The 80s was a great dressed decade--jeans that fit along with T shirts or some nice top and no fucking holes on bodies and I could actually see skin rather than Tats. I had the best time of my life and glad I was young then.
Great video! The only event in sportpaleis antwerp those days. Impressive to see fan climb up a stage and don't get caught by security....mass-terror wasn't a hype those days ;)
@louanncd Her name is CAROLINE BUCKLEY , she formed in 1991 with SALLY HERBERT , the female british duo BANDERAS .....they was JIMMY SOMMERVILLE's backing vocals in the 80's ...
@AnthonyNewsome,Yeah,I'm 50 so I remember having my share of the 70's/80s,lol,boy do I ever! Especially when I moved to Bedford in '83 & was only 50 miles away from London! Ah,happy days! We could teach the kids about music & having fun,eh?! Oh,stop me,lol,I feel an attack of the reminisces coming on,hahaha! Thanks for clarifying DDA! I did some work with BodyPositive,(Bedford),soon after diagnosis, but Bedford wasn't ready for it! Meh!
Jimmy is the ultimate, isn't he?! Just an incredible vocalist and entertainer! Can you imagine a member of the crowd being able to get up on stage at a concert nowadays, lol?! Way too much paranoia around, sadly! But,he isn't just a superb vocalist,he's a vital activist in the continuance of the destigmatisation of HIV//AIDS!
just over 19,500 hits - wow - in 2011 when the world is so driven by homophobia - the music of Communards & Bronski Beat was never more relevant - as a teen in the 1980's the Age of Consent - BB first album - was a stunning and enlivening addition to my life - we had Thatcher & the onslaught of HIV/AIDS & the ignorance around them - but you know - today's youth culture is so much more ignorant/uptight/bland/homophobic than what I experienced back then -
Absolutely SPOT ON! You said everything I was just about to! When I was diagnosed in the early '90s we were still experiencing the stigma of being 'filthy queers who deserved everything we got'.How ironic, then, that once the hetty population begun being infected it was like,"Oh,shit,we better start taking this seriously" Oops, sorry, lol, rant over.I only clicked to watch the superb Jimmy do his 'thang'! But,WELL SAID!
@popazz1 hi thanks for your comments - I was an outreach worker for the DAA in 86 and thought how great it was going to be that future youth would be open-minded but as we can see the sad fact is that youth culture today feeds off the homophobic agenda - I wish you & yours peace in your life - and of course plenty of Bronski/Communards & JimmyS to sooth out the tangled bitz
@anthonynewsome ,You're more than welcomeAs you point out,it seems that we still have a way to goAs for our youth, well,in the main I pity them. They have to be getting some of their homophobia from within the family home,as well as from peer pressure.I'm not naive enough to think we'll ever fully eradicate bigotry, but I have to believe we can have a damn good try.I no longer can physically join in the fight, but my mind remains active,so I'll fight from my armchair! Thank you for kind wishes!DAA?!
@popazz1 very true - I'm of an age where London in the 70's & Bowie on totp's in 72 - punk - Debbie Harry - & then the early to mid 80's - Boy George - Marilyn - Pete Burns et el - I doubt if todays youth could deal with all that - the DAA = Dublin AIDS Alliance -
@anthonynewsome It was hard to talk about back then. Nowadays one can express his/her views on the topic openly--that's a big change---we hear clear arguments for and against...this is better than silence...
@gabsylv I dont agree with U - and society says different with the massive problems of teen suicide from homophobic bullying - to say that being lgbt in todays society is easier - well that is not the case by any means -
@anthonynewsome Not saying it's easier, only that the issue is now on the table and can be dealt with openly. This is the only way to full equality. I live in a society in which it is taboo to bring up the G word, and while there is no violence, there is also no recognition, and societal pressure to conform is intense. That's what I mean when I say silence is the worst ie. racism before the civil rights movement. As turbulent as race relations are, there have also been advances.Times is hard!
@gabsylv hi thanks for your comments - live long and prosper - lets us continue to hope and strive for equality - it is a very sad and troubled reflection on society that billions is spent pushing the homophobic agenda by religion and right-wing politics - in a world where 2 billion people go hungry every day - millions of children die each year from having no food/medical care/war - no wonder our world is doomed -
@anthonynewsome Positive thinking is essential. I certainly count my blessings. At times when I've had not much to eat, I've experienced other happinesses I would not have known on a full stomach. Treasuring life and loving others really is the key. Stay forward-looking and optimistic, anthony...ok I'm out~
@anthonynewsome The problem nowadays is that it seems it is almost fashionable to be homosexual and we are constantly being bombarded with it due to our overly politically correct TV stations. The fact is that being homosexual is never going to be fully accepted and trying to force people to accept it will only play into the hands of hardliners.
For the record I appreciate music for what it is and these guys were good performers
@Yanksrcunts 'it is almost fashionable to be homosexual'? good lord & your 'overly politically correct tv stations bombarding you with (it)' where abouts do you live for such a thing to be happening? is your Government also forcing you to watch 'these' videos? 2012 and all that but somehow I wonder about the advancements in Technology and the regression of humankind ..............................
