  • All that tremolo in his voice gives the impression he's either scared, nervous, or in grave pain. As much as I love this band, Vedder's obviously lost the baritone power he once harnessed and projected so beautifully in the early days. It's a shame, since the instrumentals have come together so damn well in the last few years...

  • fantastic song but really sad!

  • Always come back to this song...time after time

  • God damn, Eddie Vedder is the best singer there is

  • So amazing...Love PJ since day one....

  • I don't remember the age I was when I found out about PJ...It must have been around 12 or 13 but yes TEN was one of the most powerful albums to me by far and this song was one of the best on the album for shure. LONG LIVE EDDIE VEDDER!!!

  • This is one of the best all around written songs msic voice everything.....= FLAWLESS

  • I heard this song for the first time as a freshman in high school. 20 years later a lot of things have changed, but here I am still putting my earphones on in the middle of the night to listen to this song. I imagine the same will be true 20 years from now.

  • @derekmyoung Im 35 and am EXACTLY like you...............

Reminds me of freshman year at st. sdward high school lake wood, Ohio.

  • I was only seven when this song came out but its been stuck in my head for the past 19 years. and I'm OK with that

  • --THERE ARE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW WE FEEL ---UNTIL WE LISTEN TO PEARL JAM

  • When it comes to my generations rock bands there will only be a few that will withstand the test of time.... PJ will live forever ! Generation after generation . GREAT SONG !

  • Beautiful!!!!! PJ rules.

  • I still remember the moment when I first saw them live... it was november, a very cold night with an open sky... the moment when the guitar started playing the first notes of this awesome song... the best concert in my life, no doubts.

  • there is no band without Eddie , he is pearl jam i mean my god that voice , what a talent , no one come's close to him no one !!!

  • amazing.

  • What an amazing voice. Haven't heard this song in a looonnng time..

  • ..Abbruzz didn't say "but how can you hear a PJ song without Eddie... I did. Just for clarity there..

  • @RVTYU This song can only be sung by Eddie. Eddie loves the Who and must've known those words on Join Together " it's the singer not the song that makes the music move along", but he said in an interview " don't love the band/love the music." He was showing some humility and trying to take the spotlight off himself I think. However their ex drummer Dave Abruz said years after being fired that Pearl Jam's music transcends the individuals of the band but how can you hear a PJ song without Eddie

  • @1that70skid No...Bruce really cannot sing. Eddie can do more than sing.

  • I agree there's no world without Pearl Jam. Best Band Ever. No Discussion.

  • WE WANT PEARL JAM IN SERBIA!!

  • he did meet his father a few times when he was very young.... but he knew him as a family friend.

  • this song is wonderfull i made a cover (tribute) to this: watch?v=fJJg_thjSmE

  • Comment removed

  • OMG! Everytime i hear Mr. Vedders voice something happens inside of me. Saw PJ tewnty a few moments before and there was video footage of this gig and this song. Pure energy. Thnx so much @ Pearl Jam

  • Does anyone know where I could find the actual video footage of this? Its the best version of this song.

  • i used to hitchhike up the 101 listening to this song back in 05' walking from Chico on the good ol' 99 to Redding "Whiskytown Lake" then to Humboldt County, that was a good little adventure listening to this song :D

  • @1that70skid He may not be the best singer in the world but i think feeling it and meaning it is 100x more important than being the perfect singer.

  • This song never fails to give me chills

  • @1that70skid Springsteen, holy shit!

  • Epic

  • Best band ever. No discussion. For me, there is no world without Pearl Jam.

  • @tjittosz agreed .

  • @tjittosz i so fucking agree love eddie V

  • @tjittosz pearl jam is awesome, fan boys like you NO

  • @violationoftheart What do you think is the definition of a fanboy?

  • there is no eddie without the band

  • @huskerpride there's no band without the Eddie

  • A classic !!!

  • Eddie Vedder is a saviour of many. Everytime I hear this song, ever since Ten was released all of my pent up emotions flow out, releasing me from them. I always feel better after hearing this song, even if I think I felt good beforehand.

  • 6 people are released

  • Happy father's day, Dad... I miss you so much..

  • Travis Meeks and eddie vedder together would be a religious experience

  • mmmmmmmmmmm.... not even joking.. i think i just came

  • i know this one guy, who says he dosent like pearl jam... yea... turns out hes a faggot.

  • @999painkiller666 I think I met that homo.

  • @999painkiller666 Your homophobia makes me sick. Time to evolve you consciousness.

  • @999painkiller666 Your father? Hmm...

  • best band ever ... eddie we love u man!

  • Great song..

  • I love this song and always thought it was the best on the album. The vocal performance here is stunning and when you learn about the history of his parenting, the lyrics are astonishing. This is so far removed from all the clean-cut over-produced pop shite we are bombarded with every day.

  • @RobRiley78 couldn't'a said it better. Astonishing!

  • trun the light off close your eyes and turn your music up and relax to so awsome tunes

  • All the songs on the album TEN are great and stand out. But I remember hearing RELEASE for the first time and to this day, listening to this song is like getting hit in the head with a bag of bricks.

