It seems like the worst foriegn films are the complicated, new ones. Leave such cinema to America. But whenever it comes to simple stories, even ones without a word to be said, (such as this one), they are absolutely brilliant.
This is top-drawer CGI, and an ingenious way to tell the tale without having to rely on the narration, which, although it's traditional, gets in the way of Prokofiev's gorgeous music. Five stars out of four. Six out of five!
@dddrum This looks claymation to me. you can tell from the stiff animation. if it was CGI, there would be more frames and the movement would be super fluid like jello. I'm glad they used claymation since it the wiring inside the models that give them that feeling that they have have bones, unlike CGI. My guess is that this movie incorporates CGI for the use of special effects like atmospheric fog.
@dddrum This isn't CGI, this is top drawer stop motion animation at it's very best - hours and hours or hand-crafting and positioning props and models. Suzie Templeton won the best short animation Oscar for this in 2008. But you are right, it absolutely excels at telling the story and does it beautifully. My favourite piece of animation of all time :)

Not CGI and not claymation. It's stop-motion or puppet animation. No clay--puppets. And an absolute masterpiece.

i agree. i like the disney version, but i like a version without the narration b/c it leaves more room for animators interpretations.
