and a separate KDE, LXDE, Xfce versions as well. It's the same operating system, just different software providing the desktop environment. Hope that helps... :-)
going to give this a shot. I gave unity a few months and it just sucks. it's ok on netbooks but it really slows down production on the desktop. been using ubuntu since 5.10. sad day....
so i'm just starting to hear more on Mint since it seems to be a smaller crowd (kinda like Arch linux), do they have their own environment or is it in a package like KDE, Gnome, Xfce? (you went pretty quick around 3:40..) and do you have to install packages? lastly, is Mint light or is a resource hog like Kubuntu?
@SlackintoshHD Okay, Mint started out small, but it's the second most popular distro on distrowatch today. 2: by default, Mint uses Gnome 2.32 which is quite resource efficient and uses about 300 mb Ram while web browsing and listening to music. You don't have to install packages...just the base iso covers most of you needs with codecs, drivers, office suite, photo editing etc, just make sure you download the 'Main DVD' iso and you'll be fine. Apps like skype, picasa etc are avail. hope it helps
@SlackintoshHD I have to be honest when i say that the Mint crowd is way bigger than Arch. MInt has been #2 on distrowatch for the last 4 years where Arch has always sat between 6 and 10, Mint comes way more complete, and is now compatible with Debian repos which are the most complete of any distro, not to mention a lot more pleasing to look at and a lot less BS to deal with..... oh and no its not a resource pig.
@pspheaven your a noob, why are some "old school" Linux users hell bent on "if you can't use terminal your a noob" seriously shut up I like my distro easy to use and I don't want to have to use terminal to fix or install things. and we can't change the fact it's pre-configured and loaded with tons of useful applications, god forbid they install everyday stuff with the distro, oh my were all noobs, oh and the first thing I do when I install, is configure compiz. so fuck off troll no one likes yo
@Jdwill1014 You can run some .exe files in either of those if you install 'wine' (a Windows compatibility layer) from the Software Manager. Both Mint and Ubuntu are nice, but Mint makes more sense to someone used to WinXP and Ubuntu to Mac or Win7. Hope that helps... :-)
@InfinitelyGalactic yeah i know about wine i had to use ubuntu for a month cause my vista crashed but now im running windows 7 ultamte and mint in daul boot
@pspheaven It's Ubuntu for beginners, because you do not need terminal. Noob sounds a bit negative. Mint is the best distro I have tried, though not the fastest. I which they could make it fast as LXDE.
@pspheaven You need the terminal, but not as often which is the point... and most of the stuff people want is already installed and pre-configured....
It's not for beginners, ubuntu is for beginners. mint is for noobs and people too lazy to configure things like compiz themselves...
@pspheaven you a retard, none of these new distros really need anything done in the terminal and for the most part you can find DEB. packages for everything, stop making it sound like you have to have some SKILLS to run ANY of these systems.....Go compile a Gentoo system then come back and talk shit moron. You are a noob no matter how long you have been running ANYTHING linux.
@pspheaven Take your medicine son, stop posting about shit you dont know about, and if you are going to post stop contraDICKting yourself.....I cant believe you think your post deserve any type of recognition other than what it has gotten from me, And your calling ME egotistical? Stick to things you know like , Tom and Jerry, Mr. Rogers, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. sleep tight princess.
I'm thinking of switching over from Windows 7 to Linux. I don't have loads of experience using computers nor can I program beyond a basic level, and I was wondering if it was worth it???
yes it is,windows sucks, you might miss a few of your old applications if you use your windows for alot of things but you can use wine and it should work with your windows applications,so have fun:)
@planbsk84eva No need to buy a Mac. Most PCs that can run Ubuntu can also run Hackintosh. Hackintosh is far more versatile & powerful than any brand-name "Mac".
Thanks for the video. I finally switched over from Windows to Linux and I couldn't be happier with this OS. Do you know of any way, offhand, to move the start task bar from the bottom to the top of the screen?
@qtutoringhelps Yup...just right click an empty space on the bar, click 'Properties' and select the 'screen position' of your choice! Glad to hear it's working well for you! :-)
Great vid! Please excuse my rant but for goodness sake why is partitioning so effing complex! In my perfect world there'd be a default partition setup so I don't wipe windows and my boot partition so that I don't need to sell a kidney for a new windows prog. Something like boot disk-shall I do it for you?-yes-cup of tea! You Linux folk are so friendly and patient tell me on what street corner can I buy what you're on? Yes it's beyond me I admit it! 3gb ram 250hdd- full install- help!
@TheGubernot Problem solved I feel less stupid got rid of 7 installed pardus 2011 it did it all for me lovely cuppa ahhh. Btw sf Go raibh maith agat x.
@InfinitelyGalactic hi galactic, so I would be really appreciated if you answer my question:
I'm pretty new to linux (about 4/5 months on ubuntu) and loved the experience, but for some reason I traded to a windows for about a year ago, and now, I want to get a new linux distro. What do you recommend to me? Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSuse, fedora, or any other distro?
@MrRafomaniac If you would like an elegant system that's similar to Windows in the way it works, check out Linux Mint (if you're used to XP) or Zorin OS (if you're used to Win7). If you'd like a system that works very well and simply, but does work differently, I'd go with Ubuntu 11.04. Hope that helps, good luck! :-)
@baracuda68 That's completely understandable, sorry for not being clear. Ubuntu 11.04 (Linux Mint's 'parent') is based on the 'Unity' interface, and Fedora 15 is based on Gnome 3.0. What I meant by 2-3-2 is that Linux Mint 11 is based upon the tried and true, older Gnome version 2.32 which is what the users of Linux Mint wanted. The Linux Mint team stuck with an older interface rather than adopting a new one like most other distros were doing. Good question.
@InfinitelyGalactic Hey, I want to ask. as i am going to the university soon i am going to study Computer Software programming, should i get this software or should i stick to microsofts windows?
I am new to Linux. But from what i can tell so far, Mint is basically the same thing as Ubuntu as far as code goes. You can run Ubuntu software on Mint....... Mint is defiantly more fun to use i think.
This is one of my favorite OS's. Right next to it, Ubuntu 10.10. Two really great Linux OS's. Any OS that is based on Debian and runs GNOME 2 is really amazing to me, I'm not much of a fan of the newer versions of Ubuntu (11) or GNOME 3. Not entirely sure where they are going with these new looking desktop environments.
@hotterthanyourmommy like you i would like to know where ubuntu is going with the new desktop environment and thought maybe that ubuntu is trying to appeal to a new audience and stay ahead of windows for once not real sure though but sure sounds nice if they want to try newer things in the desktop enviroments just my thoughts on this i have never tried linux mint but heard alot about it similiar i think to ubuntu 10.10 so i might not ever try linux mint i do want to try ubuntu 11.04 looks great
@hotterthanyourmommy yeah when i first tried ubuntu 11.04 i had a few crashes but after a couple of updates it quit crashing now got it running top-notch even got compiz running smooth as far as the OS it doesn't crash but some of the applications have some problems crashing but that's true on any system
thx, it realy helped me as i want to know about linux mint because it seems to be quite good these days and can compare quite well to newer Windows and Mac OSes. I might soon buy one.
can i play games on linux?(like cod mw2 , mw3 etc, games playable also on windows)