For me, best song on the album, and probably their best song recorded. When I think of PJ this is the first song that comes to mind.

  • I'll wait up in the dark, for you to speak to meeeeee

  • ... just wow... i actually just started a youtube account so I could comment on this video. Vedder's voice is beyond words.

  • ohhhhhh father....

  • I am myself, like you somehow...

  • @JasonMMurphy Breaks my heart . Its so emotional.

  • this is prob one of the most emotional songs thats out there f**k simon cowell and xfactor

  • gives me chills everytime, especially when he hits and holds that high note :)

  • Oh Dear dad...

Thank you for this song Eddie. Rest in peace to my Father.

  • chills!! xx

  • Best Fucken Band of All Time and Thank God I'm one of the luck ones who "feels" it!

  • keep that title man, you're free to interpret art anyway you like! doesn't bother me...and it shouldn't bother anyone else.

  • @dalve00 Strimmings of Trallagh?

  • 2:35 there's that '92 crazy Eddie look! I knew he was still in there somewhere.

  • pearl jam puts on one of the best shows ever. unfortunately it goes by too fast

  • i was there! amazing..

  • So fucking sexy!!!!!!!

  • This is one of the best bands in the world, arguably THE best. Theyve spanned generations and still captivate. Not many, if any, that are out there that can claim such an accolade.

  • @MrLouisepaul haha, and then I spell one wrong.

  • @MrLouisepaul Yes, clearly. You're the on who is coming off as an idiot.

  • So is this a collage of pictures you took at a Concert in Italy?

  • ...for you to... SPEAK TO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! such passion...

  • Released!

  • amazing song... they opened boston 2010 with it, and it set such a great mood for the rest of the night

  • @Jtomba06 Won tickets to see eddie and niel in dc mr young played for an hour an 1/2 mr. vedder came and played for hour an a 1/2 then mr vedder and young came out and played 4 AN HOUR AND A 1/2!!!! Opening with release me in a town hall sort of thing that held 500 people when they were boycotting Ticketmaster 1997 san fran was playing Dallas that day. ty u 4 my memories

  • @Jtomba06

  • One of the most powerful songs I have ever heard.

  • I love the lyrics in this so much

  • Handsome man, handsome voice

  • This has always hands down been my favorite PJ song. It mad me fall madly in love w. Mr. Eddie Vedder when I was 16 and almost 20 years later I'm still in love.

  • This song makes me wanna give him a cuddle

  • As a musician whose entire life's work has been analyzed by strangers, critics & music press. I wonder why they bother with me. When it's clear i will never be able to write song that comes close to this. My entire career has been built on this song and ill never do anything near

  • I think it didn't receive radio time so only hardcore fans really know it well! I had the album and didn't start liking this song til about ten years later when I listened to the words! Awesome song.

  • it's about his father he never met....after he died his mom told him that he never knew his real father and he was pretty upset....great fuckin song

  • sound's like alive i mean the word you have wrote know are almoste the same as the first couplet of alive or i am wrong?

  • @joyroythejoyboy ah shity aaghh.. not your fault but you completely changed the way I'm going to listen to this song.. forever. I loved it the way it was before, wish youtube would have a "spoiler" tag. Again, not your fault, it just used to be about raw emotion.

  • @joyroythejoyboy i'm pretty sure he did meet his real dad, he just wasn't aware of it at the time.

  • c'ero anch'io..ha piovuto a dirotto..ma forse ha reso tutto ancora più magico...concerto memorabile!

  • It's right, its about Eddie father's. Very sad.

  • I read that it was written by Eddie about his father's passing... if that's right, it would explain why they don't often play it in concert. Tough place to revisit for Eddie.

  • I was at that concert in Verona..and Eddie before start singing took a look at the sky and said hi to his father..it was raining hard...an incredible scene...something magic!!

  • To " MsAras82 (1 month ago)". That's an experience for you that money can't buy !! Savour that, and remember it, always. Remember it for me, who wasn't there and didn't see it, but would have loved to ......

  • why dont they play this song very much ? its so amazing it brings tears to your eyes

  • holy crap. this song just brought tears to my eyes.. i read the lyrics with the video.. wow

  • Wow, they played here? Amazing. I was in there a few months ago. Ancient Roman Amphitheatre.

  • This song is like a prayer to me!

  • Eddie is great in concert... he is magnificant because he"ll change the lyrics from time to time and the real-true PJ fans know when he does it!

  • Real-true PJ fans like the band, and don't maticulously revise every one of the band's facts. It's irrelevant and those people are pedantic fanboys. As long as people enjoy and appreciate the music, that's all that matters.

  • 'I see the world

    Feel the chill

    Which way to go

    Windowsill

    I see the words

On a rocking horse of time

    I see the birds

    in the rain...'

    source: pearljam com/song/release

  • i really like the outtro included on this song on the 'ten' album too, put it on repeat and fall assleep to it <3

  • @farrevalo - right on!

  • release me eddie

  • "Father...ooh...oh...oh...

I see the world, feel the chill

    Which way to go, windowsill

I see the worlds on a rocking horse of time I see the verse in the rain

    Ohh...ohh...ohh...ohh..."

