I've found that the more you practice learning things by ear the easier it gets. Some people never really manage to pick it up, but I think as long as you have some small level of natural ability you can get better by practicing.

its true. i started taking lessons when i was 5. i stopped when homework started getting serious. =P. i was 12 at that time. so 7 years for me too. im now 13 and i just started playing on my piano again without lessons. that was like around dec '07. from that time up to now, i learned 4 songs on my own. (im still working on the 4th one)

sorry, i dont mean to brag or anything. im just prooving. i'll post them up sometime soon...