2 questions:
a) between ubuntu 11.10 and mint 11 which one utilizes less system resource ?

b) planning to install linux OS [caught betwn ubuntu vs. mint] on dell laptop, any known issues?

@r4zpu71n hey man, just a quick update on my comment. I decided to try different distros on my netbook, for some reason mint wouldn't boot at all (no matter what I install it with - unetbootin, startup disc creator, you name it) so I used MultiSystem to make a bootable flash with multiple distros. So far I stopped on Xubuntu 11.10 (full install, while on desktop I use the Ubuntu 11.10 install with Xfce put on top of it). Works great and fast, can even view 720p vids (hp mini, 1,6ghz/1gb/250gb)
KriegKadaver 4 months ago
@KriegKadaver Tried U-11.10, then avoided Unity, like you did. Unity took up much disk space/ slow-downs, so tried to remove it. Crashed, so now using Xubuntu.
grey0powerlessnesss 3 months ago
@grey0powerlessnesss I just "sudo apt-get install xfce" on Ubuntu, and then switched user and selected Xfce as my desktop. For some reason Xubuntu (the distro package) has this glitch where I can't transfer sounds through HDMI cable, tho it works perfectly on regular Ubuntu.
KriegKadaver 3 months ago
@KriegKadaver Check the audio settings. I have a choice of 3 drivers. The latest one does not work, but the older one works better than the generic driver.
On my HP PAVVY-7 notebook, I'm running any of the choice of 2 x W7-64 & a UBUNTU-original(32). As well, I have W-XP(64), 3 x XUBUNTUs (64 & 32bit), Utltimate-32 (a Ubuntu derivate). I'll publish how to this later. It's very easy.