Know one (not even Miss Bono) can write this kinda shit. Eddie is the Man and the band is the BAD ASS BAND!

  • If you're gonna bash some unrelated artist, at least get the lyrics right that

you use to state your 'case'.

    Pearl Jam, ...

used to rail against 'the Man' but,

is now in bed with 'him'. 8P

  • @farrevalo, he was always deep, his songs from years ago are still so new now. always a path to divinity all of his songs have this vib. n they even explain this check out the song "no ceiling". immortality etc.. de man just tight.. much love to Him N Pearl Jam for giving us such E-motive, in-Spirited Divine music. we see so much pple falling losing their souls to the music industry. but Pearl Jam n Eddie Stands Up and says I'll never suck satan's dick. im aready in LOVE. peace brods

  • @Darshuiami your comment is also on the path to divine. Thank you

  • That song is heavy!!!!! The emotion in the words and music are hard to handle.

  • @farrevalo YES EDDIE THE BEST

  • quanta cazzo di pioggia che ho preso quel giorno!! ;)

  • Love this song!

  • well done brother. dont know if its bout his dad. either way, nice job!

  • love this song.

well done on the slide show.

  • his voice is just so....... amazing. impossible to put into words. so much passion and emotion. incredible.

  • @thanman11 Like Jim Morrison was.

  • everybody's a freakin critic these days.

  • so am i ...but for eddie only words of prais coz like most critics i am biased ;-)

  • this brings me back to my childhood

  • It's definitely about his dad. Here are the words: "oh, dear dad, can you see me now? I am, myself, like you, somehow." This is my favorite song ever.

  • yep, so sad cos he never knew dad :(

  • I heard he wrote the song for Andy Wood, I didn't know it was for his father? Where did you hear thAT?

  • Great Song, I knewn´t he was singing about his father.

He sings this song with souch a feel, that the song me really touches.

I´m from holland, excuse me for my bad english eventually.

  • I forgot how much I loved this song. I never knew it was about his real father. Very touching.

  • awsome song it has so much meening to it

  • amazing song... a one wonderfull story

  • Release me damn it!

  • Aw Yeah

  • talking to his father in the afterlife. I really enjoy this song, very spiritual

  • Who In the fuck? Yes This is pearl jam ....smoke this...And listen....Never to be replaced.....I feel

  • seen them at the dodge center last summer awsome concert.

  • Just another PJ great song!!!!....Unfortunatley, I never heard them play it live when I saw them.

I see the world on a rocking horse of time.I see the birds in the rain.I wait up in the dark for you to speak to me.Ill open up ...release me, release me!!!!!

  • I see the verse in the rain.

  • what happened on 16th september?

  • In the song "Join Together" by the Who, Daltry sings (and Townsend wrote): "It's the singer not the song, that makes the music move along."

Veder's vocals on this song are a great example of this. If sung by most other vocalists, it would fall short. Veder sounds like he is baring his soul--which is why he connects with so many people on this and many other songs.

  • saw them open with this around easter 94 at the fabulous fox theatre atlanta. they came out in a huddle in the dark opened with this then rocked the fucking house down!

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!! Jesus!!! I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG!!!! it has to be one of their most powerful songs!!!

  • jajajaja te crees malo y ni siquiera sabes pelear invecil hoooo you badboy jajajajajjajajajaj

  • Awesome, thanks man!!! Truely amazing!!

  • the begining sound like the end from the doors

  • Song is about his step father who abused him.

  • wrong

  • I was wrong, it's about hsi father who died. His real father. What was I thinking?

  • its about his biological father and how the pain is from not knowing him.

  • i fuckin love it when the band opens a show with this song!!!!

  • I was there!!

    Amazing

  • woow... great job. I recognize this place from "immagine in cornice" ;)

  • This is an amazing song and a great photo essay, but please, please change your YouTube video title to simply "Release" which is the name of this song, not "Release Me."

  • why?

  • Because that is the name of the song. I'm just saying, that's all.

  • the name of the song is Release, I know

but the name of this video/collage is "release me...", two different things ;-)

  • No you just messed up.

  • hear feel and believe all that we want ....its magic and beautiful

  • I would like everyone to know that this song represents more than a persons parting from their father. This song represents ones release from an addiction or from a strong burden.I also believe that it represents the great struggle Israel had from being released from Egypt,or the breaking away from the British colonies to reform what is now the United States. When Jesus had died on the cross from our sins he asked the father to release his spirit. Thanks Jesus for dying for our sins,Also Pearl Jam.

  • what a way to expand interpretations to an already emotionally-encompassing song..from Mideast politics to the Gospels..lol

  • lol. he took one of my favorite songs and found a way to work his "witnessing" in.

  • This song represents to me the wonderful release of escaping from christianity and leaving it behind. Moving away from that was true release and freedom.

  • i am still tyrn to do that to this day man , its not easy!!!

  • i know. just keep trying it will get better

  • loved his wendy 0 williams shirt..she was the lead singer from the plasmatics who died young in an unnecessary way like many of the truly gifted artists of this stone age

  • awsome song it has so much meening to it

  • Bota was there!!!!

  • Intenso hasta el límite... :')