i have windows 7 x64 and i m wondering if linux supports all this free stuff and games that windows support.. what is mint more than windows except price?
superjoker6 5 months ago
@superjoker6 Of-course not! Games for linux are amateurish, usually clones of older windows games. The same story with the apps: very few and the quality is questionable.
There is WINE but its hard to use, configure and has a lot of incompatibilities with newer windows software.
Also it will take you a while to learn how linux works (its a lot different then windows). And there are so many distros, software packages types, repositories, dependencies etc.
SuperiorBeen 4 months ago
@superjoker6 Agree with earlier comment to this. My W7-64 Ultimate keeps crashing now ... never used to - so ... much debugging ahead.
In Ubuntu based distros: v.fast boot, restart, close. Rare crashes, quicker recovery. Easy & quick to re-insttall. Limited apps in Linux, with limited powers. But my fav. apps work on both op systems: Google-based & Opera web browsers.
grey0powerlessnesss 3 months ago
I use Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu 11.04 right now and it's all great. I'm thinking though that I might switch to Mint 12 when it comes out. I haven't used Mint since 8 in a Live CD once. What's it like installing an application? Is it the same thing? Is there something the same as the Software Center? Also, to install an application you download, is it pretty much the same as Ubuntu? I really like how Mint 11 here looks and I'm getting a bit tired of Unity here.
A135S4656 5 months ago 3

Google and learn.
leebojammin 5 months ago
@leebojammin What OS do you use?
inhuman0id 5 months ago
@inhuman0id Hi and thanks for responding. I use Windows 7 64bit at the moment. I must rely on certain games ( friends whom I coop with nearly constantly ) and apps , so numerous to mention for which wine is not an option. For those who have no such needs, linux could be an option,'but' given that Mint ignores the clear and smart warnings of a decent contributor in RIchard Stallman and goes out and thumbs its nose at him when solid alternatives exist to all mono apps, means something is fishy.
leebojammin 5 months ago
@leebojammin interesting - i'll do some investigating on this Mr Stallman in the mean time I'm enjoying win 7 64 bit as well
videos games utilizing DX11 are just ridiculous
inhuman0id 5 months ago
@inhuman0id Ridiculous as in too hard on resources or what did you mean..or great fun maybe ;) Anyway, Idont know about that yet, as I dont have a gpu that can utilize DX11,,I think my 8800GTX only goes as far as 10. ENjoy ;)
leebojammin 5 months ago
@leebojammin ridiculous as in best microsoft version to date ... only problems i have had are with larger file transfer to USB devices.
I have a GTX 470. I used to have an 8800 GTX with the Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME. Still a powerful card. : )
inhuman0id 5 months ago
@inhuman0id ,
I use windows 7 64bit, not because im in love with it, but because it just works for everything. I don't need a smart alec OS to tell me that the nvidia driver I want/'need' to use isn't open source, I know that already. Linux should be smart enough to allow you to install it right from the website, like windows is. It's a shame linux is so geeky, but there you go. However..I admire linux FOR being open source, but given what games/apps I need, can't use it much.
leebojammin 3 months ago
@leebojammin Do you mean LMDE? Linux Mint Debian Edition. Then I agree with you. My last memories of the Ubuntu-based version were bad, so now I'm on Xubuntu-32-pae. I can run 64 bit, but can't see why I should.
grey0powerlessnesss 3 months ago
@grey0powerlessnesss , I mean any linux mint version, because while I'd love to try it, I can not allow myself to use any distro that uses mono out of the box. I do not mind it IN repo's, but out of box aint no way jose, as thats putting mono in the hands of unsuspecting users who may know squat about the issue, so it perpetuates the myth that its 'safe',unlike the clarity richard stallman brings us ( and me, and others), along with groklaw.
leebojammin 3 months ago
I will probably get flamed for this, but what is the learning curve for learning this after using Windows for so long... I am thinking of trying it, but am a little nervous about it.
seventhson73 5 months ago 4
@seventhson73 No worries, Linux Mint was the first OS I ever tried, and the biggest learning curve was only the way you install applications through the Software Manager instead of downloading .exe's. Everything else was very simple, and the Mint Team have a great User Guide that really gets you well acquainted with the way everything works. It's very, very similar to Windows (esp. XP) and I personally found the learning curve very gentle. Hope that helps. :-)
InfinitelyGalactic 5 months ago 6
@seventhson73 it fantastic. i took windows vista off and put this on. its alot quicker and easier and saves alot of time when shutting down and booting up
TheDudleyheathens 5 months ago
@seventhson73 Keep away from RPM-based Linux - trouble installing apps for novices. Ubuntu derivatives are ok. But I often need to 'DOS-BOX' the Linux command line:
dpkg --configure -a
when I get my rare error messages.
grey0powerlessnesss 3 months ago
@grey0powerlessnesss ok, before I get flamed for being a noob... I have pretty much given up on linux or at least Kubuntu. For everyday use like internet and email it is great until I open facebook, then it lags my 6 gig/ dual core system. Nothing I have "installed" works even native programs. Now what is RPM-based linux???
seventhson73 3 months ago
@seventhson73 Red Hat. The main competition to Debian. These are the 2 major distros in Linux. Most other distros are based on these v. serious SERVER-ONLY distros. These 2 geek-only distros try to pretend to be desktop use, but their very conservative, SECURITy-only bias makes them afraid of innovation.
All the true desktop distros are based from these 2 very commercial parents. DISTROWATCH & Wikipedia are dominated by anti-open geeks: heavy end-users are not to tell the truth.

@Shakeitupyes Yep, you can easily add desktop environments by simply installing meta-packages for each respective desktop environment.
InfinitelyGalactic 6 months ago
going to give this a shot. I gave unity a few months and it just sucks. it's ok on netbooks but it really slows down production on the desktop. been using ubuntu since 5.10. sad day....
onesojourner 6 months ago
so i'm just starting to hear more on Mint since it seems to be a smaller crowd (kinda like Arch linux), do they have their own environment or is it in a package like KDE, Gnome, Xfce? (you went pretty quick around 3:40..) and do you have to install packages? lastly, is Mint light or is a resource hog like Kubuntu?
SlackintoshHD 7 months ago
@SlackintoshHD Okay, Mint started out small, but it's the second most popular distro on distrowatch today. 2: by default, Mint uses Gnome 2.32 which is quite resource efficient and uses about 300 mb Ram while web browsing and listening to music. You don't have to install packages...just the base iso covers most of you needs with codecs, drivers, office suite, photo editing etc, just make sure you download the 'Main DVD' iso and you'll be fine. Apps like skype, picasa etc are avail. hope it helps
InfinitelyGalactic 7 months ago
@InfinitelyGalactic yep that was helpful. thanks.
SlackintoshHD 7 months ago
@SlackintoshHD I have to be honest when i say that the Mint crowd is way bigger than Arch. MInt has been #2 on distrowatch for the last 4 years where Arch has always sat between 6 and 10, Mint comes way more complete, and is now compatible with Debian repos which are the most complete of any distro, not to mention a lot more pleasing to look at and a lot less BS to deal with..... oh and no its not a resource pig.
superdaverules1 6 months ago
@superdaverules1 I didn't say it was a resource pig... i mean it comes preloaded with Gnome which is the second lightest envo you can choose...

@pspheaven It's Ubuntu for beginners, because you do not need terminal. Noob sounds a bit negative. Mint is the best distro I have tried, though not the fastest. I which they could make it fast as LXDE.
MsPwain 7 months ago
@pspheaven You need the terminal, but not as often which is the point... and most of the stuff people want is already installed and pre-configured....

A minus for Linux is you must get used to the fundamental differences to Win.
Installing sw that's not in the repository can be a hassle.
Takes time to understand ppa for example- for any1 who's not used to command lines.

Please I would love you to answer me...
MrRafomaniac 8 months ago
@MrRafomaniac If you would like an elegant system that's similar to Windows in the way it works, check out Linux Mint (if you're used to XP) or Zorin OS (if you're used to Win7). If you'd like a system that works very well and simply, but does work differently, I'd go with Ubuntu 11.04. Hope that helps, good luck! :-)
InfinitelyGalactic 8 months ago
@InfinitelyGalactic hum... Is ubuntu 11.04 or zorin os good for playing games? (what do you think about fedora?)
MrRafomaniac 8 months ago
Excuse my stupidity, but what do you mean by a "2-3-2 distro"?
baracuda68 8 months ago
@baracuda68 That's completely understandable, sorry for not being clear. Ubuntu 11.04 (Linux Mint's 'parent') is based on the 'Unity' interface, and Fedora 15 is based on Gnome 3.0. What I meant by 2-3-2 is that Linux Mint 11 is based upon the tried and true, older Gnome version 2.32 which is what the users of Linux Mint wanted. The Linux Mint team stuck with an older interface rather than adopting a new one like most other distros were doing. Good question.
